If you have ever had a facial, you've likely heard the term extraction. It might sound painful, but if done correctly, this simple and painless procedure removes pore-clogging sebum. It is done manually by a trained facialist, dermatologist, or esthetician using a metal tool or by applying gentle pressure, after they have cleansed your skin and opened your pores with heat or steam.

Keep in mind that pores are sensitive, and if your skin isn't prepared or the extraction is done incorrectly, it can cause broken capillaries and irritate the skin which may result in more breakouts. When in doubt, it is best to avoid the at-home extraction tools, and leave the squeezing to a professional.

What We're Sweet On: A Cooling Cleanser That Decongests

It's an oldie, but a goodie: Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser ($25). Besides, it's actually kind of fun to use. The two-step treatment begins by washing the face with the creamy, cooling cleanser, rubbing it in with circular motions to release dirt and makeup. The second step involves polishing the skin with a muslin cloth that's included as part of the kit. Once you rinse off the cloth and check out your mug in the mirror, skin feels smoothed and softened, and looks clearer and brighter.

This rich cleanser contains cocoa butter to hydrate, hops extract to tone, and rosemary essential oil to invigorate. Eucalyptus helps to decongest clogged skin, and gives that cooling, tingly sensation. But the best part? It's National Soup Month, so Stock Up on Stock

A good stock is the key ingredient which great soups are built upon. Whether you make your own stock at home or use store bought versions, the foundation of flavors provided by the stock is what keeps soups from being bland and uninteresting. Having stock on hand is really convenient if you're ever in a pinch for a quick meal. Grab the whatever leftover vegetables you have in your refrigerator, toss in some meat if you like, and you've got a heartwarming (and nutritious) meal in no time at all.

Homemaking stock is a simple and great way to make your leftover chicken carcass useful (and I love to find a purpose for seemingly useless items). Homemade chicken stock takes hours to make (a great weekend project idea) but the result is well worth the effort. Homemade vegetable stock takes much less time and is an important ingredient for vegetarians; it's so rewarding to make yourself. Stock freezes well and is easy to defrost making it easy to store and use.

A few basic stock-making tips include cooking the ingredients with cold water (to extract the collagen) and skimming off any scum in meat stocks. If you want to remove fat from your stock, cool it and spoon of the solidified fat that collects on top.

Here's a sweet protein treat from reader For the Love of Fiber. She posted this chocolate chickpea cookie recipe in our Healthy Recipe group.

Inspired by Jessica Seinfeld's recipe in Deceptively Delicious, after a few rounds and ingredient tweaks, I cracked the code to a not-too-sweet, soft, and tasty chocolate chip cookie, with, wait for it . . . chickpeas. Yes, protein and fiberlicious chickpeas. You can almost hear the "Hallelujah" chorus, can’t you?

If you don’t have palm sugar (get some), you can substitute it with brown sugar. Why palm sugar? Made from coconut tree nectar, it’s naturally low on the glycemic index, meaning that it won’t spike your blood sugar like white or brown sugar, and has significantly more potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, nitrogen, and sodium than its white and brown counterparts.
