Could the End of Scent Be Near?
Feb 14 2008 - 4:07pm Are women wearing less perfume than they used to? That's the question pondered in an article in today's New York Times. There are nearly twice as many fragrances on the market today than there were six years ago, yet overall sales have dropped by $6 million in the past year alone.

I think perfumes are getting ridiculous...who wants to pay $50 for a tiny bottle? No wonder people are buying less and less.

My boyfriend likes the smell of my soap and lotion, so I'm set.

Most perfumes and colognes give me a rampaging headache anyway.

I don't wear much perfume, I actually have to remind myself to do it right now I'm trying to make it a habit. Usually its because my sister in law lives with me and she has a very sensitive nose, and while she was pregnant she absolutely hated everything I'd wear so I just sort of stopped. Besides I hate walking out of the house and taking a huge wave of perfume wherever I go, it makes me sick.

He doesn't like powdery smells (if he can smell what I'm wearing at all), so I stay away from wearing those. I still buy the perfume if I like it. My guy surprised me by going ga-ga over Tom Ford's Black Orchid, which I thought he'd hate. I try not to let him buy it unless I get to try it.

I still wear perfume almost every day, but I tend to gravitate toward warm, vanilla-y scented fragrances, like Pink Sugar...I don't think they bother people with allergies nearly as much as those strong floral ones.

KitKatherine, I am also obsessed with Daisy by Marc Jacobs. My hubby likes it too. It smells gorgeous.

Funny thing....My hubby went to and picked out Daisy by Marc Jacobs for my Valentine's Day gift and I didn't even give him any hints. Lucky girl huh!! It smells so delicious.

I love perfume and I think that numbers are low because the perfume bottles are huge and it does take a lot to go through it all...they teach us to wear just a little anyway, so of course it'll take a long time to make our way through an entire bottle.

Also, I do think that some of the numbers are off because of body sprays and other scents that aren't technically perfume. It's cheaper to buy a scent package from Victoria's Secret or from the Body Shop....

In terms of a "healthier revolution" going away from chemicals, perhaps people are moving more towards essential oils and flower waters or going natural from something more organic.

i wear strange perfumes (like demeter's laundromat, tomato, or fireplace scent) or solid perfumes (i'm obessed with crazylibellule's ananas imperial). only once has my boyfriend ever said he hated a scent -- it was fresh's cucumber baie (which i still LOVE).

i definitely don't wear scents everyday, but i disagree with the nyt article that the future holds the "demise" of perfume. wearing perfume will always be a fun thing to do!

I love wearing perfume...I have different perfumes for various moods and the scent of my favourites actually gives me a confidence boost.

HOWEVER.....Some ladies (and even men!!!!!!) need to be more considerate of other individuals. The overpowering of some perfume and cologne can be very painful to tolerate. For instance, especially being stuck on a long bus ride...sometimes when the scent is so overpowering, my eyes will start to water, my throat will swell and I cannot stop sneezing! Perfume/cologne in moderation can brighten one's mood and can be very sensual...but that is only in moderation haha.

I try to wear a different scent every day. For Valentines my boyfriend got me Bath and Body Works Japanese Cherry Blosom lotion, not a perfume, but still a scent I could absolutely just have sex with it's so amazing!

A lot of scents are too strong for me and make me sneeze. I used to wear a lot of different scents including several Chanels, but my chemistry changed. I like smelling just clean and barely scented from soap and/or whatever I've put in my bath or like vanilla. I wore vanilla when we first started dating and smelling vanilla anything reminds him of me. Lucky for me because vanilla doesn't make me sneeze! I do have one scent I wear for going out that smells fresh and sexy and doesn't make me ACHOO!!!

legalbeagle- guys do love lovespell don't they! i have that too and that is what i splash on in the summer sometimes just for casual- like on the weekends or something.

Well, my opinion is that the prices of fragrances are SOOO HIGH! My Jason wears a lot of designer clothes, I love his Versace shirts and jeans. He was the one to get me into liking Versace. I have 2 of their fragrances and absolutely love them. Some advice to everyone, I started collecting a lot of fragrances lately and the tip is this......most usually come in 1.7oz or 3.4oz. Well, if you check anywhere, department stores or Sephora, as expensive as fragrances are, if you know what it smells like on you and you really like it.......always buy the large size!!!! If you compare the 2 sizes, it is WAYYYY cheaper to pay more and get the larger size. Hee, hee, you all might prolly already know that, just a tip Smiling

"Some public venues, offices, and events have banned perfume outright out of consideration for others."

I've never heard of this before! How do they enforce something like that? What if it's your hair products or lotion that is scented? Or your laundry detergent? Seems odd to me...just wear the stuff in moderation.

I'm a Chanel Mademoiselle gal. I test a couple of fragrances every now and then looking for one I can rotate with the Chanel, but I end up just sticking with my standby. I'm so glad my fiance likes fragrance...his cologne smells soooo good.

I am a perfume ADDICT! Which is not to say you can smell me from 10 ft away - you can wear perfume without it 'wearing' you! I can't imagine a day without at least some perfume, it would be like walking around without a bra on, I would feel undressed.
As long as my husband isn't in the room while I spray he loves it, he just can't take the inital blast! People are very huggy where I live and after someone gives me a hug they always tell me how good I smell (and sometimes pull me back in for a bigger sniff, which is too funny!). I could talk perfume all day, so I'm gonna zip it now! Laughing out loud

I am a fragrance junkie, but I only keep a stash of my five or so favorites, and I typically ignore the bad, gimmicky fragrances that seem to be popping up on a daily basis. I agree that prices are ludicrous, and I would definitely buy and try more fragrances if I could buy a smaller size. The big bottles are only good, IMO, if you're buying your signature fragrance that you know you will use in entirety.

I love perfumes, but I try not to buy too many of them.

I didn't have electricity for weeks after Katrina hit and about a third of my perfumes spoiled. And since we are in an active hurricane period, I'm hesitant to invest a ton of money in something that might go bad.

Plus I have plenty of fragrances to wear as it is. LOL

I just think that people don't have the disposable income to spend on frivolous stuff like they used to. Yes the celebrity fragrances are a little out of control, but at the end of the day if it stinks nobody will buy it.

hey bella, i actually worked in a perfume store for a year (last year in fact) and i can tell you that people are buying more perfume than ever but the thing is that the cost of perfume has dropped significantly. so even though people are buying more companies aren't making as much money simply because of the selling price.

celebrity fragrances in particular (most manufactured by elizabeth arden e.g. with love by hilary duff or the lancaster group e.g. j.lo's and sarah jessica parker's fragrances etc.) use synthetic ingredients as opposed to oils, which all the top fragrance houses such as chanel and annick goutal insist upon garnering the higher price tags. the synthetic ingredients are cheaper so naturally the fragrances are cheaper and also the synthetic ingredients aren't of the same standard as the oils i.e. they don't last as long, they smell better on dry skin than oily skin because natural oils and synthetics don't mix well and synthetic perfumes don't really develop like oil perfumes with their top, heart and base notes. synthetic fragrances smell the same at the beginning and end, they just fade away as opposed to "telling a story" Smiling

i just thought should be taken into consideration before we write off the perfume industry for good xx
