Whose Cool Cornrows Are These?

Cornrows are one of those hairstyles that never go out of fashion - they look good, they keep your hair healthy, and the upkeep on them is relatively low as long as you keep them touched up and well cared for. It's no wonder, then, that they're a perennial favorite celebrity style. Can you guess who's 'rowing it in these pics, or do you need to brush up on your braids?

Does This Woman Look Professional to You?

When you look at this woman, what do you see? A young Air Force officer, maybe? Someone serving her country in the military? Someone who looks neat, polished, and put together? That's what I see.

But according to Treasured Locks, the military disagrees. This soldier, Kim Andrews, has been in the Air Force for seven years, but her mother says she's being threatened with a dishonorable discharge because of her hairstyle, which involves twisting her hair into cornrows, a style that's allowed in the Air Force. Dreadlocks aren't allowed, and apparently Kim's commander thinks they're dreadlocks. Here's an excerpt from the military code:

Braids, micro-braids, and cornrows are authorized. However, must be solid color similar to the individual’s hair color; conservative and not present a faddish appearance, be worn in an extreme or fad style, or violate safety requirements.

I've looked at a gallery of Kim's hairstyle, and I don't see any evidence of an "extreme or fad style." In every instance it looks natural, practical, and professional. Afrobella puts it best when she asks, "Don’t we need professionally-trained military officials now, more than ever? Why would anyone give sisters in the military grief over their hair?" It was all about the modern gypsy at Nicholas K's Spring 2012 show today as designer siblings Nicholas and Christopher Kunz sent models down the runway decked out in silken layers complete with long head scarves, nomadic leather platform sandals, and side cornrow braids. For daywear the duo showcased sheer dresses layered underneath glazed cropped ponchos, while nightwear focused on long silk gowns, gracefully flowing down the runway. With a color palette of warm, vibrant earth tones, the collection took on a functional futuristic aesthetic. We especially loved the perfectly layered look, see middle image, comprised of light tan trench and draped skirt paired with a knotted cream top. More highlights from the show below.

Trends: Cropped capes, asymmetric hemlines, glazed/metallic jackets, sheer dresses, urban gypsy.

Colors: White, tan, copper, green, blue, black, gray.

Key Look: A short sheer copper print dress paired with a matching glazed poncho jacket.

Just How Bad Are Extensions For Your Hair?

This week a hair loss expert at the London Centre of Trichology came out and said that in the last two years, he's seen a 15 percent increase in women seeking treatment after damaging their hair with glue extensions - which he now believes should be straight-up banned before they scalp more women. The trichologist told the BBC that the extension-related hair loss is traction alopecia, which is a condition caused when too much tension is regularly placed on the hair roots, pulling out the hairs, and damaging the follicles permanently. Yikes! We asked New York City dermatologist Francesca Fusco, who specializes in hair loss, if hair extensions are going to give us hair reductions in the long run.
