The Simple Trick To Keep Lipstick Off Your Teeth

Quick, alert Buffy and Giles! Looks like there's a possible blonde vampire on the loose, with suspicious red marks on her teeth and a habit of going out every single night-

Oh, wait. It's just Paris Hilton with lipstick on her teeth. The socialite has been using brighter lip colors than usual, but it looks like she's still figuring out how to keep the lipstick from migrating. It happens to everyone, I guess.

Fortunately, there's a very easy way to avoid this awkwardness, and I use it whenever I wear red lipstick. After applying the lipstick, wash your hands and put your index finger directly into your mouth. Close your mouth around it, and pull out your finger. Doing so transfers the excess color to your finger, not your teeth. Of course, it doesn't hurt to check in the mirror before going out, but this simple move should do the trick!

The Best Spray Tan on the Internet: Picnik's New Touch Up Suite

Picnik is a cool program for editing and aggregating photos online, especially if you don't have a copy of Photoshop handy. But recently, they introduced a lady-geared suite of features called Touch Up that has options like Sunless Tan, Highlights, Teeth Whitener, Blemish Fix, and my least favorite, Insta-Thin. (Because, you know, we girls always want to be thin.)

I decided to try it because I find the whole photo-editing thing dubious; I understand that this stuff's an accepted part of our culture, but I'm just saying that I don't think it's so great for our psyches to worry about "perfection." To find out what my experience was like, just read more

A Tale of Two Toothbrushes

Yes! Daneen at Spoiled Pretty has said what I've been thinking all along: Colgate's new Wisp product is an environmental fail. Wisp is a wee single-use cleaner that has a pre-soaked scrubber on one end and a pointy pick on the other. It's about the size of a lipstick, so the idea is to tote it with you and whip it out whenever spinach-teeth becomes a threat.

Unfortunately, Wisp can't be recycled or even re-used. So every time you unwrap one and use it that little Wisp will head off to a landfill. I'm all for convenience, but not at the expense of being environmentally sensitive. Disposable stuff is so passé. So instead, I tote this Preserve toothbrush, which is made from recycled yogurt cups. It comes in a tube, so I can toss it in my bag and go. And when the toothbrush wears out, Preserve will recycle both the brush and tube into plastic lumber that can be used in parks. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Five Ways Q-tips Can Save Your Beautiful Day

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a . . . Q-tip? Now since my makeup application with this product didn't go quite so smoothly, I decided to focus on ways this little swab can swipe all your problems away. (Well, maybe not all of them, but quite a few.)

Stop nail polish from sealing shut. One of my favorite tricks is to dip a Q-tip in vegetable oil and do a once-over on the rims of my nail polish bottles. The oil coats the top and prevents the polish from stopping my painting plan by sticking the tops on tight.

Prevent lip color from bleeding. To achieve a polished look that lasts, dip the cotton swabs in translucent powder and apply it along the outer edge of the lips, helping to keep the lipstick where it belongs . . . on your lips. You can even dab lipstick from your teeth with these, too.
Correct minor makeup flaws. Q-tips dipped in makeup remover can help fix a mascara smudge, eyeliner that's turns out a bit too smoky, or shadow that's all out of line. Similarly, dipping a swab in polish remover can correct a small error without putting your other painted fingers at risk.
Conceal blemishes without fingers. Pimple? No problem. Dip a tip into liquid concealer or the concentrated liquid makeup along the rim of a foundation bottle and dab over the affected area. This keeps your dirty fingers off your face and your fingers clean, too.
Mix your own makeup with leftovers. Got just a stump of lipstick that you can't quite get onto your lips? Instead of tossing, remove the cotton swab and dip the tip into the tube to get the excess out. If you're feeling extra DIY, you can dig out several shades, mix them together, and add some gloss to a leftover jar all with this stick for a custom creation.

Would You Tell Someone if She Had Makeup on Her Teeth?

Telling someone that they have lipstick on their teeth is similar to telling them they have food caught in their teeth. It's embarrassing to point out, but if it happened to you, wouldn't you hope that someone would speak up and spare you the humiliation of figuring it out on your own later? If you spotted someone with lipstick on her teeth, would you talk to her about it?

Go Beyond Brown and Black With a Colorful Eyeliner

It seems to me that the majority of makeup wearers opt for the fairly standard hues of brown or black. Pretty, but a bit boring, nonetheless. For New Year's Eve I went bold with a bright blue liner, and this got me to thinking about the rainbow of colors available beyond traditional shades.

While reds, oranges, and yellows are often saved for the runway or high fashion/high drama looks, here are some tips on how to wear shades on the cooler end of the spectrum:

Bold blue: We know that blue-based red lipsticks can help neutralize the yellow cast in teeth, and did you know that blue eyeliner can help make your eyes pop? Who wouldn't want a little twinkle, eh? Recently, I chose a deeper hue for a sophisticated look with a richer contrast, applying Wet 'n' Wild Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in Deep Blue ($1.49) to the waterline of both my upper and lower lash lines. After smudging and setting with a navy shadow, I was off for evening cocktails. My friend said I looked well-rested. Wink wink.

White: Apply white liner to the inner v and lower waterline to open eyes and brighten. Try Shu Uemura Eye Light Pencil White ($18), which has a white matte shade on one side and a pearl shade on the other.
Go green: To make hazel or green eyes pop, try an emerald green shade like Tarte EmphasEyes High Definition Eye Pencil in Green ($18).
Purple power: If you have deep brown, green, or hazel eyes, a purplish shade of liner will make them stand out even more. Apply L'Oreal Le Kohl Eyeliner in Le Plum ($7.95) and watch your eyes light up.

How-To: Choose a Cool-Toned Red Lipstick

With the holidays coming up, you want to look festive. My advice? Ditch the reindeer sweater and wear red lipstick instead. As a general guideline, you'll look best wearing this bold hue if you figure out the undertones in your skin to help guide you along the way.

If you're cool-toned, you probably look better in silver jewelry and certain reds. Take a look at some of my tips below:

When choosing for a cool-toned red, look for blue-based reds. Names like garnet, berry, cherry, and wine often suggest cooler shades.
Yellow teeth? Cool-toned reds will help neutralize the dinginess. Go ahead, have another glass of red wine.
Are you a brunette, a flaming bright redhead, or a platinum blonde? Chances are that bluish-reds will look great on you. Also, deeper skin tones look great in these shades.

Makeup Artist Bruce Grayson Gives Us an Emmys Preview

As head of the makeup department for the Primetime Emmy Awards and Academy Awards telecasts, Bruce Grayson knows a thing or two about covering breakouts, adhering eyelashes, and keeping lipstick off teeth. "TV makeup is different because they are getting you from all angles and you are at the mercy of the lighting, as opposed to a still photo shoot where you control all that," he says. "[For television] they aren't lighting for you, they're lighting for the show."

Not only will he be working his magic on some of his celeb clients, who include Katie Holmes and Hayden Panettiere, Grayson oversees the team that takes care of the casts of the production numbers, the trophy girls, and some presenters. I got the chance to talk to him in the midst of his preparation for Sunday's show.

What do you think we'll see at this year's Emmys?
I think you’re going to see a lot of skin showing because it's September. I think sheerer lipsticks are taking the lead ahead of glosses; on HD, glosses can look too glossy. I think you’re going to see a lot of bronzers, a lot of false eyelashes, and really defined brows.

What is the key to good television makeup?
Less is more. I use a lot of tinted moisturizer, like Olay Definity Color Recapture, which blends into the skin really well and has a glow to it. Glow is like the third dimension for TV. You can create that with highlights and shadow, but a little glow works best with HDTV.

Shimmer can be tricky though, right?
Shimmer in the wrong place can bring out wrinkles. You have to be careful placing a shimmer shadow. If you want to do a really good shimmer eye with real accuracy and you're worried about wrinkles, it's best to use a bone shimmer eye shadow on the lid. Don’t carry it too far on the browbone, where it can get caught in the smile creases around the eye. Stick with a powder - those shimmer sticks are almost like cream sticks. They are going to grab skin, grab lines, and be a little more textured than the powder ones. If you use them, use a brush to apply.

What are the other secrets to red carpet makeup?
Primer underneath makeup. You know how you have that one area of your face where makeup doesn’t want to adhere? Use it there, on the problematic areas. It will adhere to the makeup and give it more lasting power. You can’t control light on the red carpet, you are stuck with whatever and however you’re going to pose and how they got the shot. You want to be simple with eyeshadow, no complicated smoky eyes, simplistic things.

What do you do to touch someone up on the fly?
You have to be good at makeup, it’s all in being pro. You get one chance, and live TV can be the most terrifying of all media! Brow gel, lips - you want to do that checklist. If I travel with a celebrity, I take a look at them and say, "Smile at me, left, right, OK, stop. That’s where you need to powder, that’s where you need to touch up." I like Clean & Clear blotting papers and the ones made by MAC. I usually wrap them around a powder puff or a sponge. That will blot excess shine but leave a glow.

Do celebrities carry their own makeup in their purses on the red carpet?
Blotting papers, translucent powder, lip gloss, and lip liner. My team is on hand and watching for touch-ups. You can’t carry much in a cocktail bag!
