I've been on a real '40s kick lately, gallivanting about in seamed stockings and rich red lipstick. Before that, I flirted with looking like Jane Birkin, whose beautiful bangs and eyeliner make me feel like a foxy Frenchie in the '60s. To me, it's fun to take looks from decades past and reinterpret them into something modern.

Oh boy. Where to begin with last night's episode? I appreciate Tyra's attempt to educate the girls on Hawaiian history, and huzzah for highlighting different cultural blends, but what a misguided idea for a photo shoot!

Humans used cosmetics as a mode of self-expression long before we even had the skill to write about them, and they're an enduring universality among otherwise diverse cultures. But although the root ideas behind cosmetic use (darkening eyes, making nails and lips bright) have been around since time immemorial, the incarnations of the products we use to get the job done are a lot more recent. Take my quiz to find out how much you know about the history of your favorite products and learn a little about the inspiring women and men who invented our concept of beauty — and even the very word "makeup."
