I owe any hair successes and failures from my college years to the Bumble and Bumble University's Model Project. I'd offer my hair up to stylists from around the country learning how to do updos using hair powder. Afterward, I'd roll into my Gender, Economics and the Media class with a full-on bouffant. The cuts and color I got were also usually amazing, and I have friends who go to the Aveda Institute for services. Have you ever left your 'do in the hands of a student?

Get a $5 Haircut, Help Stop Domestic Violence

Here's a silver lining to the dark cloud that is the economy: This Saturday, you can get a student haircut for just $5 - and your donation will raise money to help stop domestic abuse. Empire Education Group, a chain of cosmetology schools, is raising money for local women's shelters and for Cut It Out, an arm of the Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund nonprofit. All proceeds from hair, skin, and nail services - not just the $5 specials - will go to fund this cause. (Search for a location near you to buy the $5 haircut card in advance.)

Why are salons and beauty schools involved, you ask? It actually makes sense: Women often have a close relationship with their hairstylists, and stylists can offer a safe space to talk or reach out for help. If you need help, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 799-SAFE. If you want to help other women, join the RESPECT! group on TeamSugar, where we're working with the Family Violence Prevention Fund to stop abuse.

Anyone ever hear of Sun In? As a young college student without much money to spare, I thought this would be a great and inexpensive way to lighten my hair for summer! You spray the solution into your hair, sit outside and let the sun oxidize away. What I didnt realize is that brown hair turns orange before it becomes blonde... and that's exactly what happened to me. My virginal mousy brown hair was now an unpleasant shade of fire!

Needless to say, I had to get it professionally fixed and the ends of my hair started to fall out from all of the processing. Nice. Lesson learned: Next time, see a licensed hair stylist for any first-time dye jobs!
