Beauty Marked! Versatile Violet Eye Shadows

Happy Tuesday, everyone! It was such fun to see all of the violet, purple and lavender eye shadows you found. I know that the colors can often seem garish in their pots, but if you apply with the right makeup brush, they'll look beautiful on the eyes. Whether you choose a burst of bright color or a subtle smoky eye, violet is a great color for easing into fall.

Let's move on to your picks, shall we? There were tons of great ones, but I liked

Beauty Mark It! Versatile Violet Eye Shadows

Hear the phrase "purple eye shadow" and people either clap with glee or hide in fear. While the color isn't for, uh, shrinking violets, it isn't the brash '80s nightmare you might be afraid of. A light, dusky lavender can be used for a soft smoky eye-or you can go bolder with a deep purple. I like this Tarte eye shadow in The It Girl ($17) because it's soft and easy to blend.

You Can Look Pretty in Purple Shadow, Too

Emma Stone sure knows how to glam it up, doesn't she? At last night's GQ Men of the Year event in LA, the actress wowed in this subtle lavender shadow. Encircling the eyes with makeup can look raccoon-like, but Emma manages to pull it off, thanks to a light touch and a soft-toned shade. The great thing about this cooler-toned shade is that it looks great during all seasons, and it just happens to be very of-the-moment. You can look pretty in purple shadow, too. With All Hallows' coming on apace, I got to thinking about fakey colored and crazy special effects contacts. I went through a phase where I had, alternately, violet, hazel, and dark blue eyes, and while it was fun, the people around me didn't seem to think it was as awesome as I did. I've even worn special effects contacts (they were cat's eyes for Halloween) and I thought they were pretty fun. But what about you? Have you ever used something like this for an extended period of time, or even just for a costume?

Drew Ditches the Black Tips

Most of you weren't loving Drew Barrymore's black tips when she debuted them earlier this month, but you have to hand it to the girl. She's definitely someone who can pull off the most extreme of styles. "This is the craziest look I've ever given her!" colorist Tracey Cunningham told InStyle. "I used clear foils and a stencil that I made out of paper to get everything to line up," she added. But, those distinctive black tips didn't last that long. At a press event yesterday for her new film, Whip It, the actress flaunted a shorter, all-blond cropped bob instead. This got me to thinking about my own fickle hair-color choices. I've had blond-streaked bangs one day, only to tint them intense red-violet the next. What about you? Do you tend to stick to one color, or are you more apt to switch it up?

Get the Look: Pleasing Purples at Vena Cava

Yesterday's Vena Cava show featured neutral-toned clothing, with pops of bold orange thrown in for good measure. But, it was the purple lips that had me mesmerized, and so far, it's been one of my favorite looks at 2010 Spring Fashion Week. The tone remains edgy, but completely wearable, particularly when paired with MAC Coquette Eye Shadow ($14.50), a muted grayish-taupe shade that makeup artist LLoyd Simmonds used to create this look. "The collection is inspired by the graphic wall murals of the Ndebele tribe in South Africa, with a Maude Labowski take on styling, so we created a bold, graphic lip in violet," he said. To mimic the flattering shade, Simmonds blended Pro Lipmix in white, burgundy, red, and blue to create a matte, opaque, violet lip. But, you could get a similar, simplified look by blotting MAC Lipstick in Rebel ($14).

Bella Donna: Elizabeth Taylor

Although Liz Taylor first first appeared on screen at the age of nine, she shot to superstar status at the age of 12 in 1944's National Velvet. Since then, this beauty with violet eyes has been in the spotlight - through good times and bad.

A longtime AIDS activist, Taylor filmed the bulk of her most successful movies in the 1950s and 1960s. A winner of two Oscars, the oft-married Taylor was the first actress to be paid one million dollars for a film (1963's Cleopatra).

While Taylor has suffered bouts of poor health throughout her life, she always seems to defy the odds. "Success is a great deodorant." she said. "It takes away all your past smells." Speaking of smells - Taylor's famous line of perfumes are marketed under the Elizabeth Arden brand and include Passion, White Diamonds, and Gardenia, among others.

A classic beauty, Taylor's 1950's makeup gave her that va-va-voom appeal. To recreate her sultry style, check out my tips, along with pictures of the lovely dame, when you read more.

Velvety skin - For a smooth, matte finish try Max Factor Pan-Stik ($6.69).
Alluring eyes - Opt for a natural shadow, black liner, and several layers of mascara. Try the dark end of Almay Bright Eyes Liner/Highlighter Duo Pencil in Soft Black & Champagne ($8.49) to line your eyes, and the light end to brighten your lids.
Defined brows - With feather-like strokes, use a brow pencil to create sharp, angular arches. Try Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil in Soft Black ($6.49).
Heart-shaped lips - Create a full, crimson lip using Clinique's High Impact Lip Colour in Red-y to Wear ($14), a beautiful shade of classic red.
