Trend Alert: Faking a Shorter Style

Faking a shorter haircut by means of skillfully placed hair pins is nothing new. In fact, we saw Rosario Dawson do her own faux-crop late last year, followed by Nicole Kidman's asymmetric version. In recent times, the look has taken on resurgence in popularity, as celebrities have been tricking us out with their own adaptations, giving the appearance of freshly cut locks. Kate Beckinsale's full-in-the-front updo gave the illusion of an angled wedge at the Whiteout premiere; both Jennifer Lopez and Elizabeth Banks opted for wavy, tousled styles; and Kristen Stewart faked us out at the VMAs with her memorable faux bowl cut. Day-to-Night Hairstyle in a Flash

Celebrity stylist Charles Baker Strahan has been sharing his tips for making our hair look its best during warmer-weather months, from avoiding naughty locks to his suggestion for a fresh Spring haircut to making your ponytail less boring. Now he's offering up his tips on creating a simple office-to-party hairstyle in a flash. He said:

One style that I think is very versatile is loose, tousled waves. You can start with your hair down, and the soft tousles can be pulled up into a messy bun with braided moments throughout to add a different texture. Because the waves are already there, it will look more dressed up than just an average bun.

Trend Alert: Free-Falling Bangs at The Longchamp Bash

Last night, pretend New York socialite Leighton Meetster and fellow Gossip Girl star, Jessica Szohr joined real life New York socialite Olivia Polermo at the 60th anniversary soirée for Longchamp. I can imagine just how sweltering the big apple can be in the Summertime, but these lovely ladies have managed to mask any evidence of debilitating heat and humidity.

They arrived to the Upper East Side wearing minimal makeup and casual updos with their long, layered bangs lying just below their jawline to frame their face. I always feel that when I allow loose pieces of hair to fall by the wayside that I look unkempt, however, I think we can all agree that these girls look nothing short of chic.

How to Have Hair Like a Princess Bride

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Prince Joachim wed Miss Marie Cavallier in a white wedding in Copenhagen, Denmark. The princess bride wore her hair off of her face and neck in a delicate updo. Her curled and pinned hair extensions were secured in the back, and the look was topped off with an elaborate tiara.

While the bride looks relaxed and radiant, this hairdo is actually quite complicated to pull off all by yourself. If you are interested in creating this style on your wedding day, you may want to ask for some assistance from a trusted pal or bridesmaid.

Step 1: Begin with hair that has been washed the night before so that it has just a little bit of oil in it. Mist hair lightly with water and apply a little bit of mousse or styling gel all over. Brush to distribute it evenly, then blow dry your hair back and away from your face until it's dry. Next, brush hair back and part it gently. Then, secure hair with an elastic into a ponytail.

Step 2: This is the part where you'll likely need assistance. Add a large extension piece just above your ponytail (I suggest one that is attached to a hair comb) and secure the comb with bobby pins. Have your helper section off the extensions into four pieces of equal thickness. You'll also need to separate your ponytail into one or two sections, depending on how long and thick your hair is.
Step 3: You'll want to create two loops out of each section of hair. Grab one of the sections and create a loop only going about midway down the hair shaft. Pin hair and make a loop with the remaining half, and pin that one too. Repeat with each section until complete.
Step 4: Make sure that no pins are visible. If they are, adjust them accordingly. Spray a generous amount of firm-hold hairspray all over your hair. Lastly, gently place your tiara on your head and secure with bobby pins if necessary.

Love It or Hate It? Helena Bonham Carter's Deconstructed Updo

Here's Helena Bonham Carter at the London premiere of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She's sporting a deconstructed updo, with ribbons intermixed with her wild curls. I don't think everyone could pull off this unconventional look, but I think it fits Helena's quirky personality well (and it makes me think of Hamlet's Ophelia). What's your opinion?

How To: Claire Danes's Polished Pulled-Back 'Do

Claire Danes totally nailed her look at the premiere of Evening in NYC on Tuesday night. Her lips are bright, her skin is glowing, and her hair looks simple but full of volume.

This pulled-back, partly down style with a touch of bouffant at the crown is very popular - Carmen Electra chose a similar look for her wedding hair - and it's also very easy. So for this week's How To, I've created simple step-by-step instructions on how to recreate Claire's look at home, complete with product recommendations you can scroll through below. (Want to create your own celebrity beauty look? Try this week's TeamSugar challenge.)

Step 1: Wash hair with an advanced shampoo for fine hair, like Jonathan Product Shampoo Serious Volume Volumizing Shampoo.
Step 2: Apply a volumizing mousse to the hair, especially concentrating on the roots. Then, section hair by pinning or clipping the top layers up so you can blow-dry the underneath sections first.

Step 3: Working in sections - around eight sections is usually plenty - dry hair away from your face using a large round brush to create the curves at the tips like Claire's. When you are finished drying, wrap each section of hair around the brush several times. Hold the brush and give each section a shot of cold air to set.
Step 4: If you are looking for added waves, use a one-and-a-half-inch or larger barreled curling iron to add some curls and volume.
Step 5: Grab a section of hair at the front crown and back-tease the underside to give it some volume. Next, hold that same section of hair, smooth out the topside with a brush, and pin the section using two to three bobby pins. Position the pins away from your ears at a 45-degree angle, and allow them to overlap for more hold.
Step 6: Lastly, mist your entire head with a medium to firm hold hairspray. Make sure that you do an extra once-over at the crown, since you won't want any fly-aways to spoil your look.

Alicia Keys never fails to look gorgeous on the red carpet, but she's also not afraid of strong choices, either. Tonight, she went decidedly retro (peep those earrings!) with blue eye shadow and a complex, old-fashioned updo that looked like it could very well have been worn by Lena Horne or one of the Andrews sisters. What do you think? Was this a pretty blast from the past or a look that stayed in the '40s for a reason?
