Beauty Byte: Shakira Enters the Cosmetics World

We can now officially add Shakira to the constantly growing list of celebrities jumping into the beauty arena. WWD reports that she has accepted a deal with Barcelona-based Puig Beauty & Fashion Group to design a line of beauty, fragrance, and personal care products. Shakira said that she is excited to use her creativity in a different medium, and hopes that her line will help "personal care and beauty... be effortless and accessible for everyone."

I like Shakira a lot (how can you not love an international superstar who audits a Western Civ class at UCLA?) but I'm not sure how this endeavor will work out. I'm a little on the fence with the recent proliferation of celebrity and fashion designer-inspired beauty products. What do you think of Shakira's latest collaboration?

Madonna Is Successful Because of Her... Hair?!

The Super Bowl commercials are starting to hit the Web, and drugstore shampoo brand Sunsilk has just debuted its ad. It features Marilyn Monroe, Shakira, and Madonna, and the idea is that "Life Can't Wait." As a shampoo commercial, it's a little perplexing. Are we to believe that good hair is the impetus for their success? Don't get me wrong, a great cut and color can do wonders, but I hardly think Madonna became an international superstar because of her hair.

Love It or Hate It? Fraulein Shakira

Each time you hear about Shakira, it's harder to not wish you could hang out with her. First, she was auditing a class at UCLA, which shows she's got smarts. And this weekend, she attended the Ein Herz fuer Kinder (A Heart for Children) charity event in Berlin. Her hair and makeup go with the gown she wore to the gala, but the look seems like it would also be appropriate with jeans and a tee. What do you think of it?

Makeup Tips for Your Late 20s

Hey, it's Shakira... looking a lot more vibrant this year than she did nearly six years ago-and it's all because of her hair and makeup choices. In this month's issue of Marie Claire, writer Ning Chao explores a few ways to use makeup to look younger.

It's a well-written story with straightforward tips, but I've gotta tell ya-it makes me a sad that she's only 28 and, in her words, feels like she's going downhill. I like to think of women in their late 20s like this: They might not be spring chickens anymore, but that's okay. They're more like... early-summer chickens. Plenty of cluck left!

With that said, some women do use makeup that's too harsh or too "bubblegum," which does them no favors. I think the best approach is one that makes the most of your youthful looks while acknowledging the fact that you're not 21 anymore. Go light on the powder. A little bit is fine, but stay away from an powdery matte foundation. “Too much powder can make a person look older," says Patrick McMullan, who has shot countless celebrities and models. “It’s particularly hideous at the end of the night. Heroin chic [heavy black liner and powdery white skin] might have looked very cool on a 19- or 16-year-old model, but on a 30-year-old woman, it just looked worn out.”
Use spot concealer. Instead of covering your whole face with foundation and concealer, use it only where you need it. (Be sure to find the right shade, like I did with Prescriptives Custom Blend.)
All-over shimmer is not your friend. “Formulas with shiny particles act like airport runway lights, illuminating every line, wrinkle, and pore,” says Lauren Hutton. She recommends it for the under-25 crowd, but I think it's difficult for anybody to pull it off. No matter what your age, use it sparingly, and only to highlight. Nobody needs a sparkly forehead.

The Grammys Red Carpet Beauty: Curly (Frizzy) Hair

This year at the 49th Grammy Awards, rock stars like Shakira, Hilary Duff and Christina Aguilera made frizz look fierce! While most of us shudder at the thought of fly-aways, these gals aren't afraid to flaunt their fros.

Frizz is caused by many things; namely chemical over processing, blow drying too much or over exposure to chlorine. Also, the use of products in your hair that contain high contents of alcohol such as mousse, gel, hairspray can cause frizz. However, if your hair is naturally curly, it is also probably naturally frizzy.

If you normally use a lot of product in your hair for hold, try using a pomade which will create the same feel as mousse, gel or spray does, but won't dry out your hair because it contains oil.
Try a deep conditioner or a hair treatment that can help to restore your hair with the moisture it is lacking.
If you have coarse hair, it can be helpful to use a flat iron or a curling iron on your hair to close your hair cuticle and make it smooth and shiny.
Regardless of what is causing frizz, rinsing with cool water will help to seal moisture in your hair.

The Grammys Red Carpet: Shakira

Shakira looked red hot in her long and stylish Carolina Herrera dress accented with a pretty satin bow. I love that her hair is au natural - but I am a little bit surprised that she didn't consider using any anti-frizz products. Anyone else feel the same way?

There may be a she-wolf in her closet, but Shakira's clearly got a very good stylist in there as well. I love her usual big, gorgeous mane of curls, but tonight she had the mother of all blow-outs and tasteful, simple makeup. The strong, honey-hued brows complement her hair and cocoa eyeliner, and the nude lip and bronze blush are perfectly coordinated with the rest of her look. Are you loving these harmonized shades as much as I am, or do you think all the put-togetherness is too matchy-matchy?
