Is the Supermodel Dead? And Should She Return?

Fashion Week starts tomorrow, and I'm excited to see some new faces on the runway. It's fun to spot top models such as Jessica Stam alongside up-and-comers like Hana Soukupova. For me, seeing the brand-new girls is one of the most exciting parts of any show.

Still, I know there are people who miss the era of the supermodel, when Naomi, Cindy, Linda and Christy dominated the runways and magazine covers. Claudia Schiffer recently said those days are over:

"In order to become a supermodel one must be on all the covers all over the world at the same time so that people can recognize the girls. That is, for now, not possible, not least because the advertising industry is very much taken nowadays by pop stars and actresses. Supermodels like we once were don't exist anymore."

She does have a point: Drew Barrymore is the new spokesmodel for Cover Girl, while Keira Knightley replaced Kate Moss as the face of Coco Mademoiselle. But is this necessarily a bad thing? Personally, I love Drew and would rather see such a smart, talented lady selling makeup than another pretty face. Does "Supermodel" Mean Anything Anymore?

We all know the supermodels by their first names: Naomi. Linda. Christy. Heidi. Gisele. Whitney.

Wait, Whitney? Yep, Whitney Thompson - as in the winner of America's Next Top Model. She's launching her own line of handmade jewelry and candles, calling it Supermodel. "I've tried to make my collection real," she told First Coast News. "It's stuff that I love and I would wear and I'm a supermodel so I was thinking, 'Hey! Supermodel.'"

While I love Top Model and hope that Whitney's endeavor goes well, none of the show's winners are exactly household names in the way that Cindy Crawford is. Then again, neither are the most popular runway models - just try asking a random dude who Jessica Stam or Raquel Zimmerman are. So maybe Claudia Schiffer is right when she says that the age of the supermodel is long over. If it is, do you think it matters?

Kate Moss has been at the center of the modeling world for 20 years, and we've seen her as the face of all sorts of brands, from the prestigious Gucci, Dior, and Louis Vuitton down to drugstore favorite, Rimmel. Recently, the supermodel, who admits she's "not traditionally a beauty" to WWD, has just launched Vintage ($23-$53), a fruity floriental inspired by her love of vintage fashions.

But as you might know, this isn't the first scent we've seen from Kate. Her debut fragrance, Kate, was introduced in 2007. Then came Velvet Hour, followed by the limited-edition Kate Summer Time; and she's not about to stop now. In fact, Kate also has plans to create special makeup collections for Rimmel, and a haircare line with stylist James Brown is in the works. "It’s fun for me," Moss told WWD. "I still model, and I enjoy doing that as well. Working on the creative process is really interesting for me because I do know what I like, so it’s fun for me to realize that it becomes part of you. Florence Griffith-Joyner, or Flo Jo, as most people know her, still holds the world record for the 100 and 200 meter dash 20 years after she last competed and 10 years after her untimely death at age 38. Although rumors of steroid use began to swirl after her stunning 1988 Olympic victories, and she retired only a year before steroid testing was to be implemented, the claims against her were never substantiated, and her records remain untarnished.

Besides being one of the fastest people ever to live, she was also a true beauty icon, an African-American woman with an athletic body and those signature long, perfect nails in a time when the first supermodels were emerging and the "right" look excluded most women of color and anyone who wasn't shaped like a very slender hourglass. She's a beloved figure for her sharp sense of style and work in the community, and she even had her own Barbie doll, outfitted in one of her awesomely '80s one-legged track unitards. Let's hope her records stand for a good, long time.

Ah, a day in the life of a hand model. It's all about no cooking, no cleaning, or performing excessive actions in an effort to protect the hands. Or, in certain cases, it's all about standing in when the actress's hands aren't available. Doesn't sound too bad, does it? While, yes, it's true that these "parts models," as they're known as in the biz, take extra precautions to keep their hands looking pristine, it's more than just looking pretty for the camera.

Take hand model Ashly Covington, for instance. "I moisturize 20 to 30 times a day, and wear gloves 90 percent of the time," she told CNN. "When it's your livelihood, you've got to think hands first," she added. Find out some more interesting facts regarding this uncommon profession.

Why Don't Supermodels Brush Their Hair?

I keep seeing pictures of models roaming the streets or attending events with disheveled hair. I can't understand why they don't take the time to brush it when beauty is their trade. I can understand why they go messy after getting primped day after day, and I don't expect anyone to look perfect all of the time. But some models consistently look sloppy. Why do you think this is?

The Met's Costume Institute Gala: Heidi Klum

Tonight's Costume Institute Gala is all about the models as muse, so it's no surprise to see Heidi Klum amongst the first to arrive - after all, the newly pregnant TV host, designer, and sometimes singer is one of the biggest supermodels in the world. Tonight, she decided to keep her beauty look rather simple, placing the focus, instead, on her Gilles Mendel gown and complementary earrings. But just because it was simple doesn't mean it wasn't stunning. Her makeup was luminescent thanks to the pale pink lips and cheeks. Also of note was her pulled back hair. It's hard to make Klum look anything but amazing, but I'm particularly smitten tonight. Are you?
