When you think of Mardi Gras, beads and parades may come to mind, but the holiday is a big deal in lots of places oceans away from New Orleans. In other places, the lead up to Mardi Gras is known as Carnival, so the worldwide celebrations from Rio to Venice are actually the same party. Whatever you call it, though, this week is the world's time for some of the most fabulous makeup, hair, and costuming you'll see all year.

2010 will be upon us in just a few days, and with it we'll say hello to a new decade that's sure to be full of just as many beauty innovations as this one was. To get things started off right, I'm resolving to take better care of my skin and to find (or invent, if I have to) an undereye concealer that really covers. I know I may not make too much leeway with either of my goals, but I think it's never bad to make guidelines for yourself.

It's the day after Christmas — a perfect time to reflect upon all of the happenings of 2009. It's also the perfect time to look under the tree and admire all the new goodies your loved ones gifted to you. Did you receive any beauty spoils this year, be it a celebrity fragrance or a daring red lipstick?

After all of the anticipation, the big day is finally here. Did you get any lumps of charcoal in your stocking — hopefully of the charcoal shadow or liner nature? Regrettably, I have already taken down the tree in my apartment, as one particularly excited kitty couldn't seem to handle all of the fun "toys," aka ornaments, dangling right there just waiting to be messed with.

Last weekend, I smelled Oscar by Oscar De La Renta ($58) while walking through a lot full of Christmas trees and stopped in my tracks because I got such a powerful image of my mother hanging ornaments. My mother has always worn Oscar, and for me, the scent of her perfume's drydown intermingled with the aroma of pine sap is the quintessence of late December, when my childhood home was full of both scents. It's the season of memory, and scent recollection is one of the strongest and most visceral manifestations of it, so it's no wonder that Winter is a time associated with smells, whether it's stuffing fresh out of the oven or something utterly personal, like that moment I had.

There's a good chance that you've been spending more time with relatives lately, and with family gatherings often come alterations in the way we conduct ourselves. Especially with outward appearances, people have a tendency to self-edit when they're around Eagle-Eyed Grandpa or Judgmental Aunt Margaux —I know I do. Days with family can be a time to relax out of the lengthy beauty routine we follow the rest of the year, or a chance to look our prim and proper best.
