A UFO Lands in the World of Fragrance

. . . that's Unidentified Fragrance Objects, in case you were wondering. Known for its distinctive, modern bottles and contemporary take on fragrances, Kenzo recently commissioned designer Ron Arad to fabricate the bottle concept for its limited-edition Unidentified Fragrance Object Eau de Parfum ($188).

This is no ordinary fragrance. At its heart lies a marble (!) accord with four natural notes: orange blossom and Bulgarian rose for feminine touches, frankincense to intensify the marble, and vanilla to lend a sensual tone.

A metal alloy called Zamac makes up its outer shell, and an internal spray mechanism lies within. Only 1,000 units are available for purchase, and from now until Oct. 19, the bottle will be on display at the Museum of Modern Art as part of a retrospective of Arad's works. Coming Soon: Kenzo Amour Indian Holi

Even if you aren't a huge fan of past Kenzo fragrances, you have to hand it to them for always coming up with unique bottles and interesting scents. This February, a limited-edition fragrance called Kenzo Amour Indian Holi to coincide with this Spring's Holi, the Indian festival of colors.

The base of the fragrance is Amour, but this version has a few modifications. For example, there is less vanilla and more notes of peony, rose, frangipani, thanaka wood, and incense.

The eau de parfum will be available in a 50ml sized bottle. I haven't had the chance to smell it, but I really like the inspiration. This is something I'll definitely be checking out.

Oh Man: Tokyo by Kenzo

Kenzo Parfums has a new spicy fragrance for guys called Tokyo by Kenzo. The inspiration behind it was the colorful neon lights in the hyperactive metropolis of Tokyo.

The ingredients in the fragrance are meant to resemble the colors in the night skies. For example, the black buildings are reflective of nutmeg, clove, gaiac wood and cedar, the red lights are bitter orange and pink pepper, the trees are green tea, mate and shiso and the yellow lamps are lemon, grapefruit and ginger.

The collection consists of two Eau de Toilette sprays; 3.4 oz ($65), and 1.7 oz ($50) as well as a deodorant ($18).

Coming Soon: Kenzo Ryoko Perfume Pocket Pebbles

New from Kenzo is a collection of four different Ryokos. These pocket-sized pebbles each house one of their best selling fragrances: FlowerbyKenzo, SummerbyKenzo, L'eau Par Kenzo Pour Femme (for women) and L'eau Par Kenzo Pour Homme (for men). Designer Karim Rashid and Kenzo Creative Director Patrick Guedj wanted to join art, design and pop culture, and the packaging does the trick. The pebbles are really adorable and they fit right into the palm of your hand.

Not only does this invention make travel easier, but you can leave one in your car, your purse, your desk, at the gym, wherever you like! Consider them your portable fragrance in a cute new package (hence the name Ryoko, which means travel in Japanese). The Ryoko Pocket Pebbles will be available exclusively online this August for $25 each. Not a bad price for a piece of art, I say!

KenzoAmour is Both Perfume and Art

KenzoAmour, $85 is a sensual, woody and floral Asian inspired fragrance. It is reminiscent of love, the desire to travel to Japan, India and South East Asia, the beautiful curves of a woman and the orange, white and fuchsia colors of an abstract 'artsy looking' bird.

The scent is very soft and seductive smelling. It is made from: frangipani blossoms, Borobudur cherry blossoms, thanaka wood, incense, rice steam, vanilla and white tea.

The bottle is intended to look like an artistic abstract bird and the box depicts this bird flying in the air. KenzoAmour is available in a 3.4 oz. orange bottle for $85, a 1.7 oz. white bottle for $65 and a 1 oz. fuchsia bottle for $48.

The Calming Scent of Flowers by Kenzo

FlowerbyKenzo Summer Fragrance, $52 is a new limited edition Summer 2007 fragrance. It has a soft, powdery, fresh floral essence that is a fabulous way to spring into the sunny rays of summertime! It is alcohol free and has a silky texture which is great for the heat of the season when you want to feel light and refreshed instead of oily and weighed down.

It is made from: vanilla, Bulgarian rose, citrus fruits, bergamot, wild hawthorne, Parma violet, cassia, hedione, cyclosal, opoponax and white musk.

The bottle is pretty too. The long thin angular glass has fuchsia triangles, ripples of red ribbons, and swirls of orange running around in the form of a poppy - the original flower on the bottle. It is available in one size; a 1.7 oz bottle for $52.

You May Dye Your Hair "Green" in the Future

Bottle blondes have some promising news: A new hair bleach may be on the way, and it will be gentler for both people and planet. Japanese scientists are on their way to creating an eco-friendly hair bleach whose, uh, roots are in fungus. An enzyme from a strain of forest fungus naturally breaks down melanin, the substance that gives hair its color. Compared to bleaching with hydrogen peroxide, the enzyme would probably be easier on hair and skin.

Right now, researchers are still pretty far from turning theories into a product. More studies are required. "Although I expect [the enzyme] can degrade melanin by its oxidation, we don’t know the mechanism of the reaction," Dr. Kenzo Koike explained at a meeting of the American Chemical Society. "We should examine it and test it more and more." If all goes well, going lighter might become a much easier process in the near future.
