Do You Wish September Mags Had Non-Blond Cover Models?

Since the September cover of Marie Claire popped up, it's become increasingly obvious that the glossy mags weren't kidding when they released their cover choices for the first Fall month - generally the biggest and most important issue of the year. As Fashionologie points out, Vogue, Allure, Elle, W, Glamour, and Marie Claire will all have light-haired cover stars. InStyle, which will feature Jennifer Lopez, seems to be the only exception. There's nothing wrong with (or unusual about) having a blonde on the cover, but it's going to look mighty light at the newsstand. What do you think? Are the mags just going with big celebs who happen to be blond, or might editors feel a fair-haired model is the safest way to sell in a tough publishing market? Or could it be that society is having a blonde moment?

François Nars Shoots and Scores For Vogue Japan

Life is good for François Nars. As one of the most famous makeup artists in the world, he's created a luxe beauty brand (and earned enough to buy a small island in the process). Aside from heading up the Fall 2009 Marc Jacobs show, he's kept a relatively low makeup-artist profile lately, opting to pursue another of his passions, photography. His latest published work is in the new issue of Vogue Japan, in which he's captured models Iekeliene Stange, Julia Dunstall, and Daul Kim. I find it a bit disappointing that none of the models are Japanese - though this isn't the first time Vogue has been called less than culturally sensitive - but the photography itself proves that Mr. Nars's talents go beyond the (blush) brush and into other art forms as well.

Russian Vogue Gets an Eyeful of Color

The Google says the title of this December 2008 Vogue Russia editorial translates to "Fatal Beautiful," but I'm just going to say that it means "Wild, Inspiring, and Cool Photo Shoot." (Just rolls off the tongue, da?)

The ever-talented makeup artist Val Garland created these colorful looks, the likes of which might be hard to pull off in regular life but are a ton of fun to look at nonetheless. And if nothing else, these photos serve as a fun way to brighten your day.

Love It or Hate It? Keira Knightley's Vogue Hair

September is the biggest month for fashion magazines, and that's when they typically haul out the famous faces and hope for big ad sales. This time around, Vogue features Keira Knightley. I've always said it must be impossible to make Keira look anything but jaw-dropping gorgeous, but honestly, this matted hairstyle isn't my favorite. Are you wishing the styling team had gone with something a little more "done," or do you like this change of pace?

Spotted! A Cute, Easy Twist on Braids

Everyone has a few quick, two-minute hairstyles that we throw together when we're running late. But few of mine look as cute as this one. While backstage at the Karen Walker Spring 2009 show, I spotted Teen Vogue Beauty Assistant Maura Lynch sporting this cool twist on braids. "I was in a rush this morning," she said of her hair. Maybe so, but it's a cool hairstyle.

Recreating this style is so quick and easy that you could practically do it in your sleep. Gather your hair into two plaited pigtails at the nape of your neck. Tie the ends with small hair elastics; Goody's Ouchless are great because they're clear, so they won't stand out. Then, loosely weave the braids together, securing them with bobby pins. Very easy, very chic - and very Teen Vogue.

Young and Gray? You Might Just Want To Stick With it

No matter your age, I'm sure you remember the first time you spotted a gray hair on your head. For me, I was 24. A random occurrence, I thought, although my dad was pretty much completely silver-haired by his late twenties, so I couldn't be too sure. The majority of you said you have already found your first gray hair, and since my initial unearthing, I've detected several more "natural highlights," as my hairdresser likes to say. But would it be so bad to be a young gray-haired lady, after all? Vogue writer Sarah Harris doesn't think so, recalling her early discovery of gray strands as a teenager.

"I was 16 and mortified," Harris tells The Times. By her twenties, she truly started to embrace her light locks, saying, "I slowly grew fond of the way my silver flickered when it caught the light." While she realizes that she's lucky to have a soft, silken texture to her hair, Harris acknowledges it's a lot of work. "Gray hair, unless styled and conditioned, can look washed-out and neglected. Grooming is crucial," she says. Therefore, she spends more time on her strands, protecting her hair from the sunlight to reduce yellowing, all while investing in good shampoos specifically designed for silver tones.
