Maybe it's because they're in France, or maybe it's just the moment, but yesterday at the opening of Paris Fashion Week lots of stars were wearing chic, retro updos that recalled the prettiest parts of the late '50s and early '60s. Anne Hathaway and Paz Vega both wore sleek styles that recalled Audrey Hepburn, while Kylie Minogue went for straight Jeanne Moreau. Black shades, of course, were de rigueur.

Kate Walsh arrived at Legion's Sundance Film Festival premiere looking enviably glam-casual, with understated makeup and a sweet, messy bun that looked easy and red carpet appropriate at the same time. I think this look would be absolutely perfect for Valentine's Day or a date night—some time you want to look sophisticated but romantic.
To begin, spray wet hair with a lightweight styling spray, like David Babaii Mise En Plise Light Styling Spray ($12.95).

I have no idea what this Japanese commercial for Seiyu stores is saying, but the hair is awesome. It reminds me of Marie Antoinette's enormous sculptural hairstyles, which took the French court by storm and had to have wire underpinnings and horse hair padding. Apparently, though, this commercial is poking fun at himegyaru style, a subculture of girls who wear huge bouffants and dress like princesses.

When you're lucky enough to have a flawless complexion like Natalie Portman, you could wear a spiked mullet and still look amazing. You could even go bald. (Oh wait, Natalie's already done that.) What I like most about this look, which she wore at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, is that it's not too polished or refined, and it's slightly tousled without being sloppy.

Faking a shorter haircut by means of skillfully placed hair pins is nothing new. In fact, we saw Rosario Dawson do her own faux-crop late last year, followed by Nicole Kidman's asymmetric version. In recent times, the look has taken on resurgence in popularity, as celebrities have been tricking us out with their own adaptations, giving the appearance of freshly cut locks.

Last night, pretend New York socialite Leighton Meetster and fellow Gossip Girl star, Jessica Szohr joined real life New York socialite Olivia Polermo at the 60th anniversary soirée for Longchamp. I can imagine just how sweltering the big apple can be in the Summertime, but these lovely ladies have managed to mask any evidence of debilitating heat and humidity.
They arrived to the Upper East Side wearing minimal makeup and casual updos with their long, layered bangs lying just below their jawline to frame their face.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Prince Joachim wed Miss Marie Cavallier in a white wedding in Copenhagen, Denmark. The princess bride wore her hair off of her face and neck in a delicate updo. Her curled and pinned hair extensions were secured in the back, and the look was topped off with an elaborate tiara.

There are occasions like the Academy Awards where stars go all out and dress to the nines and last night's Opera Ball in Vienna, Austria was one of them. Every woman in the house was wearing a gala style gown, decadent jewels and had over-done hair. Here's a sampling of some of the looks on Dita Von Teese and Bettina Kofler (girlfriend of Austrian construction magnate Richard Lugner) whose hair kind of reminds me of this 1960's photo.
