Fragrance Review: Calvin Klein Eternity Summer

Continuing with tradition, Calvin Klein will release this year's warm-weather version of the classic Eternity fragrance next month. Eternity Summer is a seaside-inspired remix of the original, spiced up with notes of bamboo, crushed basil, and jasmine, with base notes of musky neroli and ginger root.

It's an unusual and compelling blend of ingredients, but I can't say this one is going to be on my must-have list. At first it's hard to tell if Eternity Summer is complex or just confused. It hits the nose with a shockingly sweet floral burst, and further sniffing reveals a hint of spicy-sweet ginger combined with a very faint muskiness. It's too faint, unfortunately, to balance out the saccharine scent.

Eternity Summer is an attempt to achieve complexity by adding new ingredients, but it doesn't stray far from traditional floral freshness. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it didn't wow me. The upside is that this is a strong scent, so a few sprays will stick around for most of the day. This wasn't the right perfume for me, but if you're looking for a bright and bold summer floral, you can pick up a bottle of Eternity Summer by Calvin Klein ($52) at Macy's starting in April.

Last but never least is the newest lip service from Chanel called, CHANEL ROUGE DOUBLE INTENSITÉ ULTRA WEAR LIP COLOUR, $30, and is available in six bold colors. The color side is an extremely long lasting formula and the gloss side is clear and gloriously shiny. Just let the first coat dry and then apply the top coat. Then the only maintenance is to reapply the top coat throughout the day. Thanks Chanel for saving us one extra step!

Ashley Greene's hair and makeup are always totally different from her Twilight character Alice's, although she looks gorgeous either way. Tonight, her big, sexy bouffant hair complete with curly extensions, warm, peachy blush, and polished pink lips made her look more Young Hollywood than eternally young. What do you think, though? Bella Donna: Kim Gordon

Some people try to be cool; other people couldn't be uncool even if they tried. Kim Gordon falls into that latter category. She's probably most famous for playing guitar and singing in legendary art-rock band Sonic Youth, but she's also an accomplished visual artist, a clothing designer, a muse to Marc Jacobs, and easily the rockingest mom in Northampton, MA.

At 56, Kim doesn't seem to be using Botox or fillers, and she's just as striking as she was when Sonic Youth started out almost three decades ago. "I don’t make that much money," she has said with regard to high-priced anti-aging fixes. "I just hope my good bones will take me through." (Truthfully, I'd be heartbroken if Kim Gordon were to go down the preserve-youth-at-all-costs road.)

Kim's style - dirty blond shoulder-length hair, soft eyeliner, simple but chic dresses - is uniquely hers, but her Urban Outfitters clothing collaboration,
Mirror/Dash, makes it easy to take a few cues from her. Pop in Sonic Youth's latest, The Eternal, and you'll start feeling like a kool thing yourself.

How Do You Spend Salon Time?

A "quick trip" to the salon can take what feels like an eternity, especially if your stylist sees clients back-to-back or is double booked. Patience isn't exactly my best virtue, but salon time can be a great opportunity to sit back and not worry about all the things I could or should be doing. Even with the fun magazines I don't get at home, I'd be lying if I said I've never blogged while under the dryer. How do you most often spend your time in the stylist's chair?

Love It or Hate It? Heidi Montag Channels Chanel

A Chanel dress is eternally chic. Chanel's logo as a lip gloss is pretty cool, too. But nothing spells "classy" like having the iconic interlocking-C logo painted on your nails. While on a shopping spree, Heidi Montag displayed just that on her fingertips. Somehow, I imagine this look won't show up in Chanel's new ad campaign - and I imagine you'll have some opinions on this choice in nail art, too.

Nose Nostalgia: Revlon Jontue

There's something about this vintage ad for Revlon Jontue that makes me want it. I'm thinking it's because the commercial involves mist and horses and reminds me of The Princess Bride. Launched in 1975 with the tag line "Sensual... but not too far from innocence" (oh, that age old dilemma of womanhood), Jontue includes old-school notes like bergamont, tuberose, gardenia and sage.

Even into the '90s, most perfume ads were still ethereal and vaguely equestrian, like the black and white commercials for Ralph Lauren Romance and Calvin Klein Eternity (which also included horses). Recent fragrance ads are more about sex, diamonds, and celebrity. Do you sometimes yearn for fragrance's ladylike past?
