Trend Alert: Nude, Matte Lips at the Emmys

On the red carpet last night, tons of celebrities played down their makeup, especially lips. As usual, there were lots of soft pinks and shimmers, but the dominant trend was nude, matte lips. Whether part of an understated look designed to let a dress or jewelry shine through, like Ginnifer Goodwin and Kristin Chenoweth, or as a soft foil to dramatic eyes, like Kim Kardashian and Mila Kunis, the matte lip is a sexy, subtle way to keep a dramatic look from being overdone. 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards: Mila Kunis

Mila Kunis usually looks like the girl next door, but tonight she had a serious case of sexyface. The waterlined eyes and nude lip are classic sexpot, but instead of the bedhead you'd expect with this kind of look, she substituted an elegant, deeply side-parted ponytail. It's good to try something new once in a while, but do you think this look fits together well on the red carpet, or should Mila go back to her usual, more natural makeup and let-down hair?

How-To: Wearing Makeup For Differently Hued Eyes

The other day I was chatting with a friend, and I noticed that one of her eyes was a bright bluish-green and the other was a bright greenish-blue - a subtle but noticeable difference. So cool. Having two completely different eye colors is called complete heterochromia, and there are other variations, such as sectoral heterochromia, where the iris may be one color with distinctive hues within. Check out some of my tips below for accentuating different colored eyes, along with some pictures of stars who have multihued eyes after the jump.

Control the intensity: You can create a cohesive look with eye shadow palettes in the same color families, but with varying degrees of lightness and darkness to create a balanced effect. The key is to blend and control the intensity, focusing on a cohesive color palette, as opposed to trying to apply makeup to each eye in completely different colors. Try Pop Beauty Lid Silver Eye Shadow Palette ($22) or Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Shadow and Liner ($10).
Go bright: Don't be afraid to experiment. Check out Kate Bosworth's choice of bold green in the gallery below, where the eye shadow is the star of her daring look.
Get heavy handed: Doing a smoky eye like Mila Kunis (see below) puts the emphasis on her stunning eyes, not away from them.
Colored contacts: A slightly obvious choice, but a perfect solution for times when you might want to experiment with matching peepers.
Don't hide it: Keep in mind that there is no right or wrong makeup when it comes to heterochromia. In actuality, you probably don't have to adjust much, if anything at all. It's such a rare and stunning feature to have; who'd ever want to really hide it?

How-To: Mila Kunis's Rockin' VH1 Makeup

Saturday night at the 2008 VH1 Rock Honors, Mila Kunis donned a soft, wavy two-toned updo, dark and sexy seductive smoky eyes and icy cool lips. I love this modern dressy makeup look and Miss Mila has just the right amount of mojo to pull it off.

This intricate look is easy to achieve. All you need are a few quality brushes and the right colors. If you're interested in both the product and technique suggestions to create Mila's makeup at home, read more.

FACE: The first step in creating flawless, pale skin is making sure that your face is well hydrated. Apply a moisturizer to your face and neck and then apply an eye cream to your orbital bone. Next, smooth creamy foundation such as Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Matifying Foundation in Ivory all over, and dab concealer around any red or blue areas. Then, apply a translucent powder to set the base.
CHEEKS: Using an angled, contour blush brush, apply a mocha powder blush such as Clinique Blushing Blush Powder Blush in Mysterious Mocha to the bottom half of your cheekbones and sweep upwards and outwards towards your ear. Then, use what's leftover on the brush on your temples and chin to create symmetry. Don't overdo it, a little blush goes a long way.
EYES: First and foremost, you need to fill in your brows. Apply a pencil or a gel to add structure to your face. The, apply a bone-colored shadow all of the lid. Blend a deep sable-taupe in the crease and a lighter, pale pink above and below the crease. For this look Shiseido's The Makeup Silky Eye Shadow Duo in Warm Tearose is the perfect powder shadow combo. Next, use a creamy black eyeliner pencil along the top lash line and the inner rims of your eyes. Dab the inner v with a touch of sparkling, white highlighter and apply two coats of jet-black mascara. As a finishing touch, sweep the pink shadow underneath your eyeliner on your lower lids to make your eyes really pop!
LIPS: Using a lip brush, apply a creamy lipstick like Victoria's Secret Makeup Very Sexy Perfect Lipstick in Whisper to your lips. This pale neutral with a little bit of shimmer is Karolina Kurkova's favorite.

How To: Mila Kunis's TRL Makeup

The first thing that came to mind when I saw these pictures of Mila Kunis at TRL this week? Smokin' hot. Seriously, this girl has amazing skin and features (OK, and a professional hair and makeup team as well). The dramatic eyes, rosy cheeks, and lips are all working for me, so I thought I would share some tips for you all about how to get a look like Mila's at home!

Face: Start with clean, moisturized skin, and use a primer to ensure a smooth foundation application. Lately I've been into MAC Prep & Prime Face Protect SPF 50 ($26.50). Apply a creamy concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone on the under-eye area and eyelids, such as Estée Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme Ultra Firming Concealer ($19.50) in Light. Mila is wearing a full-coverage foundation such as Bobbi Brown Oil-Free Even Finish Foundation SPF 15 ($40) in Warm Beige. Use a sponge applicator with a tapered tip to get the most even application, and be sure to blend down below the chin.
Eyes: The eyes are the centerpiece of this look. Start off with a wash of light beige, shimmery shadow over the entire lid and into the corner of the eye. Try Urban Decay Eyeshadow ($16) in Midnight Cowgirl. Add depth and definition by using a darker, highlighting shade on the outer third of your lid, like this Smashbox Eye Shadow ($16) in Rapture. Using a black liquid liner such as L'Oreal Carbon Black Telescopic Precision Liquid Eyeliner ($9) in Carbon Black, line eyes fully, including the inner rims. To create a lightly smoky effect, take a black eyeliner pencil like Max Factor MaxEye Eyeliner ($6) in Night Club, and smudge it over the liquid liner on outer corners of your upper and lower eye. Blend lightly with a finger or Q-Tip. To get flirty, long lashes like Mila, try a pair of falsies like this feathery pair from Laura Mercier.
Cheeks: A deep, rosy shade of blush like Make Up For Ever Powder Blush ($18) in Antique Pink suits Mila's complexion perfectly. To create the illusion of high cheekbones, try starting just past, rather than right on, the apples of your cheeks and sweeping upwards to the temples.
Lips: Mila's lips look close to her natural color, but just a bit deeper. A creamy lipstick in a rosy pink shade, like this Revlon SuperLustrous ($7) in Pink Velvet, should do just the trick.
