Battleship Star and Real-Life Veteran Greg Gadson Shares His Inspiring Story

Lieutenant colonel Greg Gadson is not only an actor in one of this Summer's biggest action movies, he is a real American hero. In 2007, while the decorated Army commander was stationed in Iraq and returning from a memorial service for two fellow soldiers, his car was hit by a roadside bomb. He lost both his legs in the accident and his right arm and hand were severely damaged. Since then, Greg's story of recovery and triumph over challenge has become an inspiration to many, and he's shared his journey with thousands of people as both a public speaker and the director of the US Army's Wounded Warrior program. Battleship director Peter Berg was among those touched by Greg's experience, and made it his mission to track him down for the role of Lieutenant Colonel Mick Canales in the film. The first-time actor didn't shy away from the challenge and, when we sat down with him at a recent press day for the film, he told us he even requested to do his own stunts. A Cancer Survivor's Goal: 50 Triathlons by Her 50th Birthday

It's a good thing Jenn Sommermann discovered triathlons when she did. "I was turning 40 years old, and my friend and I were looking for a way to commemorate the occasion," Sommermann said. "We decided to train for a triathlon." Because Sommermann was on the East Coast and her friend was on the West, the two trained together virtually, exchanging workout notes and messages of encouragement. Several months later, they competed in the Danskin Women's Tri in Seattle.

"That was it, I was in love with triathlons," Sommermann said. Little did she know, two years later the fitness she gained through the sport would help her win a battle against ovarian cancer.

It was December 2006 when Sommermann received her diagnosis. She'd been feeling out of sorts for months, but had been reluctant to see her doctor.

The symptoms for ovarian cancer are subtle: Bloating, weight gain, fatigue and indigestion are all indicators for the disease, but they are also common symptoms for many women during their monthly cycle. The main difference with ovarian cancer, explained Sommermann, is the symptoms don't go away.

It was by chance she discovered the cancer - she was pressing on her stomach one night and came across a hard lump. "I called my husband over, and he felt it, too," she said. "I knew this wasn't good." She went to see her physician immediately, and an ultrasound revealed a tumor about the size of an eggplant. "I had Stage 3 ovarian cancer," said Sommermann. "I was in shock. The disease is 94 percent curable if you catch it by Stage 2. But after that, the numbers are not in your favor."

The Man Behind the Monarch: A Look at Charming Prince Philip Over the Years

Queen Elizabeth is marking her Diamond Jubilee, but she already celebrated her diamond wedding anniversary back in 2007. Before Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth in 1952, she married the handsome foreign prince from Greece who happened to also be her third cousin, now Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

According to Sally Bedell Smith's new biography, Elizabeth the Queen, Philip came from a tumultuous background despite his lineage. Born in 1921 on Corfu, he moved to Paris with his parents, Prince Andrew of Greece and his mother Alice, at age 1. By age 8, he went to England for boarding school. While there, his parents separated after his mother had a nervous breakdown. She later went back to Greece to start an order of nuns. His father took a different path, living as a socialite in Monte Carlo. As for Philip's four sisters, they married wealthy Germans, some of whom had Nazi ties. That meant Philip couldn't go back to visit as World War II approached.

With generous amounts of good looks and confidence, Philip was able to make his way in England with the help of royal relatives. He met his cousin Elizabeth first at a family wedding in 1934, and then again at the coronation of her father in 1937. He would later be invited to have lunch with the royal family, and that's when Elizabeth reportedly fell for him. During World War II, Philip and Elizabeth wrote letters. By 1946, he was back in London and making regular visits to Buckingham Palace. During that Summer, he spent a month at the royal family's Balmoral estate, where he proposed. At the king's request, they kept it a secret until after her 21st birthday. The wedding was held at Westminster Abbey on Nov. 20, 1947. While on their honeymoon, he wrote a letter to his new mother-in-law, explaining his "ambition to weld the two of us into a new combined existence that will not only be able to withstand the shocks directed at us but will also has a positive existence for good."

During the almost 65 years of their marriage, 60 of them with Elizabeth as the monarch, Prince Philip has been as constant as the queen herself, although he's a bit more controversial, making quite a few insensitive gaffes. But when he's not giving the press an unfortunate quote to run, he's either by the queen's side, working as a patron of 800 charities, or up until recently enjoying carriage racing. At age 90, he doesn't look like he's slowing down, despite a recent heart scare over Christmas. Let's look back at pictures of Prince Philip over the years now.

Hurdler Lashinda Demus Trains For Olympics While Mothering Twins

A native of southern California, track star Lashinda Demus won the 2011 world title in the 400-meter hurdles in American-record time. She had won silver in that event at the world championships in 2005 and 2009. Demus and her husband, Jamel Mayrant, are the parents of twin boys, born in June 2007.

Young children don't understand world championships, Olympics, American records, or any of the statistical minutiae that track and field aficionados like to geek out on. My 4-year-old twin sons, Dontay and Duaine, have a much simpler way of looking at the sport: Did Mom win or lose?

More often than not lately, I've been able to tell them, "Mommy won!" I'm coming off the most successful season of my career. Last September, I won my first-ever individual world title at the world championships in Daegu, South Korea. In the process, I broke the 16-year-old American record in my event, the 400-meter hurdles. The title was a bigger deal to me than the record; the record will be broken eventually, but I'll always be in the books as the 2011 world champion. But of course, neither the record nor the title really registered with the boys. When I got home from Korea, I just told them I had won my race.

Lashinda Demus clears every hurdle

Now I'm focused on the 2012 outdoor season, I hope, which will include success at the Olympic trials and a medal at the Olympic Games. In 2006, I was stunned, and (I'll be honest) not altogether thrilled, to learn that I was pregnant. The fact that I was carrying twins was even more of a shock, even though twins run in both my family and in my husband's family. Dontay and Duaine were born in June 2007, and though I'd had a very difficult pregnancy, I managed to get back in shape in time for the Olympic trials in June 2008. But I had a bad race at the trials, and finished fourth - just missing the top-3 finish I needed to qualify for the Beijing Games.

Kate Moss Heads Home Following a Ritzy Stop in Paris With Jamie Hince

Kate Moss flashed a smile as she left her London home today in a blazer and skinny suede pants. The supermodel is back from a quick jaunt to Paris, where she toasted her collaboration with photographer Terry Richardson and retailer Mango with fiancé Jamie Hince. Kate and The Kills front man, who have been dating off and on since 2007, are expected to tie the knot this Summer. Nothing was revealed about their plans in Kate's new interview with The Telegraph of London, though she did share her enthusiasm for the recent royal wedding and her newfound hobby of making jam. The nuptials would be the latest milestone in what's already been a big year for Kate. She currently has the rare honor of gracing two separate Vogue covers at once and was ranked as one of the world's highest-paid models by Forbes with a reported income of $14 million in 2010.

Gay Marriage Opponents Say Gay Judge Can't Rule on Case

Last year, US District Chief Judge Vaughn Walker ruled there was no evidence same-sex marriages harm heterosexual marriages, and thus California's Proposition 8 is unconstitutional. Since then, Judge Walker, a Republican appointed by George Bush Sr., has retired and revealed he is gay and has been in a long-term relationship for 10 years. (Disclaimer: I worked for Judge Walker in the Summer of 2007.)

As you might guess, supporters of Prop. 8 have filed a motion to invalidate Judge Walker's decision because "given that Chief Judge Walker was in a committed, long-term, same-sex relationship throughout this case (and for many years before the case commenced), it is clear that his 'impartiality might reasonably [have been] questioned' from the outset."

Using logic behind the idea Judge Walker has something to gain if Prop. 8 ended, shouldn't straight-married judges be disqualified too, since, as Prop. 8 supporters argue, gay marriage would imminently threaten their marriages? Implying a straight judge would have nothing at stake seems to undermine the argument for a gay marriage ban in the first place. Not to mention, if a gay judge can't rule on a gay discrimination case, can a female judge work on a sex discrimination case? What about an African-American judge presiding over a race discrimination case?

Despite his sexuality, Judge Walker has found himself on the other side of the gay rights debate. When he was a lawyer, he represented the US Olympic Committee in a suit preventing a San Francisco group from calling its competition the "Gay Olympics." That position, which was considered anti-gay, caused liberals to block his first nomination by Ronald Reagan. Based on the fact Prop. 8 proponents only called two witnesses and failed to convince Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and California's attorney generals to defend the ban, this seems less about Judge Walker's impartiality, and more like a last-ditch attempt to throw out Judge Walker's unfavorable ruling. Kate Moss has been at the center of the modeling world for 20 years, and we've seen her as the face of all sorts of brands, from the prestigious Gucci, Dior, and Louis Vuitton down to drugstore favorite, Rimmel. Recently, the supermodel, who admits she's "not traditionally a beauty" to WWD, has just launched Vintage ($23-$53), a fruity floriental inspired by her love of vintage fashions.

But as you might know, this isn't the first scent we've seen from Kate. Her debut fragrance, Kate, was introduced in 2007. Then came Velvet Hour, followed by the limited-edition Kate Summer Time; and she's not about to stop now. In fact, Kate also has plans to create special makeup collections for Rimmel, and a haircare line with stylist James Brown is in the works. "It’s fun for me," Moss told WWD. "I still model, and I enjoy doing that as well. Working on the creative process is really interesting for me because I do know what I like, so it’s fun for me to realize that it becomes part of you. Germaphobes, Avoid These Five Things

Germs definitely freak me out because I hate getting sick, especially in the Spring and Summer. If you feel the same way, then you may want to disinfect these five things, or avoid touching them altogether:

Your vacuum. Since you're sucking up germs, dirt, and other nasty things, vacuums aren't exactly clean. Actually, scientists found that 50 percent of vacuum brushes contained fecal bacteria and 13 percent had E. coli. All contained mold. Since the brush is so gross, to avoid contaminating clean surfaces, spray the brush with a disinfectant spray after you're done with it.
Your weightlifting gloves. Staph infections bind strongly to the polyester, which is often used to make gloves. It's best to ditch the gloves altogether, since not only will you avoid bacteria, but you'll also strengthen your grip.
Gym Equipment. If you belong to a gym, you might want to know that a 2006 study in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine found rhinoviruses (what cause colds) on 63 percent of the gym equipment at the fitness centers they tested. To avoid the germs, try not to touch your face, nose, or eyes while working out, and as soon as you're finished, wash your hands and face thoroughly to prevent getting sick.

What else contains tons of germs? To find out

The grocery cart and basket. Think of all the hands that grip those handles. Eww. A 2007 University of Arizona study discovered that two-thirds were contaminated with fecal bacteria. More eww. Definitely pack disinfectant wipes with you and wipe the handles down before touching.
The restaurant menu, doctor's office magazines, and other public reading material. You think these are ever cleaned? Since cold and flu viruses can survive up to 18 hours on a surface, there's a good chance those germs can get passed on to you. Don't let the menu touch your plate or silverware, and wash your hands thoroughly before your food comes. Remember that the bathroom door handle isn't the cleanest thing in the world, so when leaving the bathroom, open it while holding a clean paper towel.
