Trend Alert: Wrinkle in Time

Or should I say wrinkle in a time machine? This 1980s hairstyle often pops up here and there, reminding us that crinkly, crimpy hair will probably never die.

Featured in several shows from Paris to London to New York, the style ranged from severe Christian Dior (upper left) to a more straight down, everyday style à la Christian Lacroix, Ruffian, and Karen Walker. For good measure, Jenny Packham added her own simple updo version, too (lower right). Maybe it's time I dig out the ol' pink crimper myself - in moderation, of course.

Love It or Hate It? Fergie Crimps Her Style

G'day, Fergie! The singer (and new MAC spokeswoman) is in Australia with the Black Eyed Peas. It's been a long time since we've seen crimped hair, but if anyone has the attitude to wear them with confidence, it's Fergie. What do you think of this '80s throwback? Would you ever bust out the crimping iron again?

Love It or Hate It? Crimped Hair and Lavender Lips at Rachel Comey

Fab and I both loved Rachel Comey's geeky-chic styles on the runway, but something tells me you'll have strong opinions on the hair and makeup that went with them. I think the softly crimped, pulled-back hair is inventive-even if the purple-tinted lips reminded me of hypothermia. What do you think?

Love It or Hate It? Tyra Banks' Crimped Hair

Ah, the crimper - what a magical little heating device. Every now and then, we see a resurgence of the style, and Tyra's not the only one to try to bring it back. She sported this style at a taping of her show, where she celebrated Vogue Italia's first all-black model issue. I'm all for bringing back modified versions of the oldies, but tell me - do you like Tyra's hair like this? Or would you prefer her to get a hair makeover along with the new ANTM models?

Is Sun-In Back?

Raise your hand if you've tried Sun-In. My hand is raised - and so were my mother's eyebrows when I tried several squirts of the hair lightener back in junior high. My locks transformed into a rusty orange tone, and it wasn't pretty.

It always seems that everything old is new again. Remember how crimped hair was so well-represented at 2009 Spring Fashion Week? Well, if that wasn't old-school enough for you, word is that everyone's favorite low-cost beach spray, Sun-In ($5), is making a comeback. My advice - unless your hair is already blond or lighter brown, head to the salon for any and all attempts at lightening your hair. You know, unless you totally dig a carrot top.

It's Playboy-Inspired Sexytime at Miss Sixty

"Miss Sixty is always very sexy," stylist Andy Bodine said before models hit the catwalk with big, bouncy, voluminous hair. "It’s a combination of smooth, shiny, polished hair that looks healthy, but also has some kinks in it."

Some of the length was due to extensions, but creating the look at home is surprisingly do-able. After running ghd Maximise Mousse through hair to create lift and hold, dry hair while using a round brush at the roots to create volume and height. Create crimps by gathering hair into loops, then setting it with a styling iron. "The [ghd iv] styler creates crimps and bends," Bodine told me. "It’s a great way to use your styling iron."

Speaking of sexy, let's chat about the makeup. "The look was inspired by Playboy in the late '60s and early '70s - when it was cool," said makeup artist Romy Soleimani. "It’s a rounded smoky eye with black liner and black pigment." Don't go for the cat-eye with this one; instead, think soft and curved. Kind of like a pin-up model, huh?

Oh man, I remember this commercial. I also remember eagerly awaiting the day when I, too, could have crimped or curled hair from one simple styling tool. Unfortunately, 20 years on, the jingle hasn't left my head, so you may as well join me in reliving the horror.

Backstage Beauty: VPL

Last week, our FabSugar team attended the VPL Spring 2008 Fashion Show. While the clothing was sheer and chic, and the makeup was pretty and plain, the hair was va va voom!

While most of us do whatever we can to fight the frizzies, hairstylist extraordinaire Neil Moodie, created a wild, crimped 'do that made those frizzies, kinda flattering. All of the products he used were from Bumble and Bumble, and the entire process is relatively easy to achieve.

Step 1: - Spray dry, clean hair with Bumble and Bumble Tonic and then work in a little bit of Bumble and Bumble Styling Creme to the roots and lengths of your hair.
Step 2: Next, on the underside of the head, lightly crimp small sections of hair. When hair is cool, brush out the hair to create volume. Next, gently tease (back-comb) the hair at the roots.
Step 3: Flip head over and spray with Bumble and Bumble Does It All. As final step, flip hair up and then brush it out really well one more time (yes, it will be quite full looking).
