Alexander Wang Takes a (Cat)walk of Shame

Backstage at Alexander Wang, the designer told me his inspiration for the hair and makeup was "sweat." Well, he couldn't have picked a more humid and rainy day to show.

Just as hot-and-bothered was the beauty look. Makeup artist Dick Page described it as "the walk of shame - when you have to go into the subway station, everyone is going to work, and you're going home."

To that end, models' hair and faces were sprayed with Avene Thermal Spring Water Spray before they hit the runway. "The girls look very hot, like they've been exerting themselves," explained head hairstylist Eugene Souleiman, who used Aveda products. "It's about action, sporty, really cool-looking girls that are tough. Really cool girls don't do too much with their hair because they don't need to. Fast life, no time to do her hair!" The result? Models who looked like they got caught in the same 90-degree downpour the audience did, only infinitely more glamorous. Real cool girls indeed.

Hairstylist Souleiman created a deconstructed half-ponytail. He said:
"We're wetting the front of the hair and just grabbing the hair and pulling it back; we're not even combing it. Then we're using Air Control hair spray and just twisting it. It kind of dries the hair out and makes it dull, and makes the back look quite full and very raw."

Dick Page, who used Shiseido products, outlined the makeup look. Eyelids had a glossy, coppery cream shadow over dark gray shadow (with black eyeliner, of course). "Go all the way, really kind of murky, about the eyes," he advises. "It makes the eye look very wet." On the lips, beige lipstick and a bit of berry gloss on the middle of the lower lip gives a fresh, just-been-snogged look that's very sexy - whether you're doing a walk of shame or not.

Backstage Beauty: Alexander Wang

I thought you all might enjoy seeing some photos from backstage at Alexander Wang. I know he's not a household name, but give the guy a break-he's only 23! His show had a lot of beautiful cashmere pieces, and like so many other shows this week, the makeup and hair were low-key.

Well, make that low-key for the runway. As you can see, it still took a large team (and a wealth of hair extensions) to make these models ready for the show. For the rest of us, this hairstyle is actually really easy to do at home. The stylists used Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray to add texture to hair, along with Hair Powder to give volume at the roots. Ah, Watts. Is there any John Hughes character so cool, yet so overlooked? Details from Mary Stuart Masterson's turn as a tomboy drummer in Some Kind of Wonderful are showing up on fashion icons such as Kate Lanphear and Alexander Wang. 2009 Fall New York Fashion Week: Barbie

The worlds of fashion and beauty are traditionally youth-obsessed, but today's most crowded show featured a 50-year-old muse. The tents were swarming with people (including quite a few little girls) who wanted to peek at the doll's runway show. Fashion's heavy hitters, including Calvin Klein and Alexander Wang, created outfits inspired by the doll. And the hair and makeup, as you'll see, is equally dolled-up. (Full disclosure: While Barbie is a sponsor of BellaSugar during Fashion Week, I'm being honest in saying that this show seemed to be on everyone's lips - it's been the most fun one by far.) Bella Donna: Grace Jones

At Rag & Bone's Fall 2008 show, crisp white button-downs were punctuated with skinny black ties, and Alexander Wang showed layers, knit hats and vests. The androgyny trend practically begins and ends with Grace Jones, the model-turned-musician whose signature flat top, glasses, amazing skin and wild getups (Keith Haring once painted her body and fitted her with armor) solidified her as one of the most iconic faces of the time.

Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, Jones moved to Syracuse, New York and studied acting at Syracuse University. She soon ended up in New York City, where her 5'10" frame caught the attention of the fashion world. Jones began recording disco albums in the '70s and palling around with Andy Warhol. An early triple threat, Jones also acted in a number of movies, including Boomerang, in which she played a French model named Helen Strangé.

Whatever she has done, Jones has put forth an unconventional but undeniable ideal of beauty. Her makeup, usually bright colors in daring concentrations, has been inspirational, as has her extensive and continuing work with AIDS charities.

New York Fashion Week brought a gaggle of front row sightings, a couple emerging trends, and a whole lot of sleep-deprived nights. I have a couple more trends and tricks to share with you, but while I catch up on the ZZZs, you can catch up on this week's most stylish posts.
