Picking Makeup Colors: What Works and What Doesn't

There are a lot of factors that go into choosing makeup shades whether it's determining if you have cool or warm undertones to figuring out which eye shadow hues "go" with your coloring. But celebrity makeup artist, Vincent Longo, wants to make something clear. "When it comes to eye shadows and lip color, women should be free to experiment and have fun. A woman's eye color should not determine what eye shadow hue goes on the eyes."

So, don't be afraid to mix and match warms and cools, as Longo explains:
For example:
Brown eyes (warm) can look beautiful with blue eye shadow (cool) - as seen on Keri Hilson.
Blue eyes (cool) can look great with brown eye shadow (warm).
Green eyes (cool/neutral) can look fantastic with topaz eye shadow (warm).
Hazel eyes (warm/neutral) can look stunning with purple eye shadow (cool).

And when in doubt:
Longo recommends the following universally flattering colors: for the eyes, go with a brown, beige, or black, as found in Vincent Longo Cosmetics' lip stain in Cherry ($23) or Perfect Shine gloss in Ella ($22); and for the cheeks, you can't go wrong with a warm coral.

But do be careful with blush and foundation:

Vincent Longo Cosmetics Set to Make a Big Comeback

Due in part to a failing economy back in 2008, Vincent Longo Cosmetics was eventually forced to pull its products from the shelves of retail giants such as Sephora, Neiman Marcus, Fred Segal, and Nordstrom. Space NK, however, still kept the indie brand's stock in supply. But now, Vincent Longo is set to make a big comeback.

Last year, the company began selling its products in CVS Pharmacy's Beauty 360. And with a new investor in place, Vincent Longo himself is now again able to work on what he's known for: creating innovative, stand-out formulations.

He'll completely revamp everything except for complexion products. New items will include Liquid Concealer ($28), formulated with arnica and peptides to reduce dark circles and puffiness; Pearl X Eyeshadows ($25), baked shadows with speckled colors; and Perfect Shine V Gloss ($22), glimmery pearl lip colors that add temporary volume. 2009 Fall New York Fashion Week: Vena Cava

Every season, the cool downtown girls head to Vena Cava to see what they'll want to wear to their art-gallery jobs. This time around, the collection featured motorcycle jackets, high-waisted jeans, and dyed leggings.

Working off of the clothing's dark color palette, makeup artist Vincent Longo - working with Beauty.com - created a simple but striking makeup look: a shock of orange at the lashline. "It's a contrast to the collection," he said, "to give life to the dark tones." While the skin was matte, lips had a creamy finish thanks to his Velvet Riche lipstick in Hush Delight.

And the hair? This season's Vena Cava girl, said the lead stylist Ted Gibson for Beauty.com, is hip but not too crazy. "She's the girl who danced all night and slicked some gel in her hair the next morning," he said of his inspiration. To get the rockabilly-chic look, he pushed hair back from the sides for a fun, devil-may-care style. Check it out in these pictures:

As opposed to warm, rich earth tones, these colors are cool and have more of a bohemian quality. The range features lots of peaches, caramels, burgundies, and of course metallic shadows. How-To: Eva's Happy Hearts Makeup Look

At the Happy Hearts charity benefit hosted by Petra Nemcova, Eva Mendes showed up looking absolutely gorgeous. She's the kind of gal you want to hate for being so effortlessly beautiful, but she's so sweet and goofy that you can't help but love her.

Her glowing skin was a perfect contrast to her flowy white gown, her pink lips added life to her bright smile, and her slightly smoky eyes dressed up her look for evening. And let's not forget the perfectly groomed strong brows that give definition to the frame of her face.

FACE: Apply something like this amazingly natural looking Vincent Longo Liquid Canvas Dew Finish Foundation SPF 15 in Natural over a touch of concealer to brighten any dark or red areas gives skin coverage and a dewy effect.
CHEEKS: Next, apply a peachy, coral or apricot color to your cheeks such as Nars Blush in Gilda. Glide the blush brush over the apples of your cheeks sweeping upwards toward your hairline. This matte coral powder shade gives a warm glow to golden, olive skin.
EYES: Since the eyes are the focus of this look, you can err on the side of dramatic if you wish. This Guerlain Divinora Radiant Colour Palette in Touche de Brume is a small palette that contains four different powder shadows. When they are all used together, they create a fierce smokey eye. Use the iridescent pearl under the brow bone, the discreet taupe all over the lid, the hazy grey in the crease and the glittery black as an eye liner -concentrating more on a heavier liner on your upper lashes.
