Whose Cool Cornrows Are These?

Cornrows are one of those hairstyles that never go out of fashion - they look good, they keep your hair healthy, and the upkeep on them is relatively low as long as you keep them touched up and well cared for. It's no wonder, then, that they're a perennial favorite celebrity style. Can you guess who's 'rowing it in these pics, or do you need to brush up on your braids?

Does This Woman Look Professional to You?

When you look at this woman, what do you see? A young Air Force officer, maybe? Someone serving her country in the military? Someone who looks neat, polished, and put together? That's what I see.

But according to Treasured Locks, the military disagrees. This soldier, Kim Andrews, has been in the Air Force for seven years, but her mother says she's being threatened with a dishonorable discharge because of her hairstyle, which involves twisting her hair into cornrows, a style that's allowed in the Air Force. Dreadlocks aren't allowed, and apparently Kim's commander thinks they're dreadlocks. Here's an excerpt from the military code:

Braids, micro-braids, and cornrows are authorized. However, must be solid color similar to the individual’s hair color; conservative and not present a faddish appearance, be worn in an extreme or fad style, or violate safety requirements.

I've looked at a gallery of Kim's hairstyle, and I don't see any evidence of an "extreme or fad style." In every instance it looks natural, practical, and professional. Afrobella puts it best when she asks, "Don’t we need professionally-trained military officials now, more than ever? Why would anyone give sisters in the military grief over their hair?" Good question. What do you think?

Love It or Hate It? Joss Stone's Threaded Cornrows

Last night at the MTV Euro Music Awards, Joss Stone had the most unusual hairdo of the night. While one side of her hair was swept into an updo, the other side was separated by cornrows laced with pale pink thread. We've seen her sport some unusual hairdos on the red carpet, but this is the first time I remember her working thread into her hair. I think cornrows can look cool, but this half-and-half look is a little too Jekyll-and-Hyde for my tastes. What do you think of this hairstyle on Joss?

How-To: Make Your Ponytail More Exciting

There are many times when tossing that hair back into a ponytail is just the easiest option, particularly during the warmer months. But, do you ever get bored by the same old, same old?

Herbal Essences stylist to the stars, Charles Baker Strahan has already shared with us a fresh haircut idea for Spring, and now, he's got some ideas on making your ponytail stand out. "Ponytails can be very chic. It is all about where you place them and the texture you have in the hair," he says.

"Stick-straight hair begs for a very high pony or a very low one, whereas I like a middle placement for more natural or wavy textures," says Strahan. Feeling more adventurous? "I enjoy seeing small braids or twists (in an odd number) on someone with a natural/wavy texture because it adds romance to a midrange pony," he added.

As far as high ponytails are concerned, Strahan likes adding three cornrows above the brow for an edgier feel. What's your favorite option for this go-to style?

Three Tips For a Great Braid Out

The grass is always greener on someone else's scalp. Well, you know what I mean: Girls with curls often lust after stick straight styles and vice versa. We've gathered several tips for sleek blowouts, but let's tackle making waves, heat-free. Curly-haired Bella is a fan of something called a "braid out," an easy way for people of any hair texture to have soft waves without a permanent change or hours of QT with a curling iron. Before you head in to braid out, find a couple things to consider when you read more.

Know how your braids last best. If your hair type becomes more flyaway and slippery with shampoo or conditioner, skip that step before starting this style. (Personally, I condition only and do not wash.)
Holding product equals holding power. Add your favorite leave-in after stepping out of the shower with a bit of spray gel/ hairspray on your wet hair before starting each section. Sleeping on the wet style will allow you to get curlies while you (don't) wait . . . and offer conditioning time, too.
Wavy, wavier, waviest as desired. Typically, more braids mean more waves and thicker hair will result in more volume and require more braids for more definition. You'll get a much tighter curl from several cornrows than you will from one tight French braid style, but it's not essential to use those braiding techniques. Just know, the closer you can get to your scalp when starting, the higher up your waves will begin.

If you're not a self-styling pro, grab a pal and take turns braiding each other's hair. It's like Summer camp all over again . . . this time minus the chlorine and bug bites.

How to Use Canned Air For Your Hair

Let's say you went on a beach vacay, decided it'd be fun to get cornrows (à la Bo Derek in the Acapulco-based film 10), and then get home to realize you have no clue how to care for them. Shampooing, conditioning, or adding your traditional product to the newly braided part can result in flakes no matter how well it's rinsed out, especially if they're only on a small section of your head.Take my tip from a pal with dreadlocks – use that canned air ($5) traditionally meant to clean computers to keep your hair flake free. Since it comes with a fine straw, you can get into the tiny crevices and blow the air through to remove dust and debris. Word to the wise: don't stay on one section too long because the icy air can freeze hair. . .and probably wait 'til your coworkers are gone for the day to avoid some crazy looks (wink wink).

Love It or Hate It? The Modern Cornrow at Custo Barcelona

We'll get to the hair in a sec, but first let's take a moment to appreciate the gorgeous, dewy skin on this model backstage at the Custo Barcelona show. Her braids remind me of cornrows (or over-braids), only they don't start at the scalp. I really like how there is a few inches of shiny smooth hair and then about a dozen or so individual braids flowing around the head. What do you think of this modern cornrow look?

Trend Alert: Goth Lips at London Fashion Week

At London Fashion Week, I noticed a couple of outlandish beauty trends such as crimped hair and modern cornrow braids. But what I remember most vividly from my backstage access was the look of goth lips.

Designers like Julian MacConald, Nathan Jenden, Ossie Clark and Inbar Spector all chose a midnight lip to reflect a chic and distinguishable edge. I'm not a big fan of morbid makeup, but it definitely has shock value on the runway. Would you ever wear blood-colored lipstick?
