A Fresh New Way to Wear White Eyeliner

Here's an excerpt of a post by OnSugar blog cee me on getting a runway-inspired white eyeliner look:

I'm not wearing any other makeup on my face, so all the focus should go to the eyes. I started with a white eyeliner (by Bourjois) and set that with a white eye shadow (from the Eye Shadow Duo Twilight by Smashbox), and then used a cream black eyeliner (by Clinique) with a very, very thin brush (by Sephora) to line really only the base of the lashes. I then used a black waterproof eyeliner (by Urban Decay) on my top waterline (try not to blink until it's dry), and then I used a black mascara (by YSL) on my top lashes only.

Go Beyond Brown and Black With a Colorful Eyeliner

It seems to me that the majority of makeup wearers opt for the fairly standard hues of brown or black. Pretty, but a bit boring, nonetheless. For New Year's Eve I went bold with a bright blue liner, and this got me to thinking about the rainbow of colors available beyond traditional shades.

While reds, oranges, and yellows are often saved for the runway or high fashion/high drama looks, here are some tips on how to wear shades on the cooler end of the spectrum:

Bold blue: We know that blue-based red lipsticks can help neutralize the yellow cast in teeth, and did you know that blue eyeliner can help make your eyes pop? Who wouldn't want a little twinkle, eh? Recently, I chose a deeper hue for a sophisticated look with a richer contrast, applying Wet 'n' Wild Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in Deep Blue ($1.49) to the waterline of both my upper and lower lash lines. After smudging and setting with a navy shadow, I was off for evening cocktails. My friend said I looked well-rested. Wink wink.

Love it or Hate It? White Winged Eyeliner at BCBG

On Wednesday afternoon, the highly anticipated BCBG Spring 2008 show took center stage in the Bryant Park tents. FabSugar seemed to be smitten by the clothing, but I'm not entirely sold on the makeup choice to match. Here are a couple of pictures of the pretty Jessica Stam from before and during the show. The Beauty of White Eyeliner

If you looked beyond her mile-long eyelashes at the Emmys, you might have noticed that Tyra Banks had a little bit of silvery-white sparkle going on in the corners of her lids. I'm glad to see that white eyeliner is still in vogue, since the color really does make your eyes look brighter and more awake. The white-hot look was huge during spring Fashion Week in New York, showing up on runways for Fendi, Givency, and Louis Vuitton:

read more When used on the upper lid, the white attracts light and opens up the shape of your eye, whereas a black liner can make your eyes look smaller. You can also put white liner on the inside of your lower lid, inside the lashes. As with any makeup, be sure to choose the right shade: Stark whites can look a little bit scary, so opt for an off-white liner or try smudging more severe shades with a sponge or Q-tip for a softer look. To apply, line the inner corner of the eye or your lower lashline with an eye pencil in shimmery white, cream, or silver and blend in the line. Fall Beauty Trend: White Pencil Eyeliner

I guess since Black Nail Polish is all the rage, it only makes sense that white eyeliner would be in style as well. (well maybe not, but bear with me here). Anyway, that's right, white pencil eyeliner was all over the runways at all the Fall fashion shows from Oscar de la Renta to Dolce & Gabanna.

Of course, with any dramatic makeup trend, there are do's and don'ts to wearing it correctly. According to makeup artist Mally Roncal:

[White eyelinter] can be applied in a thin matte line about 1/3" along upper lash lines, around eyes' inner corners, inside the inner lower rim and just along the lower lash lines. Don't go any lower or it starts looking alien-like

We know Marilyn Monroe's the epitome of sexy glamour, reducing men to jello, and so on and so forth, but it's nailing the look we're most inquisitive about. Thank goodness a gloProfessional makeup artist, Kate McCarthy, was thoughtful enough to whip up this quick face chart outlining what to do to copy Miz Monroe's classic bombshell makeup.

For the eyes, she suggests using a shimmery white like Diamond in the inner corner and contouring with a warm, sandy brown like Twig. Finish it up with a swipe of cream eyeliner on the upper lid only. Try blush in an apricot hue, like Sandalwood, and finish with a generous swipe of lipstick in classic red. And just like that, you're ready to sidle on up to the hottest dude at the bar and purr something along the lines of, "Happy birthday, Mr. President." If he looks confused, don't worry-he's just wondering who is this sex goddess that strolled up.

No, we're not talking about the '90s band. We're talking about the one and only spoiled rich girl of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fame.

Hair and makeup: Have strawberry blond hair (or a strawberry blond wig)? That's step one. Step two is to dot in a few freckles with a brown-red eyeliner or lip liner in colors such as sienna or rust. Step three? Add some kind of warm, peachy cheek and lip color for a youthful glow.

What to wear: If you have the dough (or your rich father does, obviously), head to Etsy, where seller srdodd will sew up a custom dress ($200) for you. Otherwise, eBay or your local thrift store should have some type of mod-era red frock. Top off with a white laced dickey, white tights, a black belt, and black Mary Janes.

Take it to the next level: Walk around with a sourpuss pout and a spoiled brat attitude. Just stay away from any and all rubbish shoots.
