John Frieda's Quick Tip on Creating Instant Volume

Famous hairstylist John Frieda says that most people fall into one of two groups: those who are lacking volume and those who are looking to tame their frizz. I've got you covered on the latter, and as for the former, here's a quick tip from the legendary stylist on reviving limp locks.

If you have no time to wash and style your hair, you can pump up the look with three basic ingredients: a round brush, a blow dryer, and a volumizing product, like Luxurious Volume Lavish Lift Root Booster ($6) or Oscar Blandi Volumizing Spray ($18). First, hold the hair straight up on dry hair and spray the roots. Next, take a small section from right behind the fringe, wrap it around the round brush, and blow-dry, concentrating on lifting the roots for volume. Finish off by grabbing subsequent sections of hair back toward the crown, and there you go. It's instant volume without too much effort.

Say So Long to Limp Locks With a Colored Hair Powder

Get the Sweater-fied Hair Effect From Richard Chai Love

You know that amazing moment when you pull off a sweater and your hair looks perfectly disheveled immediately thereafter? That's just the effect hairstylist Kevin Ryan (for Aveda) wanted to capture when creating the lifted, slightly mussed coiffures at Richard Chai Love.

To create the play on texture, particularly at the crown, Ryan began by spritzing the brand's Volumizing Tonic on models' hair. After blow-drying, he applied Brilliant Humectant to slick back the sides and added Control Granules for extra texture. Then, right before they hit the runway, Ryan switched around models' hair parts to create what he calls a "jump up on the front." And then there's the uncertainty in deciding whether or not a warm or cool color is most flattering. It can all be very unnerving. When it comes down to it, however, "I think it's about preference," explains Mark celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh, who offers up her top tips for doing red right below.

The undertones: "Most people can do both warm and cool," Quynh says, adding, "I recommend trying on both tones to see which complements your skin better."
The texture: Textures also play a huge part. "Wearing a bright sheer color will be less vibrant than an opaque lipstick," Quynh advises. Of course if you're still stumped, just get them on. "Trying reds on your lips is a great way of figuring out what looks good. It takes the guessing part away."
