Coming Soon: Clinique Play in the Darks Collection

If you're part of TeamSugar's Clinique Clique, you already know that Clinique has an easy-to-wear color collection along with its famed skin care line. If not, its fall colors are reason enough to get acquainted with Clinique's eye shadows, mascaras and lip colors.

The new items won't be in stores until August, but I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at Clinique's new Play in the Darks collection. It's all about "blackened color," but not in a goth, I-hate-my-parents way. Instead, the hues are rich, saturated and smoldering. I think this collection will be a big hit because its colors are intense but not heavy, so they're wearable whether you're 17 or 71. One of Clinique's best-selling items is Almost Lipstick in Black Honey, a universally flattering deep rose that has a huge cult following. That's why I was so excited to find out about a new limited-edition shade called Black Plum. As a sister shade to Black Honey, it's perfect. It's just slightly darker, but because it's sheer, it isn't too much.

Another new product is Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss, a larger and more moisturizing version of Superbalm Tinted Lip Treatment. It comes in eight shiny shades, including a gorgeously glistening magenta called Raspberry that I have to try!

Coming Soon: Bobbi Brown Nautical Collection

Makeup artist Bobbi Brown was inspired by a bike trip in Brittany and Normandy (jealous) when she created her Nautical Collection. "There were all of these locals that were walking around with their blue-and-white striped shirts, and they just had the most incredible skin tones - almost like stained cheeks and stained lips, that they had been out in the sun," she said in this video.

The great thing about sheer tones is they're easy to apply and blend. Plus, you can get a little more daring with your color choices. "If you don't usually wear a red or a plum or an orange tone, you can get away with it when it's very sheer," Brown added. I concur. Find out more about the collection when you read more.

Starting in May, Brown's got six Sheer Color Cheek Tints ($22) and four limited-edition punchy-toned Sheer Color Lip Glosses ($20 each) perfect for the warmer months ahead. She's also launching Perfectly Defined Mascara ($24) in black, a multicomb brush mascara that's supposed to easily wipe off in lukewarm water. Doing Drugstore: Maybelline Define-A-Line Eyeliner

Enhancing your eyes with shades opposite of your eye color is one of the best techniques to make them pop. And since I've been moving beyond black and brown eyeliners as of late, I recently picked up Maybelline Define-A-Line Eyeliner in Rich Raisin ($4.49), a smoky plum hue great for my green-pigmented irises. (It would would beautiful on all eye colors, particularly on deep brown or hazel eyes.)

This eyeliner comes in eight shades, from Navy Blue to Khaki Green, to Ebony Black. I love the subtlety of Rich Raisin, a slightly brownish shade with a non-obnoxious burgundy tint. Other pros? The no-need-to-sharpen tip, ultrasmooth application (no pulling or clumping here), and the built-in spongy smudger on the opposite end.

The cons? I experienced some slight resistance when applying the product to my waterline due to it's creamier quality. Also, although this eyeliner is long-wearing, I had to perform a retouch by end of day due to some minor fading and slight smearing. But, it is a smudgier type of formulation, so a little wear-off is to be expected, no? When it comes down to it, Maybelline's Define-A-Line Eyeliner gets the thumbs up for the value, shade selection, and ease of use. So, if I had to define this (eye)liner, I'd say it's a plum deal.

A Plum Deal At Nicole Miller

Backstage at Nicole Miller, key makeup artist James Kaliardos used MAC products to create a look that complemented the designer's vision for Spring. I caught up with him backstage to find out how he dreamed it up. Here's what he had to say.

What was your inspiration for this look?
It's the Voodoo Collection, so it's kind of like a strong voodoo eye. The eyes are very prominent, the lips are present. It's healthy and sexy.

What products are you using?
It's a plum smoky eye on top and bottom. Inside the inner eye rim, there's this bright, dark blue. We're using this new golden orange reflective blush on the cheeks, so it's a healthy, suntan-y look. And we're using a new product that's not a lip gloss or stick, in a neutral color.

Do you think we'll see that look a lot for Spring 2009?
It's a modernized version of things we saw for Fall, but this is plum instead of black. It's still a strong eye. It's a classic look. The orange blush makes it a little fresher. Anyone can wear this blush, it's a coral color.

How does the makeup complement the clothes?
There's a lot of color in the show and a lot of patterns, and so we wanted to have a little bit of color but overall a sort of subtle look that's sexy and I think we managed to do that by adding the plum to the eye. Plum turns deep and dark so it doesn't look like a color, but it is. And it isn't brown or black and it looks good on everyone.
