Nicki Minaj and Rihanna's video for their duet "Fly" just premiered, and we might as well crown Ms. Minaj the queen of wildly creative wigs. The pieces, which have a Zoobilee Zoo-like quality, seem to be inspired by the animal kingdom: her long blond wig is spotted with leopard print, the mohawk is like a zebra mane, and the pink bob is shaped like a flamingo (that asymmetrical high-top fade, however, remains a mystery). Debbie Harry's iconic rocker style has inspired at least a couple generations of girls to break out of their shells and experiment, and she's never stopped pushing beauty boundaries. Last night at the GQ Gentlemen's Ball, she arrived in a white layered wig and extravagantly long false eyelashes. It was a lot more whimsical than what other women were wearing on the red carpet, and it was definitely a festively Halloween-y look. Another Halloween, another costume accessory to make us groan. This time, it's the "ghetto fab" wig - their name, not ours - stocked at stores like Kohl's. Wearing a curly Afro wig on Halloween, as Afrobella points out, can be an iffy endeavor in itself. But labeling this natural hairstyle "ghetto fab" is offensive to many people, and I'm hoping this is the last Halloween to display this kind of insensitivity. (Unlikely, but a girl can dream.)
