Go Beyond Brown and Black With a Colorful Eyeliner

It seems to me that the majority of makeup wearers opt for the fairly standard hues of brown or black. Pretty, but a bit boring, nonetheless. For New Year's Eve I went bold with a bright blue liner, and this got me to thinking about the rainbow of colors available beyond traditional shades.

While reds, oranges, and yellows are often saved for the runway or high fashion/high drama looks, here are some tips on how to wear shades on the cooler end of the spectrum:

Bold blue: We know that blue-based red lipsticks can help neutralize the yellow cast in teeth, and did you know that blue eyeliner can help make your eyes pop? Who wouldn't want a little twinkle, eh? Recently, I chose a deeper hue for a sophisticated look with a richer contrast, applying Wet 'n' Wild Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in Deep Blue ($1.49) to the waterline of both my upper and lower lash lines. After smudging and setting with a navy shadow, I was off for evening cocktails. My friend said I looked well-rested. Wink wink.

White: Apply white liner to the inner v and lower waterline to open eyes and brighten. Try Shu Uemura Eye Light Pencil White ($18), which has a white matte shade on one side and a pearl shade on the other.
Go green: To make hazel or green eyes pop, try an emerald green shade like Tarte EmphasEyes High Definition Eye Pencil in Green ($18).
Purple power: If you have deep brown, green, or hazel eyes, a purplish shade of liner will make them stand out even more. Apply L'Oreal Le Kohl Eyeliner in Le Plum ($7.95) and watch your eyes light up.

Love it or Hate It? White Winged Eyeliner at BCBG

On Wednesday afternoon, the highly anticipated BCBG Spring 2008 show took center stage in the Bryant Park tents. FabSugar seemed to be smitten by the clothing, but I'm not entirely sold on the makeup choice to match. Here are a couple of pictures of the pretty Jessica Stam from before and during the show. Fall Beauty Trend: White Pencil Eyeliner

I guess since Black Nail Polish is all the rage, it only makes sense that white eyeliner would be in style as well. (well maybe not, but bear with me here). Anyway, that's right, white pencil eyeliner was all over the runways at all the Fall fashion shows from Oscar de la Renta to Dolce & Gabanna.

Of course, with any dramatic makeup trend, there are do's and don'ts to wearing it correctly. According to makeup artist Mally Roncal:

[White eyelinter] can be applied in a thin matte line about 1/3" along upper lash lines, around eyes' inner corners, inside the inner lower rim and just along the lower lash lines. Don't go any lower or it starts looking alien-like

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Pale Eyeliner

You know how makeup artists are always saying things like, "A bit of white eyeliner along the rims of your eyelids will perk up tired eyes"? Well, I could never get this trick to work; the white always looked too obvious, so I wound up using my pencils to whiten my nails.

But now I've figured it all out. As it turns out, yes, white eyeliner looks too artificial, but if the eyeliner has just a hint of beigey pink, the trick works wonders. Today, I used Being True dual eyeliner ($18) in Express/Reflect. One side of the pencil is a warm brown shade; the other is a pearly champagne color. I used the brown shade on my upper lash line to define the eye, then used the lighter shade along my lower waterline (the lower lid right above the lower lashes). Magic! The brown gives the illusion of thicker lashes, while the lighter color brings out the whites of my eyes in a natural-looking way. Doing Drugstore: Jordana Eyeliner in 28 White

I don't know when it happened, but sometime within the last few years, Revlon discontinued its Nail Whitening Pencil. It was a great, simple product: You simply dampened your fingertips and "drew" on the undersides of your nails. The result was a quickie version of a French manicure. I used the pencil to make my nails look brighter when I didn't have time to give them a coat of polish. And then Revlon got rid of it!

While strolling the aisles of Walgreens yesterday, I went on a hunt for a replacement product. While I didn't find any nail pencils, I did find a white pencil eyeliner from Jordana. Maybe it would work, I thought. Heck, at just 79 cents, what did I have to lose?

Even though I'm not using this as a real eyeliner, I have to say, the soft texture isn't bad at all. I hate it when pencil eyeliners are pokey and too hard, so I'll probably try Jordana again when I want to try an unusual color. But back to the nails. Oof. There's nothing to make you feel like you need a manicure like seeing a picture of your cuticles up close. (Hey, cut me a break-I did this myself with my non-dominant hand!) Anyway, at left you can see my index finger before I used the eyeliner pencil, and at right you can see it post-pencil. It's not as fancy as an actual French manicure, but for 79 cents, I'm not complaining.
