What We're Sweet On: The Lip Tint That Just Won't Quit

Tarte lip tint ($24) is by no means a new product, but it is one that definitely deserves some extra attention. These chubby little sticks are great lip moisturizers, and unlike most balms, you don't end up reapplying them constantly to keep your lips from drying out even more. The high pigment payoff and sheer formula also make the tint exceptional. The combination makes it so buildable that you can go from a sheer hint of color all the way up to a vintage crimson lipstick look with the same product.

There is, however, something you need to know if you want this product to work for you. The high pigmentation is a boon, but it also means that light and medium skin tones can't apply this the way you would a typical lip balm. So if you don't want a statement lip color, do one of two things: 1) get a lip brush and apply sparingly, or 2) instead of applying as you normally would, just lightly touch the stick to your lips a few times, then rub them together. It might feel a little weird at first, but it also means that one tint lasts three or four times longer than the average colored lip balm.

Tarte's True Blood Collection Does a Fang-Up Job

As an obsessive True Blood fan and similarly obsessive beauty editor, the new Tarte Cosmetics collaboration with True Blood is basically my perfect storm - a brand I already like creating makeup with colors and packaging that could in theory make me as preternaturally alluring as a Bon Temps vamp. Before it even came out, my inner panicked fangirl was worried about where I'd be able to get more once it was gone. "Should I start hoarding it as soon as it drops," I wondered, "or wait until it's been out a few months so I can get maximum shelf life?"

It was as unhealthy as it sounds. Fortunately, the collection came, I got my mitts on it, and now I've been restored to a level of sanity that allows me to give a fair review of the products. So to see whether the True Blood line lived up to my (extremely high) expectations, or whether I was left as pouty as King Bill, just keep reading.

True Blood Gets Its Own Makeup Collection

Tarte's Amazonian Kit Is Pleasantly Pretty

Every once in a while a makeup palette with a completely flattering (and coordinating) color scheme comes along that knocks my socks off. Most recently, this phenomenon occurred with Tarte's Amazonian Clay Passport to the Amazon ($48) set, which is available exclusively on QVC. The kit, inspired by Tarte creator Maureen Kelly's trip to the Amazon rainforest, includes flattering tones that look lovely on most complexions. When worn as a whole, the kit brightens, warms, and has been my go-to for every day wear. And I love that each individual full-size product can be used on its own (as opposed to palettes with products encased in a single container).

Tarte EmphasEYES Stays the Course

I test a lot of waterproof eyeliner, and while some of it's nothing to write home about, the majority do a relatively good job. However, not all of the products I test are as gentle as Tarte EmphasEYES Waterproof Clay Shadow/Liner ($22). This stuff is so non-irritating that I couldn't even feel it on. I'm fairly certain that even though I wear contacts and have sensitive eyes, I could poke myself in the cornea with some of it and not notice. It's also a lot less weird-ingredient heavy than a lot of liners out there, although not entirely natural. It wears just as well, in my opinion, as my beloved Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencils ($17) and Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes ($17), and I like the cream formula because it allows you a lighter, more subtle application. My only qualm is with the price-it's a little up there, and comparable products from other brands are about five dollars less. However, if you're looking for something waterproof and you've got sensitive eyes, I'd say it's a good option.

Tarte Cosmetics is turning 10 this year, and to celebrate the anniversary, it's releasing a bunch of limited-edition treats. We got our hands on a big eye shadow palette, the Ten Limited Edition Collector's Palette ($44), and it's a pretty good deal for what you get. All 10 shades are very wearable, especially on women with warm undertones; they're not as high on pigment payoff as a comparable Illamasqua or Urban Decay shadow, though. Their staying power, however, is excellent - even without primer - and the minimal creasing makes them great for daytime wear. I also absolutely love the longer-wearing eyeliner that comes with the palette. It stayed put nicely even though I used it to waterline. There's also a mini mascara, which would be nice in a clutch or for sleepovers. Overall: a good deal, cute, and nice for daytime.
