The New Beachy Waves

The tousled, sexy waves are always a favorite, and it's exciting to see the look revamped on the Spring runways. The new, relaxed version is a piece-y, beachy version that's completely Fall appropriate.

The trick is to make sure your waves are just rough enough to look cool (like the styles at Alberta Ferretti, above, and Burberry) and still sweater-appropriate—not too perfect or so extreme that they look like you might actually have come off a beach. "It's got a hippie vibe," said hairstylist Guido of the look backstage at Alberta Ferretti. "It's young and innocent." To create the effect, Guido avoided curling the entire head of hair. Instead, he wrapped random pieces around a 1.5-inch curling iron, working from about ear level down and holding the iron horizontally. Then, he doused the ends in Redken Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist for "an oily, wet effect." But you can use a lighter hand to add just a touch of shine—without going full hippie.

2011 MTV Movie Awards Trend Alert: Ride the Waves

Although some stars opted for a sleek and straight look on the 2011 MTV Movie Awards red carpet (Hailee Steinfeld and Emma Watson, for instance), most chose sexy curls to top off their ensembles. Leighton Meester, Kristen Stewart, and Reese Witherspoon went for more of a beachy hair kind of vibe, while Emma Stone and Nikki Reed decided on more structured waves that were pinned back to one side. How to Get Curly Hair Without Heated Tools

Achieving no-heat waves is super simple:

After you shampoo and condition your hair, use a towel to wring out as much of the excess water as you can.
Apply a frizz serum or styling cream to seal the moisture into the hair. I like to use Neutrogena Triple Moisture Serum (available at most drugstores), but any styling product you like will do.
Comb it through with a medium-wide tooth comb.
Braid your hair and secure with an elastic hair band. If you can French braid, even better!
Slap a clean towel on your pillow and go to bed. Be sure to use a clean towel. You don't want your face to be all over a dirty towel as you sleep.
When you wake up: Undo the braid and separate hair pieces with your fingers. Do not use a brush or comb.
Work a little pomade or texturizing styling product from about halfway down the length through the ends. I like Devachan Set Me Up! (I think they've changed the formula and renamed it Set Up and Above. Available at Ricky's/Ulta/Devachan.)
Spritz a little medium-hold hairspray just to keep everything in place.
If you're prone to major frizz, you can add a little bit of a smoothing product, but I think a little frizz with waves looks natural. Unless you're going to a photo shoot, who cares about a touch of frizz?

A Two-Step Trick For Enhancing Curls of All Kinds

One of the interns here at Sugar has the cutest, most enviable curly/wavy pixie, while I, on the other hand, have the subtlest of waves in my pixie-esque cut. But with just the right product and styling technique, I have been able to coerce my normally wave-resistant strands to form soft curls thanks to tips from my stylist.

It's easy to do on any length hair, as long as you have slightly wavy strands, but also works wonderfully for those with super curly strands, too. Start off by applying a firm hold curl-enhancing gel to hair that's still slightly wet. I like Wella Hypercurl ($22), as it gives just the right amount of texture, but without the crunchy results. Then, break out the diffuser - a necessary styling tool that will soften your hairstyle, all while preventing frizz.

For a bit more customization, you can wrap individual strands around your finger to help give the curl more definition. But if you have barely-there waves like me, try scrunching and squishing hair into the diffuser.
