How-To: Sandra Bullock's Hair at the Golden Globe Awards

Did you know that Sandra Bullock's loose side bun was created using drugstore products? It goes to show you that it doesn't take a lot of moola to look red carpet fabulous. Most of you gave the thumbs up to her look, and now I've got the scoop on how to recreate Bullock's wavy updo from Tresemmé stylist Jeanie Syfu below:
For protection and shine, blow-dry hair with Tresemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray ($4.49). To create that distinctive "s" wave, curl alternate strands of hair, using an one inch curling iron and a half inch curling iron. Will you be watching Project Runway tonight? You know I will be. Last week, Jeanie Syfu, lead stylist for the TRÉSemme team, talked about what it's like to work on the show, and this week we're back with some pretty juicy details about a few designers who shall remain nameless. Read on!

What’s the craziest thing that has happened while you have been doing hair with Project Runway?
I would say consulting with the designers. Some of them are really difficult. Some of them had a really strong point of view: “I want the hair to do this and I want a bun on the side with texture.” But others were just very uninspired, and it was the same thing every time. And that’s not fun. You want to be creative, and you want to get excited about that garment.

Can you name names?
[Laughs]. I can't! But sometimes they would say things, and you would be like, What are they talking about? They’d use these crazy references, and you’re stressed out because you don’t have that much time. Of course, I want the hair to look as good as possible, but sometimes it was so difficult to understand what they wanted. And sometimes the models would go upstairs, put their garments on, and then come back down and they would have changed the hair! That was the most difficult. A few times the models had gone out on the runway without me even being able to fix it - or it was beyond fixable.

That does not sound like fun at all.
It’s not! I want everything to look good, but sometimes they would get frustrated or have second thoughts about something or couldn’t just get their point across to me about what they wanted to see. Then the models would go out afterward, or they would come down and I wouldn’t have time to fix it or it wasn’t fixable because there was so much hairspray in it that I don’t know what they did up there, but I would just get a little frustrated you know?

Are there any hairstyles that you really that you thought worked perfectly with the designer’s vision and with what you wanted to do?
Well, my favorite designer to work with was Jerrell. He’s really flamboyant, and he has so many ideas! So every time he came downstairs, he just had this whole story that went with the garment. He had a very strong point of view, and every idea that he had, it was fun to kind of build on that. I had the most fun with his looks, definitely.

Are there any trends we should look forward to seeing during this season?
I did a lot of ponytails this season, which is kind of funny because that’s such a classic look. We did a lot of ponytails - every variation of a ponytail you can imagine - but somehow we made every single ponytail look different. The model and designer would come down, and they’d be like, “Oh, we want a ponytail.” And all of us would just roll our eyes, like, “Oh, come on, you know we can do this blindfolded!” But actually it pushed us to look outside the box and make a ponytail look different every single time - and I think we did that. Who knew there so many looks on a ponytail?

Back to Basics: Curl-Enhancing Sprays

These oldie-but-goodie products stood close by me during my crazy hair days as a teenager. I find that sometimes the most simple and inexpensive drugstore products can often be better than the expensive designer types. These scrunching sprays are great for those of who have a perm that's on its last leg and they are also great at giving straight and limp hair a little body. I know that at some point you've had to have used at least one of these! Which is your favorite?

L'Oreal Studioline Pumping Curls ($3.52) is a light, curl-boosting spray with a sweet smell and a nonsticky feeling. Also, it helps reduce frizz and you can use it on wet or dry hair. Pumping Curls was my hair product of choice in the '80s and although it's not something I see regularly on the shelves, when I see it around from time to time, I love to reconnect with my old best friend!

Aussie Scrunch Spray ($5.49) is an amazing, grape-smelling curl enhancer that you spray on damp hair to create a big, voluminous look. I used to flip my head over, spray my head in little sections, and then scrunch up my hair to help create curls. I'd scrunch and scrunch until the spray was dry! Now I just spray the roots and then blow-dry to add volume to my straight hair.

TRESemme Curl Activator Spray ($4.79) Just because the packaging on this is new, don't let it fool you. This baby is old school and it works great to protect hair from heat styling while helping to enhance your curls with just a few spritzes. It also has a firmer hold than the rest. The smell on this one doesn't entirely blow me away, but it's not bad, just more potent and not as sweet.

It's Always Good To Use Protection

A cloud of smoke is looming over your head and the sizzling strands of hair are causing quite the stench. Sandwiched between the radiating plates of your trusty flat iron are your poor, vulnerable locks.

With temperatures reaching upwards of 500 degrees (zoikes!), I'm sure you can see the merits of using some kind of protection. You already take measures to safeguard your skin from the rays of the sun, so treat your hair right, too.

Excess heat on the hair from blow drying, curling, and flat-ironing takes moisture out of your hair. Not only that, it breaks down the cuticle layer, creating a frizzy, dull, and faded mess. Blah.

How To Get Hot Runway Hair

There's no question we're admiring the clothes at New York Fashion Week, but what we're really coveting is that full, flowy hair atop the gorgeous, leggy models. Big, soft curls are everywhere right now, and the look is reminiscent of old Hollywood glam. As Jessica Simpson's stylist Ken Paves has said, "Soft curls have a casual, lived-in sensuality, and they're flattering to all hair types." Here's how to get perfect runway-ready hair at home.

Step 1: Prime Your Hair. Towel-dry your hair and prep it with a volumizing tonic on the roots before you blow it dry. I like TRESemme's Instant Heat Tamer Styling Spray, which you can buy here for $3.79. These products, which come in mousse, spray, and gel forms, are meant to lift your hair at the roots. Use a large, round brush to blow dry.

Step 2: Roll With It. You'll need 12 medium-to-large velcro rollers and 12 fasteners. Separate your hair into four sections: the crown (about two inches wide on the top of your head), the right side, the left side, and the back. Place three rollers in each of the sections, holding your hair taught, then starting from the ends and rolling hair under toward your scalp. Fasten the rollers with a small clip.

Step 3: Let It Loose. Leave your hair in the rollers for about 15 to 20 minutes-the perfect amount of time to apply your make-up. Then, carefully unwind each of the rollers one by one. Next, flip your head upside down and and gently finger-brush your hair, starting from the scalp downward, to loosen up the curls. They should look like soft waves. Lastly, flip your head up and shake it out. Brush your hair from roots to ends, and lightly spray your hair with a misty hair spray to ensure longevity.
Step 4: Curl It, Girl. As a finishing touch, enhance the curls by touching them up for a few seconds each with a curling iron. Start at the roots and gently wrap hair around the iron. Use a touch of flexible-hold hair spray at the very end.
