Ultra Rich Skin Relief with Biotherm's Baume Ultra Riche

I'm sometimes flaky (my skin, that is). Winter can cause peeling patches on my legs so, for the past three weeks, I've been testing a new product for extremely dry skin – Biotherm Baume Ultra Riche.

When squeezing the tube, I was first surprised how thick the cream felt (a dime-sized amount covered my entire leg and foot). It's rich with omega fats – which cut inflammation and irritation – and nourishing shea butter. I can definitely notice a difference in looks and appearance. This body balm lives up to its claim of intensive repairing and nourishment, but, be forewarned, it also includes apricot oil and pulp. This helps skin retain elasticity, clarity, and suppleness with an accompanying fruity aroma. At $23, the lotion's on the pricier side for this economy. But, since a little goes such a long way, I'd say it's worth the investment.

Welcome back to my five-part series on Fantastic Facial Creams for your skin type. (What skin type do you have? Tell me here.) Yesterday, I gave you the best face lotions for oily skin, and today, we'll explore face creams for dry skin.

There are actually two kinds of dry skin: oil dry and water dry. Oil dry means that you don't have enough oil in your skin, so you'll want to use a cream that contains natural oils. Water dry means that your skin is dehydrated and typically manifests itself in fine lines all over your face. If this is your skin type, drink plenty of water and look for a product with a humectant. Here are my recommendations for both types of dry skin.

Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion ($9.89) is formulated to soothe and nourish water-dry skin. It has an oil-free, fragrance-free, and non-greasy texture, and it contains humectants that enrich your skin with moisture. It's also great for sensitive skin, since it contains no irritation-causing lanolins or parabens.

Kiss My Face Lavender & Shea Butter Moisturizer ($4) is a body and face lotion in one. It contains calming lavender as well as shea butter, which will help cure and soothe oil-dry skin.

Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme Ultra Firming Creme for Very Dry Skin ($70) is great if you aren't sure which type of dry skin you have. It's rich in nutrients and will help moisturize tired skin that needs a lift. It gives your face a shiny, healthy glow, and it contains SPF 15 for sun protection. Use in the morning and in the evening, and within four weeks, you should see notice younger-looking skin.

Splurge of the Week: Wildflower Dry Oil

As much as I love testing beauty products, there are times when I wonder if I'll even remember to put on one more thing! However, that's not the case with Hollybeth's Wildflower Dry Oil. The elixir of botanical infusions and plant extracts (95 percent organic!) provides unparalleled moisture for my dryness. Normally, even my favorite face cream seems to vanish by morning, yet this leaves my skin feeling smooth after a night of shuteye. Simply use the included eyedropper (which can double as a cap) to drip onto fingers before applying to the flowery-scented oil to your face and neck twice daily.

It's said to diminish fine lines and counteract the formation of free radicals. Now, I've only been using it for a week so I can't report any visible changes, but I do know that I don't want to stop touching my soft face. Do You Dry Your Face With a Towel?

About a year ago I met an elderly woman who had the most gorgeous skin. I asked her what her beauty secret was and she told me that she air-dries her face.

She said that after washing, she wipes her product-covered hands on a towel, and therefore she would never dream of letting it touch her face. She believes that letting her face dry naturally and then patting on moisturizer and eye cream while her skin is still damp has given her this lovely complexion.

What she said makes sense, and from time to time-when I am feeling really patient-I'll let my face air-dry too. What are your thoughts on this? Do you ever dry your face with a towel?

Want something that smells good enough to eat and is incredibly moisturizing for dry, cold-chapped skin? Try a simple yogurt cocoa face mask. You just need a tablespoon of cheap cocoa butter ($1) and a half tablespoon of yogurt. Melt the cocoa butter in a saucepan over low heat, then mix in the yogurt until smooth. Pour your concoction into a bowl and let it cool to a comfortable temperature, then apply for 15 minutes and wash off with warm water.
