Take a Peek at the Trendiest Nail Polish Collections For Fall

As far as Fall nail polish trends are concerned, I foresee lots of hot pinks, mushroom tones, smoky metallics, burnt oranges, deep, intense greens, and the return of purple - but with a little less smoke and a little more attitude. As far as textures go, think mattes, creams, and brushed, velvety finishes. But, if you're a fan of the shimmer, don't fret. There's plenty of sparkle to go around. Like most makeup collections, nail polish colors take inspiration straight from the runways, and since nails are a fashion accessory, after all, many of these recently launched polish shades come straight to us from the Fall catwalks. Let's just say I'm not bored.

Haute Couture Fall '08: Dior

It's couture season in Paris as Lanvin opens the week with a party. The first day included a John Galliano for Dior show with celebrity support from Claudia Schiffer and Eva Mendes. Galliano showed his Spring couture line for Dior presenting a typically dramatic collection.

The pieces created a strong, architectural silhouette with towering diamante heels and oversized costume jewellery. There were plenty of hints towards next seasons key trends including sheer, tiny belted waists and Victorian style skirts.

The colour palette was varied from cream pieces (including this ruffle skirt dress) to animal print. See below for images from the show.

Pastel Products Part 1: Easter-Egg Eye Shadow Shades

Spring will officially be here by week's end. This season is known for heavy pastel makeup shades, and 2008 is no exception. As we've seen in my post about Festive Floral Spring Beauty Buys, beauty brands have made pretty and pale floral products a big part of their offerings.

In my experience, the key to a winning pastel is substantial pigment. Too often I find wimpy pastels that wind up looking like a generic iridescent pink no matter if they are lilac, blue, green, or peach. This week I'll be talking more about face, cheek, and lip pastel products, but for now I've featured three of my favorite eye shadows below along with some photos of a few runner-ups.

Givenchy Prismissime 9 Colours Face and Eyeshadow Palette ($50) is actually part of the 2006 Spring collection, but there are still plenty available online for purchase. Each of the colors can be worn alone on the eyes (the corner shades are especially notable) or they can be blended together and gently swept over the face for a radiant glow. You're destined to have fun with all of these Easter-eggy shades to play with.

Dior 5-Color Iridescent Eyeshadow ($54) contains velvety-soft powder shadows that you can mix, match, and blend to your heart's content. My personal favorite of the bunch is the shimmery peach shade since it complements each of the others so well. If you use it in the inner v of your eye, you'll get a sweet and subtle daytime twinkle. Also, the deep-purple shade can double as an eyeliner.

Nars Single Eye Shadow in Night Fairy ($22) is an oldie but goodie. This golden pearly, pale-violet powder shadow looks dynamite on brown and hazel eyes. You can wear it alone, or add a taupey brown to the crease for extra depth.

The Beauty in Stem Cell Research

After years of research, Dior has recently launched a three-product anti-aging skin care range called Capture R60/80 XP. The claim is that the ingredients in the cream mimic the function of stem cells by hunting down your wrinkles and filling them in so that they eventually disappear.

In fact, they even have a schedule for you to keep wrinkle-watch. After one hour fine lines should be less visible, after six hours your skin is said to look smoother and fuller, and after an extended period of time (anywhere from two to six months) your skin is supposed to look renewed and younger.

How about that. I never thought I'd see the day where a topical product can distinguish a wrinkle from regular skin (although, I'd like to see it before I believe it). Knowing this, you may want to avoid putting it near any cute dimples you'd like to keep! I haven't had the chance to try anything in the line yet, but at least the cost isn't as terrible as I expected (not that it's super-cheap either).

I've had a peek at the new Spring 2008 Flower Blossom Collection from Dior, and the star product is springlike indeed. It's a gorgeous flower-embossed face powder palette ($45). Filled with five iridescent, pastel shades, this brightening compact is a beautiful way to highlight your cheeks and eyes.

It was inspired by the bright, enamel shades of Victoire de Castellane’s Diorette jewelry collection (pictured below) that was released in 2007. I have yet to see the rest of the makeup collection, but it is set to include ten additional products that are due on counters by mid-January.

Happy 60th Birthday, Dior!

To celebrate the sixtieth birthday of Dior, house designer John Galliano and perfumier François Demachy have created a trio of limited-edition fragrances called La Collection Particulière. The scents pay homage to Miss Dior, the original perfume created in 1947-the same year Christian Dior introduced the "new look" at his first fashion show. La Collection Particulière captures the sophisticated and feminine aura that Dior has maintained for six decades.

The three fragrances are inspired by three past Dior models and muses: France, Lucky and Victoire. Each scent focuses on one of three flowers: rose, iris, and tuberose.

Octavian Sever Coifan of 1000fragrances believes that the fragrances may also represent modern-day Dior models such as Stella Tennant (Passage N°4), Kate Moss (Passage N°8) and Gisele Bundchen (Passage N°9).

The bottles are made from Baccarat crystal - the same material used in the original and elegant Dior fragrances. The colors of the flacons are the same colors as the French flag. Each bottle is 2.5 ounces and sells for a hefty $490 in 30 Dior boutiques around the world.

La Collection Particulière Passage N°4 is a rose based fragrance blended with notes of orange, pepper, amber and musk. It is named after the Dior muse, France.
La Collection Particulière Passage N°8 is an iris based perfume blended with violet and musk from ambrette seeds. It is named after the Dior muse, Lucky.

Dior Steps into the Limelight for Holiday 2007

When I went to Bloomingdale's the other day, I was a really good girl-I just looked at all of the holiday collections and held off on buying anything. One that was really difficult to resist was Dior's Limelight collection, which uses some gorgeous colors to create a soft, shimmery look. Like Guerlain and MAC, it's heavy on the gold-but it's a soft gold, not a brassy one.

DiorLight Holiday Bright lip gloss ($90) is the biggest splurge of the bunch. It's a jeweled pendant that houses a bronzed pink lip gloss. It's also out of my budget, but Santa, if you're reading....
Style Liner ($30) is a liquid eyeliner. It normally comes in black, but for the holidays, Dior has released a warm gold color called 24K Gold. It looks pretty, but unless you're going to wear a lot of gold eyeliner, it seems a little pricey to me.
Crème de Gloss ($24.50) is a lip gloss with tiny sparkles. For the holidays, Dior has released it in Golden Glam.
Diorshow Powder ($40) is a translucent shimmer powder. You can either dust it on your face or over your decolletage-which would be a stunning effect with a strapless dress.
5-Colour Eyeshadow ($52) in Amber Treasure is Limelight's penta-palette. (Like how I coined that term?) It has five shadows in cream, heathered lavender, light pink, buff and a warm bronze. If you're fair-skinned like this blonde model, it's probably a good fit. If your complexion is darker, I think it might be a little too light-I would recommend the Sweet Illusion palette instead, since its colors are richer.

Crouching Models, Hidden Fashion

All my life I've been told by my mother not to slouch and to stand up straight. So then why is okay for models to purposely slouch, crouch and hunch over? Haven't their mothers taught them to stand up straight? All this hit me years ago when I noticed then-famous swimwear model Elsa Benitez crouching over in nearly every photo. It was as if she was built that way. Correct me if I'm wrong but models are supposed to show off clothes, but how can they show off an outfit if they're crouched over? One can't deny that a dress looks better on a girl who's standing up straight.

I understand that models are trying express creativity in their poses, but sometimes they take it too far. Browsing the latest magazines, I noticed that some crouches are more extreme than others: Dior's ads with Jessica Stam, and Emporio Armani and Dolce & Gabbana's latest ads. What do you think - are crouching models hiding fashion? Is this high fashion or simply foolish?

Paris Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Christian Dior

Take Marlene Dietrich, put her in the boudoir, and she'll embody the mood and look of John Galliano's latest collection for Dior.

Her mannish suits, top hots, and heavily made up eyes all appeared on the runway. But Galliano didn't stop at just emulating the Marlene Dietrich that was, he carried her into the present - and the future - with mafia-worthy pinstripes, Cavalli-esque animal prints, and bedroom-ready negligees.

The lingerie odes were tangible: transparency here, lacy edging there. And some looks walked the line between racy and brash. But an overarching riff on the 30s flapper girl who dabbles in her gangster boyfriend's clothing prevailed, looking very Galliano for Dior indeed.

Sienna's Ready For Her Diddy-Free Interview

Sienna and a very weary looking Steve Buscemi screened their new movie Interview last night in NYC. The event was hosted by Dior Beauty, so of course Anna Wintour made an appearance. No idea what Daphne Zuniga was doing there, but doesn't it just make you nostalgic for the days of Melrose Place? Speaking of drama and scandalous behavior, Sienna is still rambling about her non relationship with Diddy, saying, “The amount of people I've been linked to that I've said, ‘Hi, nice to meet you,’ at a party, and then next minute I'm pregnant with their child." Well, we see Sienna's point, but late night rendezvousing is not exactly the same as shaking hands at a party. Just saying.

Christian Dior Cruise Collection 2008: Backstage Beauty

Last night in New York City, Christian Dior put on a fashion show to unveil John Galliano's 2008 ready-to-wear cruise collection. The look of the show was very 1960s mod, reminiscent of the looks we saw on the runways for fall and of Sienna Miller in Factory Girl.

The clothing was full of color, and the hair was bouffant and dramatic. Stylist Orlando Pita either created beehives or teased hair at the crown and placed a thick headband high on the forehead. Renowned makeup artist Pat McGrath also created magnificent mod looks on all of the models.

Face: Yes, these models have great skin, but that's also part of this look. For a flawless face, begin by using Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen to conceal dark circles and blemishes, then apply DiorSkin AirFlash Spray Foundation to create a beautiful semi-matte canvas.
Cheeks: All of these girls have a teensy bit of tan enhanced with a slight pink flush on their cheeks. Perhaps they were using Dior Bronze Sunshine Blush in Sunrise Party 001. Take a blush brush, swirl it across all four colors, and sweep the blush starting at the apples of your cheeks and working your way out toward your hairline.
Eyes:Since this looks is all about mod, the eyes and lips and the central points of focus. This new and very cool Dior Logo Palette is all that you are going to need! Start by applying the white shadow all over your lid. Next, choose either the pink or the purple and apply it on your lid stopping before the crease. Take the rust color and apply just a little bit for definition in the crease.
Next, heavily line your eyes by wetting the black shadow and drawing a line that will run from the inner corner of your eyelash line and extend out to create wings. This is going to be a heavy line, so be prepared to go over it a few times until you reach your desired length. Also, remember that the line gets increasingly thicker as you work your way outward. Then, line your lower lids and concentrate the thickness toward the outer corners as well.

Once you are finished with the black, take the white shadow and run it along the rims of your lower lashes to really make your eyes pop! Finish with two coats of the new Diorshow Black Out Mascara and an extra-long set of false lashes.
Lips: Line your lips with a pale pink liner, such as Dior Lipliner Pencil in Heather Rose, then fill in your lips completely. Next, apply a light layer of sheer nude/pink lipstick, such as Dior Addict Ultra Shine Sheer Lipcolor in Shiniest Beige, all over the lips. Lastly, take a tissue and blot lips once for a more matte finish. Do not use lip gloss for this look.

Cruise 2008: Christian Dior

The great John Galliano revealed his Cruise 2008 collection for Christian Dior on Monday night at 7 World Trade Center in New York City.

Talk about lots and lots of color and glitz! Waify but always beautiful models strutted down the crisp white runway in Indian-inspired tunics and jeweled head pieces. Others wore Palm Springsy glammed up taffeta and chiffon frocks, bustier-like bikinis, fitted skirt suits, cropped floral jackets, large hats, cat-eye sunglasses and small evening purses. It was as if two femme friends, one very Bollywood and the other addicted to Palm Springs chic, were on a very over-the-top vacay together. Fun in the sun!
