Should Guyliner Be Banned?

At the end of last month, a 13-year old boy was told by school officials in Hamilton, OH that he needed to remove his black lipstick and eye liner because his makeup was "extreme and distracting." The boy, Matt, didn't see it that way, saying, "I don't find this distracting at all." His mom felt that the school system was being discriminatory. But administrators claimed that the same rules apply for girls wearing excessive makeup. Do you think the school was right in singling him out? Or should Matt be able to flaunt his WentzPentz with pride?

Whose Male Rocker Makeup Do You Like Most?

Punk, glam, and goth hit their peak decades ago, but a few rocker dudes still sport makeup today. There's Gerard Way from the band My Chemical Romance, who has worn everything from black to purple to red eye makeup. Then there's Pete Wentz who loves guyliner so much that he created his own line of makeup (kidding - sheesh)! Last but not least is former teen heartthrob Jared Leto, who wears creamy metallic eyeshadow, liner, mascara, and even stripes of bright-pink lipstick on his cheeks.

These guys have a style that's all their own, but I gotta say, it reminds me of angsty dudes I knew in high school - so it isn't exactly the sexiest look to me personally. Out of these three rebel rockers, who do you think pulls the look off best?

Beauty Byte: Pete Wentz to Launch Makeup Line

Who would have thought that emo heartthrob Pete Wentz would become such a beauty-industry mogul? He's already announced his plan to open a salon in Chicago, and now the king of guyliner is branching out into cosmetics. He's about to launch a collection of five vegan, punk-themed pencil eyeliners called WentzPentz. Pete said:

"Fall Out Boy has always been known for its pop hooks and good looks, and like David Bowie before me, I am known for my displays of cosmetic derring-do. For too long, I've been keeping my eyeliner know-how to myself. Now, with the debut of WentzPentz, guys - and girls - everywhere will be able to have a piece of the Fall Out Boy lifestyle."

Sold individually, WentzPentz eyeliners will retail for $3.99 each at Hot Topic. They'll be available in five shades, each inspired by Pete's childhood in the Chicago area:

In addition, Pete plans to partner with Ken Paves to design his own line of clip-on hair extensions for men. "Jess [Simpson] has had great success with hers," he said. "I hope to get Hair Dude up and running by late 2008."

Update: Since Pete's "makeup collection" is amazingly being reported as fact by the Chicago RedEye and other publications, now seems a good time to emphasize that this was an April Fool's Joke. (Click the "he said" link above.)

Beauty Byte: Pete Wentz Is Really Into Hair

Ashlee Simpson's red hair has earned her fair share of attention, but it's her boyfriend Pete Wentz who's leaping into the salon business. The guyliner king is opening his own salon in Chicago.

Like his casual clothing line, the punk-themed space will be called Clandestine Industries. Lead stylist Ben Mollin, who you might remember from his stint on Shear Genius, will deliver hipster cuts for men and women. No word on whether we can expect to hear lots of Fall Out Boy or Pete's old band on the stereo system, but I imagine the mall-punk brigade is going nuts right now.

What do you do after you've written for ELLEgirl, Teen Vogue, Teen People, and Glamour? If you're Anne Ichikawa and Melissa Walker, you start your own online publication. I Heart Daily features news on style, beauty, entertainment, and all-around cool stuff. It's meant for teenagers, but you'll like it if you're merely young at heart.

Ichikawa and Walker recently shared their thoughts on why youth culture fascinates them, how Pete Wentz is influencing style, and how to help teenage girls develop a healthy self-image. Read on!

You've both written for teenagers for years. What is it about them that grabs you?
MELISSA: They're so open and honest. Teenagers are going through really high highs and really low lows, and there's something universal about those emotions and the raw excitement of discovering new things to love. They care about what they're reading about-and they're not afraid to tell you when the loooooove something or when they think something sucks. I appreciate that.
ANNE: Teens are still forming their opinions about things, their taste and what they like. Because of that they’re more excited and open to discover what’s out there, whether that’s a new band or a new kind of lip gloss. I mean, my mom has used the same Maybelline eyeliner for the past 20 years in the same exact shade! They have a sense of passion that us jaded adults lose after a while. Haha.

Do you think it's easier to be a teenager now than it was, say, 10 years ago? Or harder?
MELISSA: I think it's harder in some ways and easier than others. Seriously, the experience of that age is so universal that I think it all evens out and ends up just being a tough-and-amazing time no matter WHEN you go through it.
ANNE: I agree with Melissa - being a teenager is pretty universal throughout the ages. Sure, now there’s Facebook and MySpace, but you know, at some point TV sets and cordless phones also were new and crazy.

How have teenagers' attitudes toward their appearance changed since you were that age?
MELISSA: I think they have more access to celebrity style and beauty, plus quick-and-easy ways to get the exact products they see celebs using, so there might be a bit more experimentation. But the truth is that teenagers are always trying to find their personal style, and now they can just try on more identities, which is fun.
ANNE: I think it’s a little more accepted and cool to be different now. Being quirky and an individual is a good thing now-that’s partly due to the media. Who ever thought wearing huge nerd glasses (American Apparel style) and guys wearing black eyeliner (Pete Wentz) would ever become mainstream and hip?

For those of us with teenage nieces and sisters, what's the best advice we can give with regard to building their self-image?
MELISSA: Nurture individuality and encourage their passions. There's so much possibility to explore at that age, and the "eh, that's not realistic" line is one of the lamest ones older people pull. Encourage them to dream big-then their identities are defined by how much they rock the world, not how much they weigh.
ANNE: To be comfortable in your own skin. I know, I know…easier said than done, but it’s true! It’s so important to encourage young women to be curious, kind, intelligent and, most of all, to follow their passions. Focus on building a strong sense of self, and the confidence will follow.

So anyway, I was just fiercely hangin' at an auto show, when my friend Bella took a look at my hair. 'Christian,' she said to me, 'Between you and Pete Wentz, I think there may be a new hair trend for skinny, pale punk-ish boys.' I so concur, because I am a trendsetter. Armed with our flat irons and hair spray, Pete and I shall out-fierce everyone else in a may-jah way. But Bella wants to know what you think of this look on guys. Is the flat-ironed look something you hope catches on with men? Or is it a hot tranny mess?"

The next night, she showed up to the CosmoGirl Born to Lead Awards in New York City wearing barely-there buff-colored lipstick. Men in Makeup: Hot Trend, or Just a Vague Possibility?

Today's edition of Salon has a thought-provoking story about men who wear makeup. Using Zac Efron's deeply bronzed face as a launchpad, the story discusses the makeup use of other "pretty boys" such as John Mayer, Ryan Seacrest and Pete Wentz.

But just because a few male celebrities are wearing makeup, does that mean that your average Joe will follow suit? Salon uncovers a kernel of possibility when examining the international trend:

If foreign markets are any indication, we may be slathering on foundation soon enough. The U.K. drugstore giant Boots has started carrying a men's makeup line, and H&M in London stocks mascara in its men's section. In Asia, Japan's Gatsby line of men's makeup and South Korea's Man Holding Flower line by Somang featuring "Color Lotion" are doing brisk business.

I've already talked about the preference for pretty in Japan, and Clinique includes a bronzer and concealer in its men's grooming line. (It sells better in Europe than in the States.) Despite these signs of change on an international level, most American guys aren't yet ready to become a frequent shopper at Sephora. A 2005 GQ survey reported that "92 percent of men would not wear makeup even if it guaranteed them a more fulfilling sex life." (And if a little hotsy-totsy won't motivate them, then I don't know what will.)

Most guys I know are more interested in being well-groomed than they were five years ago, but I think it'll be a loooong time until the average dude is powdering his nose-if that ever happens. (Gender roles, anyone?) So I'm curious: Do you think we'll ever see the day when most guys wear makeup on a regular basis? Are younger guys more open to the idea? And why, oh, why, does Zac use such a heavy hand with his bronzer?
