A Few Tips for Red Lips

Red lips are having a moment right now, but a classic red lip never really goes out of style. I used to be intimidated by wearing them, but now they're in regular rotation-and they're especially festive for this time of year.

So when Molly R. Stern offered some tips on creating the perfect red lip, I jumped at the chance to share them with you. Molly is CoverGirl's celebrity makeup artist, and she's touched the faces of celebrities such as Ellen Barkin, Heather Graham, Renee Zellweger and Kirsten Dunst.

Focus on one thing. "This look is all about the red lip," Molly says. "So keep the rest of your look simple with sheer coverage; let your natural skin tones shine through."
There really is a red for everyone. Molly recommends CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Lipcolor in Ever Red-dy. "I also love CoverGirl TruShine Lipcolor in Cranberry Shine," she says, "because it goes on sheer and has blue undertones, which will complement any skin tone." (Blue undertones also help to make teeth look whiter.)
Make your lips pop. To add a rosy glow, apply a cream blush on the apples of your cheeks.
Go easy on the eyes. A lengthening mascara in black-brown or brown will give your eye subtle definition and keep the focus on your luscious red lips, Molly says.

I'd also add that the key to wearing red lips is confidence. If you think you can pull it off, you can.

The typically demure Diane Kruger wore this season's red "it" lip to Condé Nast Movies Rock. With her perfect skin, sparkling smile and bright eyes, I think she pulled it off beautifully. I also happen to really like her pale pink lips at the GQ Turns 50 celebration party as well as her natural and shiny coral-colored lipstick from the 64th Venice Film Festival. I can't decide what shade of lipstick I like best on her. Can you?

Right now we all know that red is in the air....so get yourself red hot for the holidays! These glosses make a more subtle statement than red lipsticks because they are more sheer.

Dior Addict Plastic Gloss in Electrifying Red, $23.50, is a beautiful and brilliant gloss that doesn't hint around the fact that it's red. Though Christina Aguilera is best known for this look, a number of young Hollywood celebs, including Lindsay Lohan, are wearing these very adult lips. Earlier today, I told you about five of my picks for the best red lipsticks, but before you rush out and buy one, keep in mind that wearing this shade right can be tricky. Here are some helpful tips for choosing the right shade and applying it just right.

Step 1: Choosing the Right Shade

If you have a warm olive or dark skin-tone, you will want to look for a shade of red with orange or coral undertones. For those of you with cool (fair) skin-tone, you will want to look for a shade of red with blue or pink undertones. Something to note, however, is that deep brick reds can be worn by almost anyone, because the brownish color is so neutralizing.

Step 2: Applying It Right

To get perfect red lips, start by lining them evenly with a lip liner and dotting concealer or powder around the edge of your lips, so that the color doesn't bleed. Also, it helps to powder your lips before applying the lipstick, which will help the effect last longer.
