Hair and makeup artist Lauren Rennells has created a full-color guide to recreating classic styles from the '40s through early '60s. Whether you're looking for pin curls, victory rolls, finger waves, or pompadours, you'll find easy step-by-step instructions. While some of the looks are too stiff for me personally, others are delightful if you're trying to work a softer retro vibe. And though it should go without saying, this would be a fantastic gift for the Dita Von Teese wannabe in your life.

Think America Ferrera's awards show style and Drew's netted look from earlier this year. When it comes to real life, however, would you wear these highly stylized vintage-inspired looks? Are you impressed with their classy, old-Hollywood appeal, are you intimidated by their intricate nature, or should these retro looks just be retired?

How-To: Elizabeth Banks's Sweet and Sexy Makeup

Elizabeth Banks is often spotted sporting old-school hairstyles. And as the actress walked the red carpet earlier today at the Cannes Film Festival, Fab and I couldn't help but notice. While Elizabeth chose a head-to-toe beaded gown and vintage-inspired hairstyle in a longer length, it was her combination of makeup tones that caught our attention. A smokey palette of dusty purple-gray ones on the eyes, coupled with soft pink on the lips and cheeks, made for a perfect balance of sweet and sexy - ideal for any upcoming Spring or Summer soirée.

If you're thinking about replicating this look at home, I've got tips on re-creating it when you read more.

Eyes: Generously line both the upper and lower lash lines with black pencil, such as Maybelline Expert Eyes Pencil in Velvet Black ($3). Next, apply the deeper-toned gray shadow from Rimmel Colour Rush Quad Eye Shadow in Smokey Purple ($6.29) on the lids. Tap onto the liner to lock it in. Finally, create a soft winged-out look by adding either of the medium-toned smokey purple shades to the outer contours of the eyes. Smudge into the lower lash line for a cohesive look. For extra drama, try a shimmering pale pink highlighter right below the brow, like Bare Escentuals Eye Color in Cultured Pearl ($13).
Cheeks and lips: Since the cheek and lip colors match so closely in this look, why not go the route of a multitasker? Try Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks ($22) in Powder Pink for that fresh-faced glow.

How-To: America Ferrera's Emmys Hairstyle

Did you love America Ferrera's hairstyle at the Emmys? You're in luck, because hairstylist Daniel Howell of Frédéric Fekkai salon is sharing how he came up with this gorgeous 'do for the Ugly Betty star. "Normally, the dress will start to dictate the hairstyle," he says of America's vintage gown. "Even though this is a vintage dress, it has a modern feel to it. That dictated a slightly vintage hairstyle, but we made it a bit softer."

Step one: Beginning with wet hair, use a heat-protecting product such as Fekkai Coiff Défense ($25), which Daniel used on America. Rough-dry hair without pulling on it, and mist before and after with a texturizing spray to add volume; Daniel used Fekkai Coiff Bouffant ($23), a spray-on styling gel.
Step two: Starting from the nape of the neck, section off pieces of hair approximately 1.5" thick and 1" wide. Wrap each piece around a small curling iron from the middle of the section to the root. The curls should all go in the same direction.
Step three: Now take the uncurled half of your hair and wrap it around a larger curling iron. "If you use only one size of curling iron," Daniel explains, "The weight of the hair is loose at the root and tighter at the end. This is the reverse; it's tighter by the root, loose and softer at the end."
Step four: Gently brush the curls out to create a pattern and defined wave. Using a clip, set the curls with hair spray. Follow with a shine spray if you like.

Mining past decades for inspiration, Hollywood's hottest hairstylists gave their celebrity clients beautiful curls for the Golden Globe Awards. The look isn't about literally mimicking the look of the '40s and '50s, though. Instead, these stars borrow from past silver-screen beauties while letting their hair have more movement. Is this a preview of what we'll see at the Oscars next month? We'll just wait and see who'll ride that wave, but for now, check out some of the evening's best vintage-inspired hairstyles.

How-To: Anne Hathaway's Classic Beauty Hair and Makeup

Modernly Classic Beauty. If there was such an entry in the dictionary (and there should be, don't you think?), actress Anne Hathaway would be front and center. At yesterday's Los Angeles premiere of Rachel Getting Married, Hathaway's stained berry lips and shiny 1940s hairstyle were the perfect combo to complete her updated vintage style. I particularly love how she accessorizes with a barrette, unexpectedly placed low and to the side. Does this gal ever have a misstep? Nope - she's gorgeous.

Makeup

Face - For a soft and dewy look, use a tinted moisturizer such as Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer ($7.20). To reduce shine and set makeup, sweep a dusting of powder (only after all makeup has been applied) like Neutrogena Healthy Skin Loose Powder ($9.75).
Cheeks/Lips - Apply a berry colored lipstick such as Urban Decay Lipstick in Voodoo ($22), a dark pink. Blot to remove any shininess, and repeat the process (apply and blot). You should be left with a nice lip stain - very trendy. Next, do the old lipstick-as-a-blush trick, and dot the berry shade to the apples of your cheeks and blend. The effect is a natural, light flush.
Eyes - With a super soft hand, apply dark brown liner like Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner Pencil in Black/Brown ($6.20). Finish off with a sweep of matte, soft taupe shadow on the lids. Try the lightest shade in Physician's Formula Matte Collection Quad Eye Shadow in Canyon Classics ($7). Use the darker brown shade over your eyeliner to set.

Hair

Apply Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream ($20 to $27.50) to hair that is about 80 percent dry. Use a round brush to create volume at the roots, and curl under on the ends. Part hair on the side, and gather the non-heavy side into a low clasped barrette. If more wave is wanted, use heated rollers only on your ends for about 10 to 15 minutes. Use a shine enhancing hairspray to set, if needed.
