There's something about toner that seems a little old-fashioned. It's not that I haven't used one — I spent most of high school dousing myself in witch hazel — it's just that between cleansers, exfoliants, masks, and the army of high-tech new potions that claim to do anything and everything you can imagine, toner seems really simple, almost quaint. But appearances can be deceiving, and even though Sea Breeze ($5) and its ilk may be the same as they were in the '70s, there are some new toners out there with futuristic formulations that fight aging, acne, and even redness.

The busy bees in Chanel's laboratories have been very busy with their Précision skincare range. A few new cleansers and face toners are aimed at removing dirt, grease, makeup and all of the other environmental pollutants and impurities that wreak havoc on your skin during the course of the day.
Chanel has decided to incorporate phytoremediation — the process of using plants to help absorb pollutants into this new line of cleansers and toners.

Since I love Lancôme Bi-Facil eye makeup remover, I thought I'd check out the brand's Tonique Confort ($21) moisturizing toner.
The toner itself is more of a thick, creamy gel than a liquid. Lancôme gets it right by making their products smell fabulous and inviting without being even a hint overpowering.

Recently, I caught a rerun of Paula's Party on the Food Network, where silver-haired TV personality Jay Manuel, of ANTM fame, dished out hair color tips to fellow silver-haired host Paula Deen. If I'm not mistaken, I believe he said he uses a toner by the name of "Silver Lady" to get that distinctive lustrous shade. This got me to thinking about other silvered stars.

At last night's Inglourious Basterds premiere in LA, there was something different about Angelina Jolie's hair that I couldn't quite figure out. Obviously, she's lightened her locks considerably since her more goth-y days of years past, but after comparing photos from her red carpet appearance at Cannes back in May, it looks as if Angelina's warmed up those famous strands with a little touchup and softer, more-caramel/less-gold toner. While we've seen her in a light wig on the set of Salt earlier this year, and let's not forget her blond bob in Life or Something Like It, this version of a dark, honey-toned blond seems to be working for her, no?

A few years ago, I went to a French esthetician for a series of facials. "Your pores, zey are zo glogged," she scolded. "You need a tone-air."

As the saying goes, put your best face forward — but does a best face always include makeup . . .

Ten years ago, I went through somewhat of an awkward phase. I decided to dye my hair blond à la Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail, but it was more straw-like than stellar. Also, I had put on a few of the dreaded college pounds (I only thought veggie pizza sounded healthy), and to top it all off, my face was breaking out like crazy.
