No matter how many times I see a caviar night cream or a diamond-encrusted lip gloss, I still experience sticker shock. Of course, there are an abundance of beauty items that don't cost and arm and a leg, and for that I am grateful. I firmly believe that many pricey products are worth their, uh, price — but did you ever stop to think what else you could be getting for the same dollar amount? Well, that's just what I did when I set out to see whether one bottle of really nice polish costs more than the entire collection from another brand and other like comparisons. It was fun for me to hunt out these makeup items, but the results are definitely not made up.

I'm often amazed at the high cost of certain beauty products. A $200 haircut? The frugal gal in me can't help but start formulation scenarios as to what else I could do with that kind of dough.

Despite the obvious jokes about state fairs and unicorn T-shirts, people have been using airbrush machines to apply red-carpet makeup for years, and they're a given on film and television sets. But most women outside Hollywood don't know much about them, and they've traditionally been prohibitively expensive. Why is it that every time I turn around lately, it seems there's a new perfume with a cannabis note being launched? I realize that to some extent it's just good marketing; people will buy anything that sounds illicit. But on the other hand, how many women sit around wishing they could smell like something typically associated with directionless twentysomethings who look like Seth Rogen?
