Doing Drugstore: Vaseline Cocoa Butter Smoothing Body Butter

Vaseline is about to come out with two additions to its Cocoa Butter line of lotions, and one of them is now on my repeat-buy list. I was able to sample its Cocoa Butter Smoothing Body Butter ($6.99), which will be available in stores any day now. It features a blend of cocoa and shea butters, which gives off a light and pleasant fragrance. For some reason, the scent reminds me of tropical beaches-which isn't a bad thing at all!

Like other body butters, it has a smooth texture and melts from the heat of your body. Unlike some other ones, though, this one doesn't feel greasy. I liked how easily it absorbed into my skin, and more importantly, how little of it is needed to get the job done. I definitely recommend using less product than you think you might need. You really don't need more than about a fingertip's worth to cover an entire leg, which means one eight-ounce container will last for a long time. If you have very dry, difficult-to-moisturize skin, try this out and let me know what you think. I have a feeling you're going to like it.

How To: Make Your Cosmetic Containers Sparkle

A lot of you are in love with the crystal-adorned Vaseline container from Monday's blush post, so I thought I'd tell you how you can make it at home. In fact, you could dress up almost any classic beauty buy this way, making even the most routine grooming products into objets d'art in your loo.

Swarovski makes crystals that you can individually glue onto the Vaseline container, but i think this approach takes too much time and money. Do you really want to spend hours messing with glue? Instead, the quick and easy way to get the rhinestone effect is to buy a set of peel-and-stick acrylic crystals. You will need about 300 small clear crystals and around 125 blue ones. Before you start application, be sure to clean the container so that you don't have any random petroleum jelly stains. From there, it's a simple (if tedious) process of peeling and sticking each crystal onto the jar. Start at the bottom and work your way up; this way, you can easily hold the container still. And that's it, really! It's easy, inexpensive and fabulous-an honor the humble Vaseline jar has probably never had bestowed upon it before.

Get The Most From Your Makeup: Broken Blush

Ever buy a new powder blush and almost immediately drop it on the ground... and watch it fall apart into a million little pieces in the container? If so, don't despair! Here's a fast fix to help you salvage part of your brand-new purchase.

Take a small jar (about the size of a lip gloss container) and mix whatever powder is salvageable with a little bit of good ol' Vaseline (petroleum jelly). This will turn your blush into a lip gloss or a high-shine cream shadow. I'm not saying that it will look exactly the same, but it's a great way to turn lemons into lemonade!

Love It or Hate It? SMG's Feisty NYC Makeup

PopSugar called it when she said that SMG looked feisty on Monday night at the Vaseline Skin Is Amazing event with her tightly pulled-back hair. Sarah Michelle has been getting a lot of props lately, especially when she stepped out in pretty plaits at the The Air I Breathe premiere. (I have a how-to coming up for you, straight from her stylist, so hold tight for that.)

This time around, I'm not so sure about Sarah's makeup. This dramatic eye paired with a chalky pale pink pout might be pretty for fashion runways, but I think it distracts from her natural beauty. Do you think this smouldering look works for SMG, or is it one of her rare missteps?

Reader Review of the Day: Yes to Carrots Lip Butter in Carrot

Yes to Carrots makes a whole range of purportedly eco-friendly beauty products at drugstore prices, which in my estimation is a good thing. But sometimes cheap and green do not the perfect product for you make, as reader Oni1 found out when she tried the Yes to Carrots Lip Butter ($3.69). She says:

At first try, I thought this was the best balm ever, but now I've been using it off and on for several months and have concluded it's just OK. I like that it applies smoothly, the smell/flavor isn't offensive, and I like the packaging, but I've gotten similar results from Vaseline. For the price I think it should come with SPF.

A Few Beauty Tidbits From Gwen at Spring Fashion Week

It's 2010 Spring Fashion Week, and one of the first designers to show her collection was L.A.M.B.'s Gwen Stefani. For her show, the models wore MAC makeup on their faces, Vaseline's soon-to-be-released Sheer Infusion Body Lotion ($6.25 to $9) on their skin, and a trendy, opaque white shade of nail polish from Dashing Diva called NYC Fleet Week ($8). Lucky for us, Pop caught up with Gwen in NYC and asked her about her popular Harajuku Lovers line, for which Snow Bunnies ($30) just launched.

"Sunshine Cuties is coming out in the Spring," Gwen dished. And by the sound of it, there's something else up Gwen's perfume sleeve. "There's always something in the works. I do really enjoy doing the fragrances," she added. I guess we'll have to wait and see what she's got cooking in the scent department. In the meantime, I'm off to get my white nail polish trend on. What Beauty Advice Has Your Mother Given You?

My mom is one of those ladies that everyone loves. She has a knack for letting things roll off her shoulders, and she never seems to have a bad day. Plus, when I was growing up she used to let me eat Cookie Crisp for breakfast. How cool is that?

But, beneath the sunshiny interior and weakness for a kid that just wanted her sugar fix, there's a wildly hilarious woman with a quick, sly wit. In honor of Mother's Day, I asked my mom to share with me her beauty advice. Tell me what advice your mom gave you, and find out what my bella mama had to say when you read more.

Moisturize: While my mom does it up old-school with a nightly application of Vaseline to remove makeup around her eyes and soften fine lines, I love her reasoning behind why she puts it on her lips, too. "It makes my lips kissable," she quipped. TMI on the love life, ma.
Treat yourself: "I'm all about big shiny hair. Instead of doing my color at home myself (it was always way too brassy), now I splurge and get it done at the salon," she said.
Drink your water: Mom knows best.
Smile: "Maybe the best beauty tip is to smile. It seems to draw people to me, and they smile back."

Model of the Week: Marisa Miller

As the new face of Victoria's Secret Very Sexy Dare fragrance, Marisa Miller is on the road to being a one-namer (think Heidi, Cindy, Naomi). I caught up with her recently in New York and got her to spill some beauty secrets. Most surprising, however, was that the California native has eschewed suntanning over the last few years and believes it has saved her skin. "I was just talking to Linda Hay, the head makeup artist for Victoria's Secret, and she said my skin looks better now than when I started five years ago. It's because I‘ve stayed out of the sun the last two years."

So how do you stay tan?
Marisa Miller:
It’s not hard to find good self tanner that’s not orange anymore. There are so many products in the Bare Bronze line - shimmer makes a big difference on the skin for hiding imperfections. It’s all about the way the light hits your skin. This sheen in the Shimmering Body Oil reflects the light differently. [All the Victoria's Secret Angels] were like "more, more, more!" When you’re on that runway it’s all you, there’s no retouching. It’s live. That was definitely the big secret of the [Victoria's Secret Fashion] show.

That’s Victoria’s Secret! What are your other beauty secrets?
Marisa Miller: Linda just used this product from Australia -she’s Australian- called Lucas’ Papaw Ointment. It has papaya extract, which is great for cracked skin and insect bites. She puts it on my lips or anywhere that’s dry, like under your eyes, or even to get a little sheen. It’s a Vaseline-type texture.

How do you take care of yourself with all the traveling you do?
Marisa Miller: I probably travel three weeks out of every month. You try to sleep whenever you can. When I first started it was hard to sleep on a plane, but now I can sleep anytime anywhere. Whenever I can, I’ll leave a little conditioner on my ends or just have a really good moisturizer and eye cream on the plane. Drink a lot of water.

How do you keep your skin in shape?
Marisa Miller: Good skin is really important, so I make sure I go to the dermatologist. My doctor, Dr. [Harold A.] Lancer, has some really great products in his line. I make sure he checks out my freckles, it’s important to be on top of that with my skin. Staying out of the sun has made a world of difference. Not that you have to hide from the sun by any means, but it’s important to use sunscreen and do it in moderation. I get facials in L.A. I’ve been going to Rita Csizmadia for probably ten years. Basically it’s maintenance, like clogged pores and things like that from all the makeup. I try to squeeze in my appointments every month.

What are your makeup essentials?
Marisa Miller: Curling your lashes instantly makes you look more awake, so if I only have a couple of minutes that's what I do, followed by mascara. Mascara and bronzer, that’s the biggest thing. My favorite bronzer is Victoria's Secret Mosaic Bronzer in Goddess. It’s easy because you can use it on all skin types. And I love High Definition Mascara, I have it on right now. It’s lengthening and not clumpy and you get good volume. I’m definitely a low-maintenance beauty person.

Well, at least in your line of work you get people to do the maintaining for you!
Marisa Miller: I know! That's the best part - you get a mini makeover every time you work!
