It's Breast Cancer Awareness month, as you probably know from the thousands of pink products in stores right now. But I've got a bone to pick: What's with so many BCA items being stingy with the donations? A $30 product that gives only $1 to charity is no great shakes.

Not to sound too preachy, but sun safety starts with you, no matter your age or complexion. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, yet it's also the most preventable and curable form (when detected early). While remembering to apply sunscreen daily is your responsibility, The Skin Cancer Foundation is pitching in with a national tour to keep you in check.

I didn't know that makeup artist Sonia Kashuk was a breast cancer survivor, but it turns out she had a double mastectomy after being diagnosed last year. Sadly, breast cancer runs in her family—both her grandmother and mother were diagnosed with the disease—but fortunately, Sonia is healthy now.
Now that she's beaten cancer, she's planning some new products for her Target cosmetics line, and money raised will benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

As I am sure you all know by now, Avon is a huge supporter of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In addition to offering a variety of "pink ribbon products" such as this Breast Cancer Lip Balm with SPF 15 ($1.50, with all profits donated to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade), the company sponsors several walks to raise money for breast cancer research and prevention.
If you are wondering what you can do to help on the last days of the month, this lip balm is an affordable way to make a contribution.

All sorts of beauty companies typically include some variation of pink products and/or packaging in observance of this devastating disease, usually donating a percentage of the profits to support the cause.

As you probably know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — hence all of the pink ribbons on everything from golf balls to laptop computers. We at Team Bella receive dozens of pitches about BCA beauty products. But while we enthusiastically support efforts to raise funds for cancer research and prevention efforts, it can be frustrating to see BCA products that donate a minuscule or unspecified amount of cash to the cause.

This isn't shocking, given the genetic component in so many diseases, but it's another piece of news to make you wear your sunscreen and ask if someone in your family has had skin cancer. Melanoma, as well as other skin cancer types, have been proven heritable. Researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia found that if one twin in a set has melanoma, the other's risk increases 10 fold, while a fraternal twin's risk more than doubles if one has had it.

I'm not too attached to my moles, but a DIY approach to removing them? Scary territory. It's not hard to find mole-removing creams and lotions on the Internet, and while it might be tempting to rid yourself of an unsightly dark spot, think twice before you decide to play doctor.
