More than a few celebrities skipped the awards show last night and went straight to the party. Among them was the always-lovely Natalie Portman. Before she stepped out for the evening, Nexxus Creative Director Kevin Mancuso gave her this pretty updo with a sweet, face-framing curl.

We're so used to seeing photos of stars from the front, we neglect to mention what's going on in the back. We're talking updos, and on Oscars night, there were plenty to inspire. Some stars chose simple chignons, while others brought in real gems.

Stylist Robert Vetica wanted Jennifer's look for the Oscars to be "very modern and sophisticated," so he gave her this tousled updo.
To create the look, he began by applying Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream on Jennifer's wet hair, then blew it straight. Once it was completely dry, Vetica sectioned her hair into two ponytails, one on top of the other, to create volume below the crown of the head.

Whether it was Mo'Nique taking a page out of Billie Holiday's book with white roses in her hair, Nicole Richie looking perfectly mod, or Diane Kruger accenting her Andrews Sisters-esque hair with a delicate barrette, retro updos were all over the Oscars red carpet. Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Amanda Seyfried also went vintage when it came to their hair, and with this many stars following the trend, it's a sure bet that throwback hair wasn't just a fluke. Are you excited for a 2010 full of modern takes on old-fashioned hairstyles, or will you be leaving this trend in the history books?

Wondering what pretty new hairstyles have come out of Fashion Week's first few shows? Well, look no further, because at BCBG, stylist Harry Josh created these whimsically pretty buns inspired, he says, by "the models themselves, who would come into casting and quickly pull their hair back into a bun. I really wanted to create a look that a woman wearing BCBG would sport herself."

Maybe it's because they're in France, or maybe it's just the moment, but yesterday at the opening of Paris Fashion Week lots of stars were wearing chic, retro updos that recalled the prettiest parts of the late '50s and early '60s. Anne Hathaway and Paz Vega both wore sleek styles that recalled Audrey Hepburn, while Kylie Minogue went for straight Jeanne Moreau. Black shades, of course, were de rigueur.

Kate Walsh arrived at Legion's Sundance Film Festival premiere looking enviably glam-casual, with understated makeup and a sweet, messy bun that looked easy and red carpet appropriate at the same time. I think this look would be absolutely perfect for Valentine's Day or a date night—some time you want to look sophisticated but romantic.
To begin, spray wet hair with a lightweight styling spray, like David Babaii Mise En Plise Light Styling Spray ($12.95).

I have no idea what this Japanese commercial for Seiyu stores is saying, but the hair is awesome. It reminds me of Marie Antoinette's enormous sculptural hairstyles, which took the French court by storm and had to have wire underpinnings and horse hair padding. Apparently, though, this commercial is poking fun at himegyaru style, a subculture of girls who wear huge bouffants and dress like princesses.

When you're lucky enough to have a flawless complexion like Natalie Portman, you could wear a spiked mullet and still look amazing. You could even go bald. (Oh wait, Natalie's already done that.) What I like most about this look, which she wore at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, is that it's not too polished or refined, and it's slightly tousled without being sloppy.
