Beauty Byte: Barbie Gets Dolled Up With Stila

Back in the 80's Barbie had a line of kiddie cosmetics I remember quite well. Then, in 2007, MAC released a Barbie-themed makeup collection. And now? The fashion doll is about to dabble in the cosmetics realm again with a recently announced collaboration with Stila.

According to WWD, the limited-edition collection will launch next month at Sephora stores (including international locations and online) and Sephora's Fifth Avenue store in New York. Just in time to celebrate the fashion doll's 50th birthday, the fun and flirty collection will include four "Decades of Beauty" cans ($40): Ponytail Doll, which commemorates the first Barbie in 1959; Malibu Barbie, from 1971; Foxy Doll, in honor of the first African-American doll released in 1980; and Jewel Doll, from 2000.

Also in the works . . . those nifty talking palettes from Stila - Barbie style, of course - a Barbie fashion show featuring Stila products at New York Fashion Week next month, and a Barbie beauty program/expanded collection for Fall 2009. Way to keep it going for half a century, Miss Barbie.

Trend Alert: Wrinkle in Time

Or should I say wrinkle in a time machine? This 1980s hairstyle often pops up here and there, reminding us that crinkly, crimpy hair will probably never die.

Featured in several shows from Paris to London to New York, the style ranged from severe Christian Dior (upper left) to a more straight down, everyday style à la Christian Lacroix, Ruffian, and Karen Walker. For good measure, Jenny Packham added her own simple updo version, too (lower right). Maybe it's time I dig out the ol' pink crimper myself - in moderation, of course.

Lorick Springs for Multiple Personalities

Fashion Week officially kicks off today, but a few early-bird shows have me excited for what's to come. First up: Lorick, the seen-on-Gossip-Girl collection by model-turned-designer Abigail Lorick. For such a young line, it's certainly going to turn some heads. The presentation's set designs and clothing were amazing; models lounged among fallen chandeliers and fuzzed-out television screens, flaccid cakes, and an "After the Storm" setup with wind-whipped flora. (Considering Hurricane Gustav, however, this one had unfortunate and awkward timing.)

The hair and makeup was just as diverse, natch. Each scene featured different hairstyles, ranging from prim French Twists to tornado-stirred nests of hair. (And those accessories? So flapper-chic.) The makeup was intense, with some models wearing shimmering smoky purples and moody silvery grays and others sporting lipstick the color of frostbite.

read more. In a perverse way, I wish there were something to grouse about, so I could pull out a high-larious Shakespearian "Alas, poor Lorick!" joke for all you fellow literature nerds out there. But really, this presentation was inspiring. It's set the bar quite high for the week - and we're only starting.

Follow MAC at Fashion Week!

Of all the makeup brands working backstage at Fashion Week, MAC is by far the most prevalent. This year, its artists will be working on shows such as Rodarte, Rebecca Taylor, Zac Posen, and Karen Walker - and this year, you can practically be there.

MAC Pro team will be Twittering - basically, microblogging - about their backstage experiences. Senior artists Gordon Espinet, Terry Barber, and Vanessa Rozan will all share their behind-the-scenes take on shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. Want to get in on the action? MAC's Facebook page will have a widget with all of the updates, and of course, I'll be keeping you posted on everything I see, too!

eLUXURY and Fab Play Dress Up: Marc Me

I was so proud of Marc and his Marc Jacobs collection last night, and I was very happy to be dressed in his contemporary line today.

Some days, an LBD does the job. Actually, most days. This Marc by Marc Jacobs Ruffled Jacquard Dress lasted me all day and all night. This dress is slightly '80s, with the asymmetrical zipper, but the faint polka dot print (have to see up close) creates texture and it is so comfortable. I also adore the Marc by Marc Jacobs Metal Check Groovee bag - you may recall it was in this month's most wanted. It's Marc meets Bottega, and the gold woven leather matches all my gold jewelry.

Speaking of, I tend to mix and match metals, and I did just that with the silver zipper, gold detailed bag, and the kitschy Martin Margiela bow ring - which is so fun. Varied metals, along with a smart LBD and purple sunglasses, made for a cool, thoroughly modern, Fashion Week look. What do you think?
