Coming Soon: Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Malt

Not sure I'd want Mr. Bella to show up at home, or the office, smelling like whiskey. But something about a boozy-based fragrance piques my curiosity. Thierry Mugler - the mind behind the honey-vanilla-chocolate gourmand scent Angel - will release A*Men Pure Malt, a limited-edition man's fragrance based on pure malt whiskey extract. Hic.

Much like liquor's aging process, the cologne is aged in oak casks to reveal a peaty, lingering scent when done. Finishing up the sophisticated bouquet are hints of cedarwood, patchouli, and coffee. Coupled with the sweet confection that is his trademark female fragrance, the two of you could smell like dessert and an after-dinner drink. I'd bet this scent will be more complex than a whiff of any old Jim or Jack, but we'll have to wait a few months to find out. (It will be available at Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales for $70.) Will you sniff it out?

Angel the Fragrance Has a (Perfume) Posse

Even if you don't think you know Thierry Mugler's famous fragrance, Angel, you would probably recognize it. Launched in 1992, the scent is a perennial best-seller in both France and the United States. It's a honey-vanilla-chocolate confection - after all, it did launch the gourmand genre - and it's definitely a classic.

But every classic needs an update now and then, and Angel's no exception. Naomi Watts, who's fabulous at forty, appears in a new ad campaign to promote a line of new Angel body products. "Bella, you crazy," you might be thinking. "Angel already has body lotions and what-not." Touché. But the new ones have been tweaked, and in a sense, completely redone to make the perfume longer lasting. Having sniffed how well the Perfuming Body Cream ($80) held up through multiple hand washings, I can tell you that the scents do last a long time without fading or mutating. Is it too punny to say that this is heaven for Angel fans?

Beauty Byte: Naomi Watts Is the Face of Thierry Mugler Angel

This October, Thierry Mugler is releasing a new version of his 1992 perfume, Angel; the new scent is called Angel Les Parfums Corps. According to WWD, the nine items (exfoliating cream, hair mist, deodorant) will be as strongly scented as the perfume thanks to a new technology called the IDS-Intense Diffusion System technique. Sounds fancy.

British actress Naomi Watts, who wore the designer's gown to The Met's Costume Institute Gala, has signed on as the face of the new fragrance as well as the Thierry Mugler cosmetics line I told you about back in May. Truthfully, I'm surprised Naomi hasn't had a large contract like this before - but it's certainly a good way to ring in her 40th birthday next month.

Fragrance Review: Thierry Mugler Innocent Illusion

Thierry Mugler is not afraid of ruffling a few feathers in the fragrance world. His signature scent, Angel, incites either an intense love or immense disdain over its powerful, sugary muskiness. So I was interested to see if his latest creation, Innocent Illusion ($50), would smell equally controversial.

Innocent Illusion is a much gentler yet no less complex fragrance. It is a bit of a chameleon, with notes of red currant, lime blossom, mandarin, and sweet almond for a sweet-spiciness, as well as bergamot and white musk for depth and woodsiness. After a while, the scent settles into the skin with a surprising freshness. It's got a little bit of everything, which keeps it from being as overpowering as its predecessor, but it also fails to have as strong of a personality. That being said, this is indeed a truly enjoyable, multidimensional fragrance.

Those of you who may have written off Thierry Mugler because of Angel should consider trying Innocent Illusion. This fragrance is significantly easier to wear, yet unusual enough to not be boring. My only gripe? This spacey pink bottle might be a contender for one of the worst perfume bottles ever. Oh well, nothing's perfect.

New Product Alert: Thierry Mugler Beauty

French fashion designer Thierry Mugler hasn't shown a clothing collection since 2000, but the beauty arm of his business is doing very well. After releasing hit fragrances Angel and Alien, he's now launching a collection of luxury cosmetics. I haven't seen it yet in person, but the concept is intriguing.

The line is called The Art of the Metamorphosis, which I find a bit overly dramatic. (Then again, I thought of Kafka when I discovered the name, so who's overly dramatic now?) The product line itself has the usual suspects (foundation, lipstick) but adds a few unexpected items as well. For instance, Cils Vinyle ($49) is a vinyl-look gloss - not a mascara - that is meant to be painted on each lash at a time. Flash Lips ($39) is a lip primer that prepares lips for color application.

The design, of course, is pure Mugler: hard-edged, sleek, and otherworldly. (The website is filled with stars and moons and planets.) For all of its intergalactic branding, the concept feels weirdly retro to me; it seems like an '80s interpretation of what 2008 would feel like, all cold android chic. Are you feeling it or not?

Would You Buy Perfume Here?

Pop and I were in New York not too long ago, and around the corner from our hotel, a man was selling perfumes from a table. There was Vera Wang Princess, Thierry Mugler Angel, Flower by Kenzo, Calvin Klein Euphoria, on and on and on. The prices were low, but somehow I don't trust the product. Would you have picked up a bargain, or taken a pass?

How Do Other People Affect Your Scent Choices?

This morning on the bus I sat next to someone who just... smelled. She was wearing a heavy perfume, and I found myself breathing through my mouth just to get through the commute. But I also realized that I often spritz myself with the spicy and very distinct Angel by Thierry Mugler, so maybe I'm guilty of the same transit crime.

With news of the recent decline in fragrance purchases, do you think you would curb your scent-wearing habits out of consideration of others, or do you think your personal perfume choice is nobody else's business?
