Reader Review of the Day: Rimmel Eye Magnifier Eye-Opening Mascara

Have you ever strayed from your usual product because a sale on a similar item caught your attention? That's exactly what happened to Autumns_Elegy, who recently tried out Rimmel Eye Magnifier Eye Opening Mascara ($4) with just OK results. Here's the scoop:

I got this mascara instead of Maybelline Define-A-Lash, as it was a couple of bucks cheaper and I was a bit short of cash at the time. I can't say I'm overly impressed. I don't get the nice long and lifted lashes that the product promised. Half the problem is the dinky little brush. I used an old Maybelline brush to apply the mascara and it came out loads better. It's still not the same lovely effect as Define-A-Lash, but not overly disappointing. This mascara works in a pinch, but I think I'll fork out the extra couple of bucks next time for something a little better.

Rimmel's London Glam Eyes Mascara ($7) has a flexible brush for creating volume, along with pink bristles for that certain "sexy boudoir glamour." Oh, my. Reader LeahLiddell thinks it's pretty special, and here's why:

I really like this product. It's one of the better mascaras I've tried. It's just a great everyday staple. It adds some length and volume to lashes without being overdramatic. And it never clumps.

Revealed! Kate Moss's Favorite Makeup

Kate Moss has one of those faces I never tire of seeing. Whether she's posing moodily or doing the sexy-schlubby thing, she always looks intriguing.

So while I may not have Kate's features (nor, thank goodness, the drama of her personal life), I don't mind stealing some of her makeup secrets. Kate, a spokesperson for Rimmel London, wears the brand's Soft Kohl Kajal eye pencil, lip gloss in East End Snob and Lasting Finish Foundation.

Makeup artist Jo Strettell shares a few ideas for creating a Kate-inspired look:

Go light on the foundation. “For nude makeup looks for all types of skin color, the procedure is the same for fair, medium/olive and dark skins," Jo says. "It's the shades and colors that will vary." Use a sheer foundation to even out your complexion, and sparingly use concealer to cover problem areas. Use a powder puff to reduce shine if necessary, but don't overdo it - the idea is for your skin to look like, well, skin.
Get a natural lip look. "Lips should be subtly lined with a lip-matching pencil and a little flesh-toned lip gloss," Jo says.
Curl your lashes. After curling them, apply one or two coats of mascara. If you're very fair-skinned, try brown mascara; otherwise, black is the way to go.
Go for the gold. Line your top and bottom lashline with black eyeliner to make them stand out. "Add a eyeful of kohl pencil with a metallic sheen to sex it up," Jo says. She recommends the Spark it Up! Kohl eye liners, which have slight metallic undertones.

Beauty Byte: Rimmel Is Reamed for Its Kate Moss Ad

Ruh roh! First it was L'Oreal that got a lashing, now it's Rimmel. The British beauty company is in hot water because of its ads for Magnif'eyes. The Advertising Standards Authority criticized Rimmel for failing to prove evidence that Kate Moss was not wearing false eyelashes in the ad, saying that the visuals were misleading.

I'm curious to know what you think about this trend of calling beauty companies out on their advertising. On the one hand, I think, "Certainly people understand that ads are retouched and faked." But on the other hand, I look at videos like this and wonder if it would be better if advertising were honest about what products can and can't do. What do you think? Should beauty companies be forced to be truthful in advertisements?

Bellissima! Rimmel Light Beam Lip Gloss

If I'm heading out for a night on the town, I want an evening bag that won't cramp my style - the tinier the better. That means I'm constantly trying minimize the amount of stuff I'm carrying, but it's hard. I have to bring keys, a phone, and lip gloss, and if I'm putting on lip gloss, I kind of need a mirror, too.

The cute, cube-like container is equipped with a high-intensity LED light and a mirror, so you can reapply without hassle, even in a dark club. When I first came across this product, I thought it was sort of silly, but then, I considered how compact and helpful it would be, and suddenly, it seemed like one of the best ideas ever. Trend Alert: Lime Green Eyeliner

This season, brightly colored eyeliner is all the rage. It's a great time to play with flirty colors and stray from everyday blacks and browns. I particularly like the lime-green eyeliner trend, because it's a slightly wild but still mild look. It even works for daytime - perhaps with a summer barbecue ensemble?

I've played around with the shade, and I think these eyeliners look best with black mascara and a champagne shadow. If you've tried lime-green eyeliner, let me me know what worked for you.

My Makeup Routine: CocoChic

Over in the Beauty Product Junkies group on TeamSugar, the members have been posting step-by-step breakdowns of their daily makeup routines, complete with before and after photos. What brave souls!

I absolutely love this idea, so I've asked several users if I can post their routines here. I also invite you to join the group and post your own routines. Who knows? You might just end up featured on BellaSugar too!

Today's makeup routine comes from CocoChic, who shared her tips for a simple but polished daytime look. (Her nighttime look, she admits, would be much more complicated.) To see her step-by-step routine, read more

Step #1: I start off with Cetaphil Facial Cleanser and Cetaphil Facial Moisturizer. My skin is really dry, and this is only cleanser that doesn't make my skin look like it's going to fall off my face after I wash with it.

Step #2: Ok, next, I use L'Oreal True Match Concealer (the lightest warm shade) and NYC Concealer in Light under my eyes and all of the splotchy little spots, respectively. Then I use BE SPF 15 Light 2 all over. I use Benefit's Georgia all over for a peachy glow and I use Cover Girl Soft Mink blush. Ah! Getting better!

Step #3: Next, I go to my eyes. I put the second lightest color in the Revlon Not Just Nudes palette over my whole lid and the lightest color in the inner corners a bit. I curl those lashes and use Sephora Volume Mascara in Black on top only. Then I line the bottom with the dark brown end of Rimmel Eye Twist.

Step #4: Almost done! I use a different lip gloss all of the time, so I just chose one from the pile. In this I have on Milani Glossy Tubes in Bermuda Bronze.
