Trend Alert: Messy Updos at the Met

Last night at the fancy 2008 Costume Institute Gala in New York City, the women arrived wearing fabulous gowns adorned with sensational accessories. Some of their beauty looks were favorable, and some left little to be desired. One of the trends I noticed was the semi-laid-back approach to hair. Don't get me wrong, I am sure every strand was supposed to look like that, but there was a lot more looseness as a collective than I've ever noticed at a red-carpet event. Love It or Hate It? SMG's Costume Institute Gala Look

Think pastel blue eye shadow never works? Sarah Michelle Gellar begs to differ, and so do I. She's wearing it near the inner corners of her eyes, which makes them look bigger. Pink lip gloss balances things out, while her hair is the perfect shade of blonde. Wonder if she and former Buffy sis Michelle Trachtenberg will chit-chat tonight. . .

Love It Or Hate It? Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy Reunion Look

It's no secret: I'm a total Buffy fan. (I even buy the comic books. Dorky.) Last night, the cast reunited at the William S. Paley Television Festival, and Sarah Michelle Gellar was looking stunning in a coral dress with complementary shades of blush and lipstick. She also pulled off the half-up hair trend perfectly. Overall, I give this look high marks, and not just because I'm a fan. What about you?

How-To: Sarah Michelle Gellar's Hair-With-a-Twist

When you all went wild for that gorgeous hair seen on Sarah Michelle Gellar at The Air I Breathe premiere, I got in touch with Mara Roszak, the stylist who created the look for Sarah. Mara, who has been styling celebrities since she was 17, has worked with other famous women including Halle Berry and Elisha Cuthbert. She predicts that "fresh skin, and fresh natural textured hair with pops of color" will be hot for Spring.

For Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mara was going for a bohemian look, inspired by Sarah's stunning turquoise gown.

STEP 1: Spray clean, wet hair with a texturizing styling spray. Mara used Bumble and bumble Surf Spray.
STEP 2: Blow-dry hair gently and loosely, encouraging any natural curl or wave to form. No need for a pin-straight blowout for this look.
STEP 3: Part hair on the side and start twisting in the direction away from your face. Start at the top front of the head and add more hair from each side of the existing hair as you twist back, until all the hair in front of your ear is pulled back. Connect the twists in the back of the head, and then the remaining hair can be pulled up into a messy twisted bun.
STEP 4: Finish off the look with a light hold hairspray. Mara used Renee Furterer hair spray to set Sarah's hair.

Love It or Hate It? SMG's Feisty NYC Makeup

PopSugar called it when she said that SMG looked feisty on Monday night at the Vaseline Skin Is Amazing event with her tightly pulled-back hair. Sarah Michelle has been getting a lot of props lately, especially when she stepped out in pretty plaits at the The Air I Breathe premiere. (I have a how-to coming up for you, straight from her stylist, so hold tight for that.)

This time around, I'm not so sure about Sarah's makeup. This dramatic eye paired with a chalky pale pink pout might be pretty for fashion runways, but I think it distracts from her natural beauty. Do you think this smouldering look works for SMG, or is it one of her rare missteps?

Love It or Hate It? Sarah Michelle's Plaited Updo

She'd hate to hear it, but Sarah Michelle Gellar will always be Buffy to me. "Ooh, a new hairstyle for Buffy," I thought when I saw her at last night's premiere of The Air I Breathe. Haven't heard of this film, but she stars in it with Forest Whitaker-wonder if she's using his wife's line of cosmetics now.

Anyway, I'm loving Buffy's-er, Sarah's-makeup, which is bright but not too bubblegummy. And her hair is certainly a refreshing change from the traditional updos we usually see. It's kinda messy, but I think I like it. What do you think of Sarah's style here?

Welcome to the third installment of Beautiful Bangs for Your Face Shape. Celebrities such as Sarah Michelle Gellar, Beyonce, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner, Hillary Swank and Sarah Jessica Parker all have oval/long shaped faces. The best types of bang styles for them-or for you-are longer bangs that fall a little bit below the eyebrows.

Yet perhaps one special celeb whose bangs have evolved dramatically over the years is Halle Berry. Curious about what I mean? Check out some of her past hairstyles here.

If you have an oval face shape, you are lucky, since you can play around with many different bang options. For example, if your hair is thick, try a blunt-cut short bang. If your hair is thin, then a billowy fringe or long wisps will look great too!

The goal is to add some width and fullness at the sides so that your face looks more symmetrical. Avoid creating too much volume at the top, or you will only make your face look too drawn-out and oblong. (My mom calls this the "egghead.")

How To: Get Sarah Michelle Gellar's Lovely London Look

Step One: Apply a light primer on the face. Shiseido Brightening Veil ($32) contains SPF, and it helps give skin a dewy finish.

Step Two: You can see a couple of Sarah's freckles here, so don't use a heavy foundation; the idea is to illuminate your skin, not paint over it. Cover any blemishes with concealer; lately I've really enjoyed using wand concealers such as Automatic Concealer from Sue Devitt. Then, use a sheer-to-medium coverage foundation to even out skin tone. I like Vincent Longo Water Canvas ($52.50) because it's light, but Almay makes a less expensive foundation that's similarly easy to apply.

Step Three: Use a cream blush on the apples of your cheeks. MAC's Cream Colour Base in Hush ($16.50) adds warmth (and, as a bonus, has the same name of the only Buffy episode to receive an Emmy nomination).

Step Four: Using an eye shadow brush, sweep a dark mauve shadow on lids. Then, sweep a shimmery pinky-champagne shadow on lids just underneath the brow bone, gently blending it downward into the mauve shadow. Clinique's Colour Surge duo in Mochaberry ($17.50) does the trick. (If you want a more dramatic eye, try applying the shadow with a damp brush.)

Step Five: Line the upper lids with a thin application of black liquid eyeliner, such as Rimmel Get In Line ($5.99). Follow by curling upper eyelashes (click here for instructions) and swiping black mascara on them to set.

Step Six:Well-groomed brows are essential to Sarah's look. Brush your eyebrows upward and go over them with a brow powder to fill in any gaps. If you're really serious, use a clear brow mascara or a light wax to hold the shape. The Anastasia Brows in Bloom kit ($28) has the powder, wax, an angled brush for application, and a highlighter-pretty much everything you'd need to get Sarah's brows.

Step Seven:Lips are glossy but richly hued; Sarah's wearing a nude lip liner, but unless you're going to be photographed in front of hundreds of people, you could probably skip it. Instead, go for a high-shine, opaque gloss in a sparkly mauve, such as MAC Lip Varnish in Cute Yet Sexy ($14). An apropos name for SMG's look, wouldn't you say?

Sarah Michelle Gellar is a sweet-looking women with bright eyes and a fabulous nose. (Really, have you ever noticed that nose?) I think that she can pull off both hair colors without a hitch, but if I had to choose, I'd go with the darker look that she is currently rocking. What about you?
