Am I one of the odd ones who's always kind of liked my freckles? After all, "A face without freckles is like a night without stars," according to the old saying. There are lots of celebrities that share my affinity for freckles - and some that don't. When it comes to these fellow freckle-faced stars, can you guess who said what in regards to their own beauty marks?

A few days ago I told you how the makeup artists at MAC penciled in freckles at Matthew Williamson's Spring 2009 runway show. The look was meant to be fresh, fun, and a bit naughty.

Typically, it's freckle faders that people seek, not freckle-enhancing products. If you have freckles, do you love them or do you try to hide them?

Like tans, natural brows, and blowouts, freckles are one of those things that beauty insiders seem to vacillate about with rapid speed. Some of the same companies who make products that fade freckles have also come out with and discontinued freckle pencils (Lancome, Chanel). Luckily for those of us who are fans of ephiledes (that's science for freckles), Charlotte Tilbury's brought them back at Matthew Williamson. "We're painting on a few little freckles across the nose and on the tops of the cheeks where the sun would naturally bring them out with a lip pencil called Hodgepodge by MAC," said Tilbury. "It's a fresh young look that's a bit naughty." So naughty, in fact, that she revealed how she painted them on Kate Moss on a few occasions. One caveat: "For real life, use waterproof pencil!"

Makeup Tips for Freckle-Faced Femmes

Every now and then, I get an e-mail from someone who hates her freckles. Usually these dappled lasses want to cover them up, or find out how to make them disappear. This always baffles me, because I think freckles are beautiful! I saw this picture of America Ferrera and thought, "Wow, she makes freckles look really sophisticated."

If you have freckles, you've probably been conditioned to cover them up. But I think letting them show is a more contemporary and individualistic look. And it doesn't necessarily have to be a "cute" one, either; in this photo, America looks like a fresh-faced young woman, not a little girl. First of all, freckles are not a skin disorder. They're small spots of melanin that usually show up on fair complexions, though they can also appear on darker skin tones as well. Although having freckles is a genetic trait, sun exposure can cause the spots to darken or multiply. If you have freckles, wearing sunscreen every day is imperative, because people with freckles are more susceptible to the sun's rays. Additionally, if you aren't crazy about your freckles, a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 will help them from multiplying.

If you really, really hate your freckles-and I hope you don't!-there are some removal options. A dermatologist can prescribe topical lotions (such as Retin-A) that speed up the process of skin cell renewal, which will minimize the look of freckles. Intensed pulsed light (IPL) treatments, available at med spas, also work to even out skin tone, but they're expensive.

If you do love your freckles, here's how to work with them. In the past, makeup artists used heavy foundation and concealer to cover up freckles. Today, though, this looks dated. A more modern approach is to take a cue from America here, who's wearing a sheer foundation. This evens out her skin tone, but still lets a smattering of freckles show through. If you do have any spots that need to be covered, consider using a mineral foundation such as Neutrogena Mineral Sheers. Because mineral makeup reflects light, it keeps skin from looking flat and cakey like some heavier liquid and stick foundations can. Overall, work with-not against-the gorgeous freckles you've been given!

Kids (and sometimes adults) can be so cruel. In fact, Julianne Moore even wrote two books in regards to her childhood nickname, Freckleface Strawberry, which she despised. As for me, I didn't really have a nickname growing up, other than simple variations of my first name. But of course, there were a select few who had to badger me about those freckles: freckle face, freckle juice, or simply a very pre-Sawyeresque "freckles," were all the norm. What about you? Whether you were a red-headed "carrot top," a light-haired "blondie," or a spectacle-wearing "four-eyes," did you have - or do you currently have - a nickname based on a beauty feature?

Make Your Halloween Makeup Stay The Night

With the wrong Halloween makeup, your cheerleader costume can become a zombie cheerleader costume by the end of the night. Makeup that stays put is imperative in pulling off the ultimate costume. Here are some tips to help your getup last the night.

Makeup stays longer on hydrated skin. Be sure not to slack on your moisturizer and eye cream.
Use professional stage makeup. "Usually over-the-counter makeup lines are called washable cream makeup, and they will smear and rub off," says Dominic Cruz, Education Director at Kryolan. If you don't have access to cake makeup, he recommends setting your look with powder or Kryolan Fixing Spray.
Choose a long-wearing or waterproof concealer, like Maybelline Cover Stick Waterproof Concealer.
Use an eye shadow base or primer, like L‘Oreal De-Crease Eyeshadow base.
Curl lashes, and use a waterproof mascara if your costume includes it. If you need to wear false lashes, bring extras and glue with you. If you need to wear colored mascara and can’t find one, try Benefit She Laq, which comes with a mascara wand applicator.
If your disguise requires flushed cheeks, layer more than one kind of blush (mousse, powder, gel, stain) to make the color last longer.
Use long-wearing eye pencil on brows instead of brow pencil. Also use it for fake moles or freckles (that means you, Marilyn).
If you need to create the illusion of big lips, use concealer all over your lips before applying either liner or lip stain and then lipstick. If you need to tweak the shape, use a reverse lip liner.

2009 Primetime Emmy Awards: Chandra Wilson

Grey's Anatomy star Chandra Wilson looked adorably happy on the red carpet of the Emmys. She should, since she's nominated twice tonight: first for her role on Grey's and also for her role in Accidental Friendship. Her (potentially) winning glow is coming through her luminous makeup, which highlights her gorgeous freckles and stunning smile. Additionally, she wore her eyeshadow dark - to complement her black dress - and her hair big. I think it all works for Chandra. Are you digging this style, or is a little too Grey for your taste?

Six Risk Factors That Increase Your Chance of Developing a Melanoma

Have you ever had a sunburn so extreme that it blistered? Take caution. You could be at least three times more likely to develop a melonoma. A recent study, conducted by the melanoma screening service MoleMap by Dermatologists, identified six risk factors that could pose possible warning signs. Here they are:

Natural red or blond hair.
Freckling located on the upper back area.
A history of melanoma within your family.
Teenage sunburns that resulted in blisters.
Summer jobs outdoors that lasted for three or more years during your teenage years.
Tendency to get scaly patches of skin on areas of the skin that have received sun exposure.

If one of these statements is true for you, then you are three times more likely to develop a melanoma. However, you are 10 times more at risk if two or more of these circumstances apply to you. If you're concerned, heed the advice of MoleMap director Dr. Martin Haskett. "It is important to note that although most of the questions in the survey related to sun exposure, once the risk factors are present a malanoma can appear at any time of year and in non sun-exposed body sites," he says. "This means people need to check their skin year-round and medical surveillance programs for those at highest risk."
