Japan Is a Hair-Raising Place

I have no idea what this Japanese commercial for Seiyu stores is saying, but the hair is awesome. It reminds me of Marie Antoinette's enormous sculptural hairstyles, which took the French court by storm and had to have wire underpinnings and horse hair padding. Apparently, though, this commercial is poking fun at himegyaru style, a subculture of girls who wear huge bouffants and dress like princesses. Either way, that Japonica seed updo is calling my name. Growing up with a beekeeper father has left me with an oddly profound love for the buzzing creatures. I'm not about to harvest a beehive myself, but I wouldn't mind a bit of bee-themed décor. I think this elegant Wisteria Mercury Glass Beehive Cloche ($27, reduced from $54) is the perfect compromise, especially since it also supports my love for mercury glass. It would look très chic standing on its own anywhere in my home, but it's also a great place to hide keys or other odds and ends that build up day to day. I'd like to use it to save leftovers, but unfortunately it's not food-safe.

How-To: A Honey of a Hive

For those of you saucy Bella Donnas who strive for a hip beehive that stars such as Amy Winehouse are making chic again, here's an easy way to recreate this punkier and slightly messier version of the popular '50s hairstyle at home.

There's no doubt that you can use a wig, like makeup artist and hairstylist Yvette Beebe did here for Halloween. But if you want to rock a hive with your own hair in under five, you'll need:

a styling spray
a comb
a set of bobby pins
firm hold hairspray

To read my four-step guide on how to build a beehive at home,

STEP 1: If possible, don't wash your hair the day you plan to create this style. It's helpful if hair has a little bit of natural grease in it. The first step is to divide your hair into two sections: top and bottom.
STEP 2: Next, spritz the crown of your hair with a styling spray and then tease it underneath to create airy volume.
STEP 3: When your hair is nice and stiff from all of the back-combing, turn the bottom part of the hair that you just back-combed and get ready to pin it in place. But here's the crucial part - before you secure it, push the hair forward so that you create some height. When you've got that beehivey look, begin securing it in pieces with as many bobby pins as necessary so that it holds.
STEP 4: Lastly, gently comb any fly-away hairs back and mist the heck out of your entire head with a firm hold hairspray. It won't move much, but that's the point, isn't it?

A year ago, the only people talking about Amy Winehouse were music aficionados. Fast-forward to the present day, and she's become a sort of style icon. While her look isn't for everybody, I like the fact that she has her own individualistic look. Borrowing from girl groups such as The Supremes, she's transformed the beehive into a modern thing.

Jean Paul Gaultier Turned All His Models Into Amy Winehouse

Models at the latest Jean Paul Gaultier show were a big surprise when they hit the runway, and not just because of Gaultier's iconoclastic ensembles. The designer sent out an army of Amy Winehouse clones, all bedecked in huge beehives, thick retro eyeliner, and Ms. Winehouse's signature "beauty mark" (which was actually a piercing). One of the doppelgängers was even smoking a cigarette. Gaultier genuinely seems to be inspired by Amy's singular sense of style and her music as well - the soundtrack to the show was comprised entirely of her songs. So far, reviews of the collection are positive, and everyone involved seems well intentioned. Still, given how recently Amy passed, is it fair to ask whether copying her look is appropriate just yet?
