Recently, I made my yearly - OK, it's been more than a year - trip to the eye doctor. I've worn glasses for about 14 years now, and from one "trendy" frame to another, I've had lots of different looks. Since some were good, and others I'd prefer to forget, that was the inspiration behind this series of posts on choosing eyeglass frames. Since we've already looked at face shape, eye color, and skin tone, for the final installment of this series, let's look at how your hair color can help guide you when making a choice between those funky green shades or whimsical yellow specs. Does Dyeing Your Hair Blond Really Make You Look Younger?

This is one of those things I always hear, and a lot of women, like Anna Wintour here, do seem to opt for blond as they get older. I always assumed women go blond in their 40s and 50s because it's the easiest way to cover gray, but I've heard some vague evolutionary biology stuff thrown around, too, where people say that blond = youth. Because babies have lighter hair than adults, generally, blondes read as more fertile and youthful. But I just don't see it. It seems to me that a flattering shade is a lot more effective than just going lighter, and tons of babies are born with beautiful black hair. What do you think? Is there some truth to this, or is it all pseudo-science and no substance?

Six Risk Factors That Increase Your Chance of Developing a Melanoma

Have you ever had a sunburn so extreme that it blistered? Take caution. You could be at least three times more likely to develop a melonoma. A recent study, conducted by the melanoma screening service MoleMap by Dermatologists, identified six risk factors that could pose possible warning signs. Here they are:

Natural red or blond hair.
Freckling located on the upper back area.
A history of melanoma within your family.
Teenage sunburns that resulted in blisters.
Summer jobs outdoors that lasted for three or more years during your teenage years.
Tendency to get scaly patches of skin on areas of the skin that have received sun exposure.

If one of these statements is true for you, then you are three times more likely to develop a melanoma. However, you are 10 times more at risk if two or more of these circumstances apply to you. If you're concerned, heed the advice of MoleMap director Dr. Martin Haskett. "It is important to note that although most of the questions in the survey related to sun exposure, once the risk factors are present a malanoma can appear at any time of year and in non sun-exposed body sites," he says. "This means people need to check their skin year-round and medical surveillance programs for those at highest risk."

Do Brunettes Make Better Wives?

How about blondes - do they make better girlfriends? Well, yes and yes. At least that's what the results of a new survey say. According to British hairstylist Andrew Collinge, whose company polled 3,000 men, "When it comes to marriage, men seem to opt for brunettes as they see them as more dependable and down-to-earth."

We've all heard the expression that blondes have more fun, and in this case, that means more dates, but does it also mean a walk down the aisle? Survey says. . . no. In fact, more than half of the blokes said that brunettes were marriage material due their dependable and sensible natures.

Let's get real, though: This type of thinking is antiquated. We all know it's really what's on the inside that matters (at least that's what mama always said). And as Collinge so wisely advises, "At the end of the day, men marry a person, not just a head of hair." I've got to agree with that - so what's with these surveys in the first place? Blondes Have More Fun, TV Anchor Jobs

You know the phrase "blondes have more fun"? A somewhat bizarre story at Slate tips the idea on its head. The writer observes the dominance of blonde newscasters in the news business, calling it "TV's Aryan sisterhood." I'm not sure that's an appropriate phrase for it-nor, technically the most accurate-but he's definitely picking up on a trend.

The article mentions that "only one in 20 white adult Americans is a genuine blond, yet one in three adult American females has the look." Writer Jack Shafer goes on to jokingly complain that many female newscasters lie about their true hair color. While it's true that Katie Couric and Andrea Mitchell (who's married to Alan Greenspan, no joke!) haven't always been blonde, how many women over 40 haven't colored their hair? By the time I finished reading the story, I wondered what the point of it was. I kept looking for a nuanced explanation of the cultural reasons this could be happening, something more than the no-duh idea that blonde hair can make women look younger. Instead, aside from a token mention of two male anchors who color their hair, the story just pokes fun at the female anchors' blondeness. Culminating with a few musings on the popularity of collagen injections-in which Shafer likens Rita Cosby's lips to "a pair of oily, red eels mating angrily"-it winds up making these women into a big ol' joke.

While I do have issues with TV news, none of them concern hair. Shouldn't women should be able to change their hair color without it being a strike against their professionalism or competence? Maybe we should be asking why TV anchors are judged on their appearance in the first place-as it should have nothing to do with their ability to do their jobs.

Bella Donna: Debbie Harry

I'm holding myself from bursting out with some bad "Rapture" rappin', because this week's Bella Donna is the fabulous Debbie Harry. Of course, you probably know her better as Blondie, the name of her band that nonetheless has become her nickname. One of the 20th century's iconic blondes, her '70s platinum hair was punky but accessible-much like her band's music.

Before leaping to fame as Blondie's lead singer, Debbie was a waitress, a dancer and even a Playboy Bunny. But as the front of Blondie, she lept to fame with hits such as "One Way or Another," "The Tide is High," and "Heart of Glass." To see a photo gallery of Ms. Harry, read more

As Debbie has aged, she has admitted to having plastic surgery. According to Starpulse, she recently said:

"Everybody knows that I've had plastic surgery. I did it for business reasons. You photograph better, and looks are a key part of being an entertainer, so I felt it was something I had to do. All sorts of horrific things happen in life. Why make it worse by worrying about getting older?

Seems like she's cool with having cosmetic surgery, but I have to agree: "Everybody" can tell that she's had it done. Rather than watch her, um, not age, I prefer to reflect on the Debbie Harry of yore, whose natural beauty (well, save for the bottle blonde) made it look as though she could knock a man over just by looking at him.

Love It or Hate It? Queen Latifah's Blonde Hair
