How to Apply Blush For Your Face Shape: Round

Round faces like Kirsten Dunst's tend to be petite, so blush can look like an all-over wash of color instead of a natural flush if you don't have the correct application techniques. My friend Joselyn swears by these steps for the perfect blush:

Use a fan brush, which is great for accurate application on smaller faces, to apply blush in a boomerang shape, with the tips right under the outer corners of your eyes and the fullest part of the arc under the inner corners of your eyes.
Continue using the fan brush to fill in the boomerang.
Use a medium-sized brush to blend your blush, making sure not to sweep the color any lower than the bottom of your cheekbones and no further out than the ends of your eyebrows.
Apply a touch of blush along your upper temples and to the center of your chin to give your face a little more definition.

Welcome to my series on bangs for your face shape. In the past, I've covered blush colors for your skin tone, moisturizers for your skin type and eye shadows to enhance your eye color. Now with celebrities like Kate Moss and Carmen Electra making bangs look sexier than ever, I thought some information about which bang styles compliment your face shape might be helpful.

The first part of the series is about round faces. Celebs such as Cameron, Carmen, Christina, Kirsten and Kate are just a few famous femmes with round faces. (That's a lot of K sounds-I wonder if the shape of your face is correlated to the sound of your name!)

If you have a round face, you'll first want to start off with a haircut that flatters your face shape and then move onto the "fringe benefits" later.

What you're aiming for is long, side-swept bangs or wispy fringes. Both help take attention away from the sides of your face, creating an arch which will help elongate your face. Stay away from super-choppy bangs or short layers that add volume to the sides.

Haircuts To Flatter Your Face Shape: Part II, Round Faces

You may covet your favorite celeb's hairstyle, but if the 'do doesn't fit your face shape, you're likely to be disappointed. Hence, FABSUGAR's four-part series on the haircuts that best flatter your face. Welcome back for our second installment: round faces. (To read last week's advice on heart-shaped faces, click here.)

If you have a full, round face, you share your facial structure with Gwyneth Paltrow, Oprah Winfrey, Kate Bosworth, Cameron Diaz, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The shape is characterized by a round chin and lack of sharp angles. Round faces tend to be wider at the cheeks, with softer shaping along the jawline and forehead. Round faces need balance, which can be achieved with hairstyles that make the face appear longer.

Soft, long layers are also pretty because they the appearance of a longer and slimmer face. The layers also reduce bulk and heaviness from the sides.

Bangs are flattering, but keep them long or side-swept. Go for wispy and tapered ends to de-emphasize the roundness of your face.

Try and stay away from blunt cuts if you have short hair. These only emphasize your round face.

Fall 2010 New York Fashion Week: Mackage

Of all the subtly sexy hairstyles, the hair-over-the-eyes look might be the most underappreciated. Such was the case at Mackage, where stylist Tippi Shorter created a ponytail that draped in front of the face. Make the swoop less dramatic for real life, and you've got a beautiful, easy style. (In your face!)

To create the look, Shorter dried hair straight then worked Avon Advance Techniques Volumizing Mousse throughout. Using a comb, she created a diagonal part that extended from the point above one eye to the crown of the head. She then blow-dried the front section of the hair forward, using a round barrel brush to create the sweep.

To form the perfect ponytail, she backcombed about two inches of hair just below the crown. Next, she draped it over the back of the head, moving the teased portions around evenly before securing it into a low, loose ponytail. After blending Advance Techniques Moisture Sleek Smoothing Serum and Shaping Gel together, she worked it through the draped section of hair; she followed by pulling it into the ponytail. At home, you can secure with bobby pins if necessary and finish with a shine spray.

Do You Have an In-Between Face Shape?

As far as I can tell, my face falls into none of the prescribed "shape" types: it's basically squoval, to borrow a word from my manicurist's lexicon. To be on the safe side, I usually just follow the tips for square faces, since I do need to balance a little heaviness, but I also know that a great "square" cut isn't going to look amazing on me because my face is a little long and soft for it. What about you? Are you a perfect round, square, oval, rectangle, diamond, etc? Or are you stuck in the middle like me?

Get Jennifer Lopez's 1970s-Inspired Grammys Hairstyle

The majority of you were loving Jennifer Lopez's look at the Grammys, and I've got the scoop on the inspiration behind her hairstyle from stylist Robert Vetica, who worked with the multitalented actress last night. Inspired by the 1970s, Vetica focused on creating volume and texture to give Jennifer's one-length hair a throwback feel, and here's how:

First, apply Moroccanoil Treatment on wet locks and blow-dry until the hair is smooth, using a round brush to build volume. After making a center part, start curling. Use a one-inch iron, making sure you curl the hair downward in a spiral fashion. (Vetica started curling in the back of Jennifer's hair, working his way to the front, lifting her hair away from her face in the process.) Next, break up the curl with your fingers and apply Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream for texture and hold. Finish off by brushing out the hair, backcombing underneath for even more fullness, and then spritzing on hair spray for shine and control.
