For someone who tells catwalk hopefuls to "smile with their eyes," Tyra Banks looks a little like a wax figure of herself at Fashion Rocks. As I'm sure you're all aware of the unfortunate hair situation going on here, let's look beyond that for a moment, and appreciate her glossy, cherry lips and well-applied false lashes. As a whole, she might have overdone things, but that's not really a surprise. Do you like the look she's going for?

Tyra Talks About Going Raw With Her Hair

While we wait with bated breath for tonight's ANTM campfest, here's another Tyra-based diversion. On last night's Larry King Live, Ms. Banks talked more about her decision to show off her natural hair on her show. (That hairy video is here.) According to Tyra, she wanted to show off her natural hair in a "raw" way:

I've worn weaves and wigs and pieces and clip-ons and clip-outs and clip-downs and around since I was 17, 18, and I wanted to show the real me. I wanted to show the raw me, and I just got out of the shower . . . and then came out of here - on this stage, and this is me. This is me. . . . Hair for black women, we spend $9 billion a year on hair products. So growing up as a young girl and seeing images in the media where they're saying that a certain type of hair is beautiful and yours isn't is very difficult for a black woman. It's a long, political thing that we can do a whole show about.

So will she do a show? That remains to be seen. And as some readers have pointed out, it's a bit incongruous to promote the "accept your natural self" message while rarely featuring natural hair in the Top Model makeovers. Do you think Tyra's choice to show off her natural hair is helpful, or does her other weave-heavy show send a mixed message?

It's no secret that Tyra Banks has worn a hair extension or two in her time. However, in recent weeks, it's been no secret that she's been looking to lose her weave. Tyra's already set Sept. 8, which she's declared "National Real Hair Day," as the moment she'll reveal her hair sans weave, but at yesterday's Daytime Emmy Awards, for which The Tyra Banks Show won in the Outstanding Talk Show Informative category, Tyra debuted a shorter style. Does this mean that she's revealed her true hairstyle earlier than expected? It turns out, she hasn't. On Saturday, she Twittered, "My Emmy hair will be shorter but fake." I guess we'll have to wait until next week to see the real deal, but in the meantime, tell us. Do you like Tyra's shorter, shoulder-length locks, or do you prefer her with a longer length?

Say what you will about Tyra Banks, but she's definitely not afraid to be seen in her less glamorous moments. In her book, she posed with no makeup, and in today's season premiere of The Tyra Show, she wore her hair naturally. Since she often wears a wig, weave, or other hairpiece, she wanted to encourage women to embrace their natural hair. Check it out:

Could natural Black hair finally be getting more love in the media? It looks that way. Hot on the heels of Chris Rock's excellent-looking documentary, Good Hair, comes an announcement from Tyra Banks's Twitter feed:

Guess What! I'm rockin' my REAL hair on my talk show September 8th. No fake hair at all! Will be the hair coming out of my scalp! 4 all 2 C!

4 all 2 C, you guys! OK, as much as I enjoy ribbing Tyra from time to time, she's winning me over with this idea. This isn't the first time Ty-ty has shown herself naturally (check out the makeup-free photos in her 1998 book), and it's great to see this down-to-earth side of her. In declaring Sept. 8 National Real Hair Day, Tyra is inviting her audience - both in the studio and at home - to wear their hair naturally. This could be a great thing for the millions of women and girls who are told, either directly or indirectly, that they need to relax, straighten, or add extensions to their natural hair. Nothing wrong with weaves, of course, but natural hair gets so little media love that this development has me stoked. Consider my TiVo programmed. Will you be watching, too?

The Met's Costume Institute Gala: Tyra Banks

Not that it's any surprise, but at tonight's Costume Institute Gala, Tyra Banks was most definitely smiling with her eyes. It's good to know that Tyra's peepers have a sense of humor about this look too. Sure her hair has a quiff vibe - a la Janelle Monáe - but it seems a little out of place on top of Tyra's head. And, as for the makeup, well, it's a tad overdone. The deep brown eyeshadow highlights her insanely arched brows while her lips are va va va voom red. When put together, we start to see more of a mannequin than a model, but maybe I'm being too harsh. After all, Miss Banks is all about the camp. Do you think her overall look is appropriate for this event?

Here's an oldie but goodie: makeup tips from Tyra Banks. As campy as she can be, you've gotta admit, she always looks put together. It's no surprise that after more than a decade in the fashion biz, she's picked up some great beauty secrets. I'm already doing some of them - patting your concealer on, for instance - but I've never tried her powder-application tips. Ding ding ding ding ding!

Ah, the crimper - what a magical little heating device. Every now and then, we see a resurgence of the style, and Tyra's not the only one to try to bring it back. She sported this style at a taping of her show, where she celebrated Vogue Italia's first all-black model issue. I'm all for bringing back modified versions of the oldies, but tell me - do you like Tyra's hair like this? Or would you prefer her to get a hair makeover along with the new ANTM models?

Now, I know it's Fashion Week, and people are bound to get more dressed up than usual. But Tyra Banks' hair at the Fashion Rocks party was more daring than most of what I've been seeing on the runways! Maybe she's just trying to get attention to promote this season of Top Model (and if you haven't seen the new girls, check them out). Or maybe Tyra's just taking fierceness to a new level.
