How to Create a Smoky Eye

If you're going out for a night on the town and you want to look your sexiest, the surest way to achieve that look through makeup is with a smoky eye. The standard smoky eye look is created using heavy black or dark charcoal colors, but now cosmetics companies are also creating deep hues of blues and purples to play up your eye color and really make you look irresistible. (Tune in later today to read about the best smoky eye kits.) Here's how to get the look.

Start by applying an eyeshadow primer to your entire eyelid, then sweep the lightest color in the palette all over your eye.
Next, apply a medium eyeshadow shade from your lash line to the crease of your eye and blend well.
Then, use your crease brush to gently apply the darkest to your crease. Again, blend well.

If desired, dab a light amount of sheer shimmer shadow to your brow bone.
Draw a thin line with your eyeliner very close to your lashes. For a smokier look, smudge the line, or leave it untouched for a more defined effect.
For a finishing touch, line the inner rims of you lower eyelid.
Finally, add two coats of black mascara to really smoke em' out.

Keep in mind that when you have a heavy eye, you'll want to aim for light, flawless skin with a touch of bronzer and pale blush. Also, be sure to downplay your lips by using a light, nude lip color.

Narciso Rodriguez Gives Us a Dirty Take on a Smoky Eye

Is there ever a case when a smudgy under eye actually looks OK? If the technique is left in the hands of famed makeup artist and Shiseido’s artistic director, Dick Page, then the answer is yes. At Narcisco Rodriguez's show, the models wore smudged eye makeup with minimal foundation. It was a look reminiscent of the popular smoky eye, but with the emphasis on warm, bronzy tones and a next-day quality. By pairing with a contrasting cool, flat mauve lip, the look was spared from a strung-out effect. To create a slightly glossy finish and a wet base, Page used a fluffy brush to apply makeup remover around the eyes. Next, he blended Shiseido Luminizing Satin Eye Color ($25 each) in Squirrel and Cavern, and applied all along the eyes, into the lash lines. To finish these "dirty looking eyes," he extended the color up into the lids. Most impressive? It's a completely mascara- and liner-free look. I can handle that.

Step 1: Smooth on the cream-to-powder base. This will help give the shadows staying power.
Step 2: Start with the lightest shadow and dust your entire lid, from lash line to brow bone with it.
Step 3: Next, take the medium shade and using a round shadow brush, apply it onto the lid, starting at the lash line and stopping just past the crease. Mally's tip: If you have a flat eyelid, continue past the crease and blend up.
Step 4: This time, use a flat shadow brush, take the darkest color and apply it all along your upper and lower lash lines. It's important to blend well to avoid any visible edges.
Step 5: Lastly, use the same dark color to line your upper lashes only.
