2009 Primetime Emmy Awards: Christina Applegate

At last year's awards, Christina Applegate went for bold, red lips and va-voom hair, but this year, it's all about the soft touches. Instead of a tight, pulled-back bun, Christina's hair is styled in a loose, low-slung chignon, and her makeup, while heavy-handed for the camera's flashes, is peaches-and-cream all the way. She's up for an Emmy tonight for her work on the now defunct Samantha Who?, but when it comes to her beauty choices this evening, are you thinking, "Who's that girl?" or is it not her best look?

How-To: Christina Applegate's Makeup at the Golden Globe Awards

2008 was a tough year for Christina Applegate, who underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully, she's now cancer-free, and she's earning kudos for her performance on Samantha Who?. If you loved her red-carpet look, created by makeup artist Joanna Schlip, follow these steps to recreate it at home.

Skin: Before applying any makeup, Schlip applied The Moisturizing Lotion from La Mer on Christina's face to give her smooth, hydrated skin. Then, she used DiorSkin Pure Light foundation in Cameo, covering imperfections with Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen. After applying a self-tanner bronzer, she used Physicians Formula 100% Natural Origin 2-in-1 Bronzer and Blush in Bronzer/Ginger on the apples of Christina's cheeks. She set the makeup with La Mer The Mist. Christina's collarbone and shoulders glowed after an application of MAC Strobe Cream.

Eyes: On eyes, Schlip used Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips in Vegas Strip, a collection of shimmery light bronze shades. Use the lightest shade near the brow bone, and use the darker bronze in the crease of the eyelid. Line the upper lash line with a black felt-tip eyeliner, then apply a few coats of mascara. If necessary, define your brows with powder or pencil; Christina wore Dior Powder Brow Pencil in Blonde./LI>
Lips: First, line lips with a red liner. Use a lip brush to fill lips with a red lipstick; Christina wore Rouge Dior Replenishing Lipcolor in Red Premiere. Follow with a bit of shimmery red gloss such as Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in 757.

Samantha Who? Tonight, it's all about Christina, that's who. She may play an amnesiac on her hit show, but tonight is a night I'm sure she soon won't forget. The cool, blue and purple tones of her dress and accessories are further accentuated by her deep red lips. Va voom on the hair - she keeps it smooth and classy. I'm so glad she's cancer-free and taking a few steps into the spotlight. What do you think of Christina's glamorous cool-toned style?

How often do you change your hairstyle?

Frequently. I'll go long to short and then get extensions if I miss my hair.

Not very often, I love my hair.

I usually wear it straight, but sometimes I'll curl it or wear it back.

I keep my hair short. It's easier to manage that way.

What are your thoughts on breast-lifting creams?

I'd try them, why not?

Do those really work? I don't think I'd try them.

I love them - I've got a cabinet full of different brands.

I've got one, but I don't think it does much.

Do you wear a lot of shimmery makeup?

Yes, bring it on, sister!

Shimmer is great as long as you choose one area to accentuate at a time.

I like a shimmery blush or an eye shadow but I'm not into shimmery lips.

I'm not a big fan of shimmer. I'll occasionally wear it on the eyes, but that's it.

Would you ever pencil in a beauty mark?

Absolutely, beauty marks are glamorous!

Sure, why not?

I'd do it on Halloween.

How-To: Christina Applegate's SAG Awards Hairstyle

For the 2008 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Samantha Who nominee Christina Applegate arrived on the red carpet looking very old Hollywood. Celebrity hair stylist Adir Abergel created her gorgeous sparkly side-swept chignon using all Fekkai products. Her makeup was pale and flawless with lined black eyes and red lips. Plus, her gown was so pretty that she made FabSugar's best-dressed list!

Step 1: Since creating texture is key to this kind of look, begin by applying Fekkai Coiff Shape and Set Mist all over the hair from roots to ends. Next, blow-dry hair and finger comb through.
Step 2: Then, take a one-inch barrel curling iron, and curl two-inch sections of your hair, choosing random pieces all over your head. You do not have to curl every hair, only about two-thirds (since you are trying to create an uneven texture).
Step 3: Rub a dime-size amount of Fekkai Coiff Nonchalant in your palms and gently rub it all over your hair. This will create a soft hold.
Step 4: Use your fingers to hand rake your hair into a low side ponytail. Secure with a hair elastic at the nape of your neck, leaving the ponytail loose and slightly messy. Lastly, twist your ponytail to create a messy chignon and secure with bobby pins. Then, mist your entire head with Fekkai Sheer Hold hair spray.

Beauty Blooper: Tales From a Tomato Face

Another Thursday, another Beauty Blooper! This one comes from an anonymous reader who was brave enough to share her story:

"Help me, BellaSugar! I went to the drugstore and purchased an over-the-counter chemical peel that left my face burning. My skin was very red and blotchy. The best analogy I can think of is that I resembled Samantha from the Sex and the City episode, "Plus One is The Loneliest Number." It's the one where she decides to get a chemical peel before Carrie's book launch.

"After three days, it started to heal but it was still very sensitive, and I wouldn't dream of going outside in the sun. I found that cold compresses and the gel from a natural aloe plant were very soothing, but nothing else seemed to help. One thing's for sure: I'm not getting a chemical peel again anytime soon, unless it's done by a professional."

Solution: If you haven't tried a strong treatment before, do a small patch test to see how your skin will react. If your face is burning, you can also try an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory cream such as Topricin (or really any anti-redness cream) since they contain calming agents.
