Beauty Marked! Deep-Cleansing Shampoos

Last week I asked you to suggest your favorite cleansing shampoos, and you definitely found some good ones!

Marcella loves Lush's Big shampoo: "It's by far the best cleansing shampoo for people who use a ton of styling products (like me)!" I agree-this stuff lathers like crazy, smells amazing and leaves hair looking shiny and bouncy.

Then there's Rachelattack, who suggests using good old-fashioned baking soda! She says that adding a bit to a regular shampoo transforms it into a cleansing shampoo. I might have to try this.

Leeluvfashion and Bigestivediscuit both rave about Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo, which takes me back to junior high. Come to think of it, my hair did look good and shiny back then-aside from the (gulp) spiral perm.

Beauty Mark It! Cleansing Shampoos

Think about how much styling product you use on your hair, and you'll begin to understand why it needs the occasional deep clean. I've recently fallen in love with Tonic from Bumble and Bumble, which leaves my hair looking clean and bouncy for days on end. Seriously, I could go for three days without looking like Countess Von Greasyhair.

There are so many shampoos out there that claim to do various things, so it's nice when you find something simple and un-gimmicky that works well. Reader laratf says the Ted Gibson Daily Cleanse ($25) has a lot to recommend it despite its high price:

"You [only] need a very small amount of this to get a good lather. Ted Gibson Daily Cleanse leaves hair really clean without stripping it or drying it out. I am loving the scent and the texture of my hair (which I abuse daily with a flat iron and blow dryer). GREAT stuff."

Dear Bella: Help Smooth My NOLA Frizzies

Recently, I received an email from a Bella reader, and I knew I had to help. Here's her dilemma:

I have slightly wavy, very thick, and frizzy long hair. I live in constant humidity here in New Orleans, LA. I am not sure chemicals are the answer for me because technically my hair is already straight for the most part, but I would be willing to try a chemical procedure if it will smooth my frizzies and give me a sleek shine. I would love to try a new color when I finally learn how to control my mane. And for the record, I have never dyed my hair and only used heat in my hair about every three months so it should be healthy - can't tell behind all this frizz, though.

Winter weather often means dry, Winter hair - which often leads to frizz. But, since you're living in a more humid climate, excess moisture in the air is attracted to the the porosity of hair, which causes it to swell up. Frustration. While any chemical service will open up the hair's cuticle (which can also cause frizziness - ugh!), consult with a stylist for details on gentle hair color services and straightening options. But when it comes to defrizzing at home, here are some tips to keep your hair tame. The whole point is to keep your cuticle flat, protect your hair, and repel excess moisture:

Cleansing: Shampooing daily can make the hair behave badly. If you must shampoo every day, consider using a smoothing shampoo, washing only the roots to remove oils. Then, condition the hair shaft and ends to keep hair hydrated without weighing it down. To finish, blast your hair cold water to seal the cuticle as you rinse.
Don't touch: After washing, let your hair air-dry. Whatever you do, don't aggravate your locks by rubbing the towel all willy-nilly. Instead, try keeping your hair wrapped in that towel a little longer to absorb excess water. Then, apply an antihumidity smoothing cream like Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother ($24), distribute with a wide-toothed comb, and let it be.
Yes to silicone. No to alcohol: Once your hair has dried, apply a silicone serum to boost shine and further prevent the dreaded frizz. Try Citre Shine Shine Anti-Frizz Serum ($6.89). Something to avoid? Products with alcohol, which can be drying and frizz inducing.
If you must add heat: Apply a heat protector first to prevent damage. If using a blow-dryer, point the nozzle downward to avoid ruffling up the cuticle. For even smoother results, use a flat iron to help manage those wild strands. But whatever you do, always use protection.

As the er, wise Billy Madison once said during his bath time battle of shampoo vs. conditioner, "Shampoo is betta. I go on first and clean the hair." Sorry - the immature side of me just couldn't resist that one. But, when it comes to shampoo, Billy Madison is right.

How-To: Prevent Greasy Bangs

Right after my freshman year in college, my high school friends and I decided to have a girls-only Mexican dinner at the local Chi-Chi's (remember that restaurant?). As we were getting ready for our big night, I reached for a can of what I thought was hairspray to finish off my look, and my bangs just kept getting greasier and greasier. Oops - I had grabbed my friend's high sheen finishing spray, instead!

Needless to say, most of the photos from that night showcase my Jennifer Aniston "The Rachel" haircut, complete with stick-to-the forehead bangs. If I had only known about these tips below, maybe I wouldn't have to have lied that it was my birthday just to get the free sombrero gift just to cover up that oily fringe.

Dry shampoo - Use a dry shampoo or powder between shampoos to tame the oily factor, such as Bumble and Bumble Hair Potion ($34), which comes in a variety of colors, Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion ($23), or Johnson's Baby Powder ($5.69).
Pin it back - Obvious, yes. Greasy bangs? No. Try a cute hair accessory instead. These Leafy Barrettes ($9.95) from Anthropologie should do the trick.
Just wash your bangs - A shampoo with an oil control formulation will work wonders for bang only cleansing. Try Matrix Scalptherapie Cooling Mint Shampoo ($12).

Don't condition - Condition your hair, but not your bangs.
Keep the complexion oil free - Try a water based foundation like Revlon Colorstay for Combo/Oily Skin ($12.99) and touch up with a powder such as Revlon ColorStay Pressed Powder ($9.99) as needed.
Hands off - Oils from your hands can make an oily situation worse, so keep them away from your face area.
A little dab will do ya - Use blotting papers when you feel your oil glands go in overdrive. I like Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets ($5.29).
Blow dry - Run a blow dryer over your bangs to absorb excess oil. It might not work for extreme oiliness, but it's an easy temporary fix.
