How-To: A Honey of a Hive

For those of you saucy Bella Donnas who strive for a hip beehive that stars such as Amy Winehouse are making chic again, here's an easy way to recreate this punkier and slightly messier version of the popular '50s hairstyle at home.

There's no doubt that you can use a wig, like makeup artist and hairstylist Yvette Beebe did here for Halloween. But if you want to rock a hive with your own hair in under five, you'll need:

a styling spray
a comb
a set of bobby pins
firm hold hairspray

STEP 1: If possible, don't wash your hair the day you plan to create this style. It's helpful if hair has a little bit of natural grease in it. The first step is to divide your hair into two sections: top and bottom.
STEP 2: Next, spritz the crown of your hair with a styling spray and then tease it underneath to create airy volume.
STEP 3: When your hair is nice and stiff from all of the back-combing, turn the bottom part of the hair that you just back-combed and get ready to pin it in place. But here's the crucial part - before you secure it, push the hair forward so that you create some height. When you've got that beehivey look, begin securing it in pieces with as many bobby pins as necessary so that it holds.
STEP 4: Lastly, gently comb any fly-away hairs back and mist the heck out of your entire head with a firm hold hairspray. It won't move much, but that's the point, isn't it?

A year ago, the only people talking about Amy Winehouse were music aficionados. Fast-forward to the present day, and she's become a sort of style icon. While her look isn't for everybody, I like the fact that she has her own individualistic look. Borrowing from girl groups such as The Supremes, she's transformed the beehive into a modern thing.

Brooklyn's Beehive Salon keeps a notebook filled with Polaroids of single customers (after their hair is primped to perfection, of course) along with their responses to a brief questionnaire. Though the success rate is unknown, the receptionist tells me she's seen lots of desirable specimens flipping through. Hey, it's OK to look, right? (Or is it?)

Bella Donna: Ronnie Spector

Girl groups from the Spice Girls to Le Tigre might not exist were if not for Ronnie Spector, the lead singer of 1960s girl band The Ronettes and first wife of murder suspect (and alleged nutball) Phil Spector. During a time when multiracial, all-female bands (Ronnie and her sister-cum-bandmate Estelle's mother was black and Native American, their father Irish) were uncommon, The Ronettes topped charts. Their most famous song, "Be My Baby" (yes, from Dirty Dancing) has been covered or sampled by bands from The Beatles to Concrete Blonde to Amy Winehouse. Ronnie (born Veronica Yvette Bennett) released a memoir in 2004 titled Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts, and Madness.

The Ronettes began performing together as The Darling Sisters in 1959, and when the oldest member was 18, the group won a talent show at The Apollo. While in line for The Peppermint Lounge (a Manhattan disco owned by the Genovese crime family) a couple of years later, the trio were mistaken for a no-show band and ended up on stage. Before long, they hooked up with producer Phil Spector, who is credited with getting them to adopt a more rocker style by wearing beehives and heavy eyeliner.

Halloween How-To: Amy Winehouse

I'm hearing a lot of buzz about people going as Amy Winehouse this Halloween, which is a great idea-her look is unmistakable, and it's over-the-top fun. So when makeup artist Yvette Beebe offered to show me how to recreate her hair and makeup, I jumped at the chance to share the steps with you. Yvette has her own cosmetics line, and she really knows how to get a rocker-girl look down pat-not surprising, since she went on tour with Pink to give her that cool-girl look. Face: Yvette started by evening out our model's skin with yb naked foundation stick. To create a gaunt-looking face, she contoured cheeks with yb pale bronzer.

Eye basics: Yvette started by lining the inner eyelids with black eyeliner. She then brushed the eyelids from lashes to brow with a barely-there, shimmery shade of pink. (She used yb shady in Pearly Jam.) She darkened the eyebrows by dipping a brush in yb shady powder in Elton Brown, then exaggerating the brows' width and thickness. Follow with a coat or two of black mascara.

Eyeliner : This is the hallmark of Amy's look. Yvette used yb crooked eyeliner in Raven. Here's the trick. The "point" of the liner should start at the outer edges of eyebrows. Starting there, draw down to the lashline, using your iris as the end point. Fill in the exaggerated cat-eye shape by moving down toward your eyelids (as opposed to starting near the lid and drawing upward.)

Lips : Amy's lips are almost always pale, so Yvette used a nearly nude gloss called yb lippy in Shy.

Hair: Yvette used two wigs to recreate Amy's signature hairdo. The first was a simple black wig. For the beehive, she covered a Marie Antoinette wig with black spray paint, then secured it to the other wig with bobby pins. (For another option, check out this video.)

The rest: Fake and temporary all the way! We went with a rocker-girl outfit for Amy, but jeans and a white tank top will work, too. After all, Amy's signature look is all about the hair and makeup.

Curse of the Golden Flower star Gong Li showed up at the Cannes Film Festival with a very bold updo. Though it looks like it would be heavy, I really like this look - sort of an Eastern-influenced beehive. What do you think?

Christian Dior Cruise Collection 2008: Backstage Beauty

Last night in New York City, Christian Dior put on a fashion show to unveil John Galliano's 2008 ready-to-wear cruise collection. The look of the show was very 1960s mod, reminiscent of the looks we saw on the runways for fall and of Sienna Miller in Factory Girl.

The clothing was full of color, and the hair was bouffant and dramatic. Stylist Orlando Pita either created beehives or teased hair at the crown and placed a thick headband high on the forehead. Renowned makeup artist Pat McGrath also created magnificent mod looks on all of the models.

Face: Yes, these models have great skin, but that's also part of this look. For a flawless face, begin by using Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen to conceal dark circles and blemishes, then apply DiorSkin AirFlash Spray Foundation to create a beautiful semi-matte canvas.
Cheeks: All of these girls have a teensy bit of tan enhanced with a slight pink flush on their cheeks. Perhaps they were using Dior Bronze Sunshine Blush in Sunrise Party 001. Take a blush brush, swirl it across all four colors, and sweep the blush starting at the apples of your cheeks and working your way out toward your hairline.
Eyes:Since this looks is all about mod, the eyes and lips and the central points of focus. This new and very cool Dior Logo Palette is all that you are going to need! Start by applying the white shadow all over your lid. Next, choose either the pink or the purple and apply it on your lid stopping before the crease. Take the rust color and apply just a little bit for definition in the crease.
Next, heavily line your eyes by wetting the black shadow and drawing a line that will run from the inner corner of your eyelash line and extend out to create wings. This is going to be a heavy line, so be prepared to go over it a few times until you reach your desired length. Also, remember that the line gets increasingly thicker as you work your way outward. Then, line your lower lids and concentrate the thickness toward the outer corners as well.

Once you are finished with the black, take the white shadow and run it along the rims of your lower lashes to really make your eyes pop! Finish with two coats of the new Diorshow Black Out Mascara and an extra-long set of false lashes.
Lips: Line your lips with a pale pink liner, such as Dior Lipliner Pencil in Heather Rose, then fill in your lips completely. Next, apply a light layer of sheer nude/pink lipstick, such as Dior Addict Ultra Shine Sheer Lipcolor in Shiniest Beige, all over the lips. Lastly, take a tissue and blot lips once for a more matte finish. Do not use lip gloss for this look.
